Download or read book Crucible of Resistance written by Christos Laskos and published by Pluto Press (UK). This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crucible of Resistance seeks to challenge the mainstream account of the 'Greek Crisis' and situate it within a broader regional context and ultimately a critique of the world economic system. Euclid Tsakalotos and Christos Laskos argue that Greece's exceptionalism is largely a myth. They show how the causes of the 2008 global financial crisis lie in key features of the neo-liberal economic order, including income and wealth inequalities and the hollowing out of democratic and deliberative institutions. A progressive exit from the crisis, for Greece and the eurozone as a whole, entails meeting head on the limitations of the neo-liberal order. Crucible of Resistance argues that an effective response entails confronting not just the neo-liberal order, but also the earlier social-democratic Keynesian regime. This book widens out the debate about the crisis in Greece and the eurozone linking it to socialist and class strategies at the international level.
Download or read book Crucible of War written by Fred Anderson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engrossing narrative of the great military conflagration of the mid-eighteenth century, Fred Anderson transports us into the maelstrom of international rivalries. With the Seven Years' War, Great Britain decisively eliminated French power north of the Caribbean — and in the process destroyed an American diplomatic system in which Native Americans had long played a central, balancing role — permanently changing the political and cultural landscape of North America. Anderson skillfully reveals the clash of inherited perceptions the war created when it gave thousands of American colonists their first experience of real Englishmen and introduced them to the British cultural and class system. We see colonists who assumed that they were partners in the empire encountering British officers who regarded them as subordinates and who treated them accordingly. This laid the groundwork in shared experience for a common view of the world, of the empire, and of the men who had once been their masters. Thus, Anderson shows, the war taught George Washington and other provincials profound emotional lessons, as well as giving them practical instruction in how to be soldiers. Depicting the subsequent British efforts to reform the empire and American resistance — the riots of the Stamp Act crisis and the nearly simultaneous pan-Indian insurrection called Pontiac's Rebellion — as postwar developments rather than as an anticipation of the national independence that no one knew lay ahead (or even desired), Anderson re-creates the perspectives through which contemporaries saw events unfold while they tried to preserve imperial relationships. Interweaving stories of kings and imperial officers with those of Indians, traders, and the diverse colonial peoples, Anderson brings alive a chapter of our history that was shaped as much by individual choices and actions as by social, economic, and political forces.

Download or read book Silicon Carbide Ceramics written by Andrew J. Ruys and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-01-22 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been three decades since the last significant book was published on SiC ceramics (other than those books that specifically focus on SiC semiconductors). Thirty years has been a long time in the world of SiC ceramics. In the early 1990s, SiC was still a relatively obscure ceramic even within the materials community, prominent only as an industrial abrasive (carborundum), and a refractory (Chapter 7). This has all changed dramatically in the 21st century. For example, - As a semiconductor, SiC greatly surpasses silicon in performance, especially in high-power systems. Its market penetration since its launch in 2001 has been exponential. Single-crystal SiC semiconductors are covered in Chapter 3 - Millions of military and paramilitary personnel have globally been protected with lightweight SiC body armour, since the late 1990s. Body armour is covered in Chapters 4 and 5 - SiC–SiC is a composite material close to commercialization that makes possible high-temperature load-bearing applications hitherto only able to be hypothesized: from ultra-high-temperature jet turbine blades to advanced nuclear fuel encapsulation, the possibilities are very promising. Aerospace applications are covered in Chapter 9 - Other key areas that are addressed are blast-resistant SiC vehicle/vessel armour in Chapter 8 and wear-resistant SiC ceramics in Chapter 6 - Silicon Carbide Ceramics will be an essential reference resource for academic and industrial researchers and materials scientists and engineers working in ceramic materials for the semiconductor, defence, aerospace, wear resistance and refractory fields - Presents an extensive review of the history, production and properties of SiC ceramics, including their characterization and applications - Discusses classical and state-of-the-art sintering technologies for SiC ceramics - Focuses on the future of ceramic manufacturing and advanced ceramic additive technologies

Download or read book Aluminum Lithium Alloys written by Vijaya Singh and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information on the technology of melting and casting aluminium lithium alloys is rarely published. Therefore, this chapter presents important findings from many research investigations on various aspects of melting, casting and cast structure development of Al-Li alloys. Presence of reactive element such as Li in the molten alloy requires special melt protection techniques, containment materials, alloying practices and casting equipment. Problem of grain refinement, linked to the presence of Zr in most commercial compositions, has also been discussed. Finally, it is surmised that the lower Li contents present in the third generation alloys compared to their older counterparts is expected to ease difficulties in their melting and casting.
Download or read book Magmas Under Pressure written by Yoshio Kono and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-04-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magmas under Pressure: Advances in High-Pressure Experiments on Structure and Properties of Melts summarizes recent advances in experimental technologies for studying magmas at high pressures. In the past decade, new developments in high-pressure experiments, particularly with synchrotron X-ray techniques, have advanced the study of magmas under pressure. These new experiments have revealed significant changes of structure and physical properties of magmas under pressure, which significantly improves our understanding of the behavior of magmas in the earth's interior. This book is an important reference, not only in the earth and planetary sciences, but also in other scientific fields, such as physics, chemistry, material sciences, engineering and in industrial applications, such as glass formation and metallurgical processing. - Includes research and examples of high-pressure technologies for studying the structure and properties of magma - Summarizes the current knowledge on the structure and properties of high-pressure magma - Highlights the importance of magma in understanding the evolution of the earth's interior

Download or read book Current Trends in Boriding written by Michal Kulka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-30 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most important thermochemical and physical techniques of boriding. The formation and characterization of different boride layers or boride coatings are compared in this book. The author analyzes the technological aspects of boriding processes, presenting the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The effect of the boriding techniques on the microstructure of borided materials are also indicated. The mechanism of formation of active boron atoms or ions and the phenomena during re-melting of alloying material together with the substrate are described. Special attention is devoted to powder-pack boriding, electrochemical boriding in borax, gas boriding, plasma gas or paste boriding and laser or plasma surface alloying with boron, acknowledged as the most important current methods in boriding. The thermodynamics of gas boriding is also analyzed.
