Principal decreases from 1955 in millions of acres were: oats, corn, sorghum grain, and barley, making the sizable reduction of million acres in feed grains. All hay acreage was down million acres; cotton, 123; rye, peanuts, rice, 0.3;and tobacco, Fewer crops increased in harvested acreage includ ing soybeans, million acres; winter wheat, Spring wheat, and flaxseed, ' The Soil Bank Act, enacted by the Congress May 28, 1956, although too late to fore stall many plantings, enlisted about 12 millions of acres of land with consequent diversion from crop harvest of much of this acreage. The total acreage of crops planted or grown in 1956 was about 346 million acres. This is an increase of percent over the winter acreage sown for the 1936 crop and is about 4 percent above the average for 1931-1985. The second estimate of the wheat acreage in the Punjab, India, is placed at acres, which is a slight increase over the January estimate and compared with the second estimate last season of acres and the final figure of acres. The first official estimate of the 1936 wheat crop of Italy is reported by the International Institute of Agriculture at bushels. This compares with bushels produced in 1935 and is 11 percent under the average of 1980 l954. The 1956 rye crop amounted to bushels as against bushels produced in 1986 and the average for 1930-1984 of bushels. During the last half of the month prices declined but an advance during the first part of January regained all of the loss of the latter part of December. This advance was attributed to slow deliveries at terminal markets, unfavorable United stat es crop news, and also partly the result of the trade discounting prospects of farm relief legislation designed to raise wheat prices. May futures at Liverpool changed very little as a salt of the Chicago advance. On January 3 the spread between Chicago and Liver pool was 4 cents per bushel, Liverpool above Chicago; on January 10, May futures at Chicago closed at 50 to 50 cents, while the close at Liverpool was cents per bushel. On the 16th of January Liverpool was again above Chicago but only two cents h' gher. At Buenos Aires, where a new crop is now being harvested, prices declined somewhat during December. A small advance during the first week of January was followed by another decline during the second week, leaving February futures on January 14 at 36 cents per bushel Which was about 12 cents under Liverpool'.
