Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seminal study of the Christian theory of the atonement examines the story of Christian violence. In Cross Purposes, Anthony Bartlett claims that the key Western doctrines of atonement have been dominated by a logic of violence and sacrifice as a means of salvation. Subsequently, the graphic suffering of the crucified in images and narrative has served to unleash a prolonged sacrificial crisis in which there is always a potential need to displace blame. These doctrines of atonement have sanctioned wide-spread violence in the name of Christ throughout history. But Bartlett argues that a minority tradition also exists. He contends that the tradition of the compassion of Christ provides the possible way out of Christian violence. Bartlett's study gives this tradition a dynamic new reading, showing how it undoes both divine and human violence and offers a powerfully transformative version of atonement for the contemporary world. Cross Purposes provides a rich historical and theological overview of the evolution of various atonement theories, using literature, art, and philosophy to provide a creative and provocative reading of Christian atonement. Anthony Bartlett is engaged in post-doctoral research and is an instructor in Religion at Syracuse University. For: Seminarians; clergy; graduate students; professors

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1953, twenty-four-year old Nicolas Bouvier and his artist friend Thierry Vernet set out to make their way overland from their native Geneva to the Khyber Pass. They had a rattletrap Fiat and a little money, but above all they were equipped with the certainty that by hook or by crook they would reach their destination, and that there would be unanticipated adventures, curious companionship, and sudden illumination along the way. The Way of the World, which Bouvier fashioned over the course of many years from his journals, is an entrancing story of adventure, an extraordinary work of art, and a voyage of self-discovery on the order of Robert M. Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. As Bouvier writes, “You think you are making a trip, but soon it is making—or unmaking—you.”

Book excerpt: IN 2016, BOB WELCH--that rare combination of newspaper columnist and Christian--prayed a prayer that he believes changed his life. Over the next five years, he discovered he'd been quietly complicit in allowing the rage of far-right politics to distort the faith of evangelicals, including his own. During a 2020 sailboat trip to spread his mother's ashes, Welch commits to writing a book that he knows may rankle his fellow believers, but he can't stay silent. Amid hot-button issues such as Trump, COVID, and race, he dares to ply the shores of uncertainty in an attempt to answer a question theologian Henri Nouwen so eloquently asked: "To whom do I belong? To God or to the world?"

Book The Valley of Cross Purposes

Download or read book The Valley of Cross Purposes written by Carol J. Frost PhD and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1800s, Charles Nordhoff forged the shape of modern journalism and profoundly influenced both politicians andpolitics. Principled, activist, investigative, and a champion of the disenfranchised and poor, he was more interested incharacter and results than in personality and credit. And like the blacksmith wielding his hammer, he left us the tangibleproducts of his labors, but few details of himself. With superb research, illuminating insights, and eloquent prose, Carol Frost brings Nordhoff vividly to life: both the man andhis extraordinary impacts on politics, journalism, government, and public discourseimpacts that are still defining publiclife today. Journalists, historians, and activists will find context and inspiration in this captivating and previously untold story, a storythat in many important ways feels like it was written about the events and debates of our own time rather than those ofmore than 100 years ago.
