Book Male to Female Crossdressing in Early Modern English Literature

Download or read book Male to Female Crossdressing in Early Modern English Literature written by Simone Chess and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines and theorizes the oft-ignored phenomenon of male-to-female (MTF) crossdressing in early modern drama, prose, and poetry, inviting MTF crossdressing episodes to take a fuller place alongside instances of female-to-male crossdressing and boy actors’ crossdressing, which have long held the spotlight in early modern gender studies. The author argues that MTF crossdressing episodes are especially rich sources for socially-oriented readings of queer gender—that crossdressers’ genders are constructed and represented in relation to romantic partners, communities, and broader social structures like marriage, economy, and sexuality. Further, she argues that these relational representations show that the crossdresser and his/her allies often benefit financially, socially, and erotically from his/her queer gender presentation, a corrective to the dominant idea that queer gender has always been associated with shame, containment, and correction. By attending to these relational and beneficial representations of MTF crossdressers in early modern literature, the volume helps to make a larger space for queer, genderqueer, male-bodied and queer-feminine representations in our conversations about early modern gender and sexuality.

Download or read book Why Not written by Barbara Deloto and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Male feminization for fun and growth? Why not? It's a question that critical thinkers ask about many subjects. Everyday there's someone who sees something and instead of saying no they ask, why not? What if the Wright brothers agreed with everyone that man can't fly? What if Henry Ford believed like everyone else that there could be no mass production? What if Galileo gave up on the idea that the world is round and not flat like the Church wanted him to? If something can be beneficial for you or others, but the accepted societal view says it's wrong, does that really make it wrong? Male-to-female crossdressing is one of those things. Sometimes viewed as an unmanly due to societal paradigms and beliefs and called a deviant behavior, it's carried a stigma with it. Does that mean it shouldn't be done? Women are allowed to cross-dress; it has become commonplace for women to wear men's styles of clothing, yet men are forced to stay in men's clothes. Dresses, skirts, stockings and all the feminine accoutrements have fallen to the wayside for most women today, and it's perfectly acceptable for them to wear flannel shirts with jeans, or sweatpants with sneakers or flat shoes. Why not? Why shouldn't a male be offered the same flexibility? Until the time comes when open-mindedness is more prevalent, and paradigms and beliefs are changed, it's still possible to do in secret or with likeminded people and groups, and the benefits are just as great. To balance the individual's masculine and feminine energies and activate the rise on Maslow's hierarchy of needs is not a trivial thing, and that is just one of many benefits it brings. If you, a person close to you, a spouse or partner, or a friend of yours is involved in male-to-female crossdressing, has an interest in it, or is bored and wants to try something new and exciting, then drop the veil of illusions by creating a new feminine illusion and thrive. Read on and see what benefits can follow in this thoughtful short read that just might improve your or someone else's life-or at least help you understand it better. Look inside now.

Book Head Over Heels

Download or read book Head Over Heels written by Virginia Erhardt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Candid, first-hand accounts of couples who stay together despite highly emotional gender issues. Head Over Heels gives voice to thirty ordinary women who live extraordinary lives as partners to crossdressers, transgenderists, and male-to-female transsexuals. These unique women discuss, with honesty and great candor, how they first learned of their partners’ gender issues, how they’ve coped with the emotions that followed, how they’ve dealt with concerns about privacy/secrecy, and how they’ve handled disclosure to children, friends, and family members. Far from a collection of “happily ever after” stories, these narratives are filled with pain, courage, curiosity, and joy as each woman struggles to redefine a relationship that includes intimacy, social acceptance, dignity, and respect. The women whose stories are featured in Head Over Heels didn't know their partners were gender-variant when they first met. Some found out early on; others learned of their husbands' gender variance after decades of marriage. Some were told by their husbands—men they considered “regular guys;” others found out on their own, sometimes in shocking ways. Their stories represent a wide spectrum of women's life experiences with crossdressers, transgenderists, transsexuals who are nonoperative, pre-operative, and post-operative, families without children, families with children at home, and families with children who have left home. But these women share one thing in common: each has decided to stay in her relationship, exploring her new life with an open, yet cautious, heart. Some of the voices heard in Head Over Heels: “While putting my clothes on, I found a sales receipt on the bureau from K-Mart for shoes, a bra, and stockings. My immediate thought was that my husband had a girlfriend.” “He dressed for me one night and it was the worst experience of both our lives. I was shocked and he knew it and that hurt him.” “My siblings had been aware of Trish’s transsexualism for several years when she went full-time. They have told me that while I will always be welcome in their homes, Trish is not.” “My husband may think differently, but I do have a sexual identity. Actually, I’m real clear about it—I am a woman and he is a man. I do not allow him to crossdress in the bedroom. I married a man; therefore, I will sleep with a man.” Head Over Heels also includes historical and current information about resources and support for wives of gender-variant people, and a substantive introduction that includes basic information about sexual and gender identity and related issues.

Book Spectrums of Shakespearean Crossdressing

Download or read book Spectrums of Shakespearean Crossdressing written by Courtney Bailey Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since young male players were the norm during the English Renaissance, were all cross-dressed performances of female characters played with the same degree of seriousness? Probably not. Spectrums of Representation in Shakespearean Crossdressing examines these varied types of female characters in English Renaissance drama, drawing from a range of play texts themselves in order to investigate if evidence exists for varying performance practices for male-to-female crossdressing. This book argues for a reading of the representation of female characters on the English Renaissance stage that not only suggests categorizing crossdressing along a spectrum of theatrical artifice, but also explores how this range of artifice enriches our understanding of the plays. The scholarship surrounding cross-dressing rarely makes this distinction, since in our study of early modern plays we tend to accept as a matter of course that all crossdressing was essentially the same. The basis of Spectrums of Representation in Shakespearean Crossdressing is that it was not.
