Book Whistling Girls and Crowing Hens

Download or read book Whistling Girls and Crowing Hens written by Joy Ingram and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-06-19 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You may have heard that actions speak louder than words. This is very true, but for myself and for many others, the words and phrases that we grew up with as children have influenced our actions and therefore ring very loudly in our lives. I grew up on a rich diet of words and phrases that shaped and molded me into my adulthood and even until today. You see, I did not grow up influenced by the writings of Voltaire or the paintings of Rembrandt, but I grew up on the words and phrases of a little Southern black woman with a man's middle name""Mamie Floyd. This work is a compilation of stories and sayings from and about Miss Mamie. Many of these sayings were, in some cases, casually spoken. In other cases, they came as strong admonition as a result of or to prevent some undesirable action. Whatever the reasons, these sayings have become internalized as part of a rich family legacy, affecting my life in quiet, unspoken ways. For example, to this day, I cannot whistle. It is certainly not because I am not physically able to whistle, but like many other African American and Southern women I grew up with, I believed that this was not only unladylike but could possibly affect the way I would turn out as an adult. I rarely, if ever, talked back to my parents, especially my mother. If I did not find myself in the "middle of next week" or "wake up dead," I knew I at least wanted to live past that day. It is funny. I don't believe anyone really knows where the place called the "middle of next week" is, but few have dared to do what it took to venture there. I am also very thankful for my taste buds. As a matter of fact, long before I studied science in grade school and found out exactly what and where taste buds are, I knew they had to be very special because Mama frequently threatened to slap them out of my mouth. In an age of jargon and political correctness, they are a refreshing oasis from which to draw.

Book A Rooster Once Crowed

Download or read book A Rooster Once Crowed written by Bryant Cornett and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a one-room Sunday school class--the lesson that's been downloaded over 8,000 times in 54 countries--comes A Rooster Once Crowed, A Commentary on the Greatest Story Ever Told. We live in those few moments between the first and the second crow of the rooster: between decision and indecision, between knowing and being known. But do you even care? Small decisions made today establish our path for all time, and yet we piddle with a piece of this and a taste of that. We diet on wisdom from antiquity and gorge on culture that is next month's joke. This story is an opportunity to gorge on Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, in context. It is the Gospel of Jesus Christ and an opportunity to see for yourself what it actually is, rather than what we mold it to be, and to finally choose whether or not to care. Through small stories and a modern context, this book will help you understand and decide what you believe about the greatest story ever told.

Book The Aftermath of Slavery

Book excerpt: "William Albert Sinclair, born a slave in 1858, grew up in South Carolina during the tumultuous years of the Civil War and Reconstruction. Influenced by his childhood experiences, Sinclair spent his life fighting for the rights of African Americans and was an active member of the Constitution League, and their successor, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Inspired by the scholarship and activism of T. Thomas Fortune and W. E. B. Du Bois, Sinclair published The Aftermath of Slavery: A Study of the Condition and Environment of the American Negro, one of the most complete analyses of slavery and the years immediately following emancipation. First published in 1905, The Aftermath of Slavery provided a historical analysis of the late nineteenth century that underscored the existence of black resistance to white domination during slavery and Reconstruction"--University of South Carolina Press website.
