Book excerpt: Australia’s master of undead horror returns with a grunge-soaked tale of love and vampirism in ’90s Seattle. Charlie died in Nevada, 1973, after seeing Led Zeppelin live on stage and making the wrong choice on the long drive home. Corey meets him at a TAD gig seventeen years later and feels an immediate attraction. They both swear their night together will be a onetime thing, but neither can stay away. Corey and Charlie spend two decades building a life together, a mortal and vampire in love, but there are some things Corey’s not willing to give up. She can move cities when Charlie’s eternal youth raises suspicion and she can rebuild her career as a music journalist after every disruption to their life, but as she gets older, it’s harder and harder to be satisfied with their nocturnal existence. Then a moment of weakness delivers Charlie and Corey the one thing they never expected to have…and their relationship gets more complicated than either of them ever dreamed. "A punk-noir Only Lovers Left Alive. Edgy, bloody and surprising. Cruel Nights shows Nahrung's just getting better and better." Angela "A.G." Slatter, award-winning author of The Briar Book of the Dead. "No-one writes vampires like Nahrung. A bloody perfect cocktail of grunge, love and angry hearts: this book sings." Trent Jamieson, author of Day Boy and The Stone Road. "Compelling, dark and bittersweet. I've never read, or loved, a vampire story quite like Cruel Nights. Nahrung takes familiar horror tropes and creates something completely new, injecting them with grunge, love and intrigue. It's extraordinary." Steven Paulsen, author of Shadows on the Wall and Dream Weaver.

Book excerpt: God in these Southern Nights is only another possibly deranged near relative, cast in the only nonspeaking part in this human drama. Everyone else talks and talks. And it's the dialogue in these novels that makes them three of Gifford' best, reminders of the author's seemingly unlimited range and versatility, a comic-tragic genius for our time. Night People, Arise & Walk, and Baby Cat-Face stand out for their sheer velocity; for the copious, raw violence; for the invented religions and gods that make people do things; and for all the other horrors that somehow cohabit—affably—with the genuine pathos and loveliness of the many unforgettable characters and the things these characters say so winningly that we've never heard anyone say before.

Book The Cruel Stars of the Night

Download or read book The Cruel Stars of the Night written by Kjell Eriksson and published by Minotaur Books. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When The Princess of Burundi was published by Thomas Dunne Books, American critics hailed Kjell Eriksson as Sweden's Ed McBain, and they compared him to Henning Mankell. Now The Cruel Stars of the Night, the next in this internationally acclaimed crime series, unveils a spellbinding new tale again featuring police inspector Ann Lindell. The Cruel Stars of the Night opens one snowy day when thirty-five-year-old Laura Hindersten goes to the police to report that her father, a local professor, is missing. Inspector Ann Lindell and her colleagues can find no motive for the man's disappearance. And when the corpses of two elderly men do turn up, neither of the dead men is the missing academic. Unexpectedly, the police get help from one of the professor's colleagues, who believes there is an astonishing link between the murders and the disappearance of Professor Hindersten. But as the pressure on Lindell increases dramatically, she is shocked to discover that the killer has many more diabolical schemes in store. Combining heart-pounding suspense with brilliant psychological insight, The Cruel Stars of the Night moves like a comet as it approaches the cliff-hanging climax. It is sure to win Kjell Eriksson a whole new galaxy of American fans.

  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2000-11

Download or read book The Canzoniere written by Francesco Petrarca and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francesco Petrarca (1304-74) has been described as the 'first modern man of letters' and his influence on the European lyric tradition has been widespread. The poems of his Canzoniere, closely associated as they are with the enigmatic figure of Laura, were soon to become the models for love-poetry in nearly all major European literatures in the Renaissance. The new translations here use the same rhyme schemes and broadly the same metres as those used by Petrarch himself. The facing English texts are thus not intended to be absolutely literal, but to reflect the inner meanings and moods of the originals, with some further literal translations of difficult passages added in the notes. The notes to the poems also cover their likely dates, mythological allusions, certain background settings, and a number of other calendrical and structural features which appear to emerge from the actual sequencing of the collection itself. There is also a section on old Italian syntax. and other linguistic aids. The new translation of Petrarch's Rerum Vulgarian Fragmenta is in two separate volumes.

Book Sisters of the Cross

  • Author : Alexei Remizov

Download or read book Sisters of the Cross written by Alexei Remizov and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English translation of a remarkable masterpiece of early modernist fiction from 1910 by an influential member of the Russian Symbolist movement. Thirty-year-old Piotr Alekseevich Marakulin lives a contented, if humdrum life as a financial clerk in a Petersburg trading company. He is jolted out of his daily routine when, quite unexpectedly, he is accused of embezzlement and loses his job. This change of status brings him into contact with a number of women—the titular “sisters of the cross”—whose sufferings will lead him to question the ultimate meaning of the universe. In the tradition of Gogol’s Petersburg Tales and Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, Sisters of the Cross deploys densely packed psychological prose and fluctuating narrative perspective to tell the story of a “poor clerk” who rebels against the suffering and humiliation afflicting both his own life and the lives of the remarkable women whom he encounters in the tenement building where he lives in Petersburg. The novel reaches its haunting climax at the beginning of the Whitsuntide festival, when Marakulin thinks he glimpses the coming of salvation both for himself and for the “fallen” actress Verochka, the unacknowledged love of his life, in one of the most powerfully drawn scenes in Symbolist literature. Remizov is best known as a writer of short stories and fairy tales, but this early novel, masterfully translated by Roger Keys and Brian Murphy, is perhaps his most significant work of sustained artistic prose. “Dark and beguiling; Remizov is a writer worth knowing about, and this slender volume makes a good start.” —Kirkus Reviews

And second, vampires must depart to the Dark Kingdom upon creating a new vampire. Victor Decimus, once a Roman officer in the days of Jesus of Nazareth, has broken both of these rules. He and his former thrall Paul now live together as lovers, running an exclusive nightclub in Washington, D.C., that caters to those seeking to fulfill their darkest fantasies. Their life together will be short-lived, however, if agents of the Dark Kingdom have their way—using methods that test both the power and love of the vampire transgressors.

Download or read book The Poetry of Petrarch written by Petrarch and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ineffable sweetness, bold, uncanny sweetness that came to my eyes from her lovely face; from that day on I'd willingly have closed them, never to gaze again at lesser beauties. --from Sonnet 116 Petrarch was born in Tuscany and grew up in the south of France. He lived his life in the service of the church, traveled widely, and during his lifetime was a revered, model man of letters. Petrarch's greatest gift to posterity was his Rime in vita e morta di Madonna Laura, the cycle of poems popularly known as his songbook. By turns full of wit, languor, and fawning, endlessly inventive, in a tightly composed yet ornate form they record their speaker's unrequited obsession with the woman named Laura. In the centuries after it was designed, the "Petrarchan sonnet," as it would be known, inspired the greatest love poets of the English language--from the times of Spenser and Shakespeare to our own. David Young's fresh, idiomatic version of Petrarch's poetry is the most readable and approachable that we have. In his skillful hands, Petrarch almost sounds like a poet out of our own tradition bringing the wheel of influence full circle.

Book excerpt: In Hunter Is the Night, author Kozi Nasi presents her second collection of poetry, continuing on her path of storytelling through verse. These poetic episodes tell stories of her life, written with a mature voice and refined style, painting a wide range of emotional and spiritual states. In these deeply personal poems, Kozi does not shy away from vivid descriptions of intimate moments, pushing limits, putting her foot down, pointing her finger, and taking a stand to uphold her true feelings and principles. She portrays with ease the attentive lover, the close friend, the adoring granddaughter, the loyal partner in crime, the voice of reason, the seductress, the mother, the muse, the voyeur, and the self-critic with a flair for lessons learned. Hunter is the Night shares a bouquet of poems, cut and delivered fresh from Kozi Nasis garden of life stories old and new. TESTED Hanging by a single red hair from a very heavy cloud, humored by the thought of collisions being rather rare in the spacious sky; dont want to let go just yet, dont want to fall down, dont want to crash, the anticipated raindrop on the mouth of your grave.
