Since the end of November, the seed market has strengthened somewhat, prices have increased slightly, and it is the impression Of some Danish seed companies that the market from now on will ease upward. Faced with relatively low prices this year, Danish seed merchants report that many farmers will plow down areas intended for seed production in 1956. On the assumption that seed supplies will be less during 1956-57, the large seed companies are holding back on offerings; and Speculators are reported to be buying for the same reason. Principal decreases from 1955 in millions of acres were: oats, corn, sorghum grain, and barley, making the sizable reduction of million acres in feed grains. All hay acreage was down million acres; cotton, 123; rye, peanuts, rice, 0.3;and tobacco, Fewer crops increased in harvested acreage includ ing soybeans, million acres; winter wheat, Spring wheat, and flaxseed, ' The Soil Bank Act, enacted by the Congress May 28, 1956, although too late to fore stall many plantings, enlisted about 12 millions of acres of land with consequent diversion from crop harvest of much of this acreage. The total acreage of crops planted or grown in 1956 was about 346 million acres. Mr. Evan Campbell, president of the Rhodesia Tobacco Association, said in Salisbury on July 28: 'the crop has been disappointing to all concerned the farmer, the buyer and commerce. The market is firm, and the pattern of buying is now reasonable. If the quality of the crop had been as good as we expected, prices would have been satisfactory.
