Book excerpt: For Stick “Mac” McLaughlin, it’s all about family: the stalwart friends, her former gang of bootlegging hijackers, and, above all, her lover and their daughter. So when New York mobsters begin squeezing the livelihood of new friend Rey, a veteran rumrunner on rural Lake George, Mac lends Rey resources but remains safely distant from enemies of the past. Grateful for help, Rey opens her backwoods life to Mac’s seasoned, gun-toting crew, but never expects it to include the likes of petite bombshell Millie. The buxom, wily spitfire’s gumption and sass are as vital to the cause as they are aggravating…and beguiling. But the Mob soon discovers a nemesis within its ranks, and, in the ultimate retaliation, draws Mac from anonymity by threatening everything she holds dear. Now, to finally end this deep-woods nightmare, Mac must cross the line with a vengeance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War on Crime revises the history of the New Deal transformation and suggests a new model for political history-one which recognizes that cultural phenomena and the political realm produce, between them, an idea of "the state." The war on crime was fought with guns and pens, movies and legislation, radio and government hearings. All of these methods illuminate this period of state transformation, and perceptions of that emergent state, in the years of the first New Deal. The creation of G-men and gangsters as cultural heroes in this period not only explores the Depression-era obsession with crime and celebrity, but it also lends insight on how citizens understood a nation undergoing large political and social changes. Anxieties about crime today have become a familiar route for the creation of new government agencies and the extension of state authority. It is important to remember the original "war on crime" in the 1930s-and the opportunities it afforded to New Dealers and established bureaucrats like J. Edgar Hoover-as scholars grapple with the ways states assert influence over populations, local authority, and party politics while they pursue goals such as reducing popular violence and protecting private property.

Book Henry Hudson and the Algonquins of New York

Download or read book Henry Hudson and the Algonquins of New York written by Evan T. Pritchard and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year was 1609, and British explorer Henry Hudson had landed in North America at the bidding of the Dutch East India Company. But Hudson was not the first man to set foot on Manhattan Island. Henry Hudson and the Algonquins of New York chronicles this historic "discovery" with a hereto unknown perspective—that of the people who met Hudson's boat on their shore. Using all available sources, including oral history passed down to today's Algonquins, Evan Pritchard tells a colonization story through several lenses: from Hudson himself, as well as his bodyguard, scribe, and personal Judas, Robert Juet; to the Eastern Algonquin people, who saw his boat as a floating waterfowl, and his arrival as the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy.
