Book Cross Name Index to Medicinal Plants

Download or read book Cross Name Index to Medicinal Plants written by Anthony R. Torkelson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-02-23 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume of The Cross Name Index to Medicinal Plants lists more than 12,000 common names in 100 languages, dialects and regions for over 1900 plants used in Indian medicine. Both scientific and common names of medicinal plants are cross indexed to each other. Languages of the common names are included. The Cross Name Index to Medicinal Plants, Volume IV, stands alone; it does not repeat any of the common names of the previous volumes and it references all scientific names for the plants without recourse to the previous volumes. The need for this book was prompted by the diversity of the common names of the plants. Each language, and sometimes each country with the same language, may have a different name for a given plant (and often many names for the same plant). This difference in terminology has caused confusion and inhibited the scientific study of plant medicinals. This volume was compiled as a tool to help unravel the medical botany literature and to aid researchers in their quest to tap into the vast literature which records pragmatic experimentation in botanical medicine, whether medical, folkloric or magical.

Book Popular Medicinal Plants in Portland and Kingston Jamaica

Download or read book Popular Medicinal Plants in Portland and Kingston Jamaica written by Ina Vandebroek and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the results from over a year of ethnobotanical research in a rural and an urban community in Jamaica, where we interviewed more than 100 people who use medicinal plants for healthcare. The goal of this research was to better understand patterns of medicinal plant knowledge, and to find out which plants are used in consensus by local people for a variety of illnesses. For this book, we selected 25 popular medicinal plant species mentioned during fieldwork. Through individual interviews, we were able to rank plants according to their frequency of mention, and categorized the medicinal uses for each species as “major” (mentioned by more than 20% of people in a community) or “minor” (mentioned by more than 5%, but less than 20% of people). Botanical identification of plant specimens collected in the wild allowed for cross-linking of common and scientific plant names. To supplement field research, we undertook a comprehensive search and review of the ethnobotanical and biomedical literature. Our book summarizes all this information in detail under specific sub-headings.
