Book Biological Control of Weeds in Australia

Download or read book Biological Control of Weeds in Australia written by Jim Cullen and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological control of weeds has been practised for over 100 years and Australia has been a leader in this weed management technique. The classical example of control of prickly pears in Australia by the cactus moth Cactoblastis cactorum, which was imported from the Americas, helped to set the future for biocontrol of weeds in many countries. Since then there have been many projects using Classical Biological Control to manage numerous weed species, many of which have been successful. Importantly, there have been no serious negative non-target impacts – the technique, when practised as it is in Australia, is safe and environmentally friendly. Economic assessments have shown that biocontrol of weeds in Australia has provided exceedingly high benefit-to-cost ratios. This book reviews biological control of weeds in Australia to 2011, covering over 90 weed species and a multitude of biological control agents and potential agents. Each chapter has been written by practising biological control of weeds researchers and provides details of the weed, the history of its biological control, exploration for agents, potential agents studied and agents released and the outcomes of those releases. Many weeds were successfully controlled, some were not, many projects are still underway, some have just begun, however all are reported in detail in this book. Biological Control of Weeds in Australia will provide invaluable information for biological control researchers in Australia and elsewhere. Agents used in Australia could be of immense value to other countries that suffer from the same weeds as Australia. The studies reported here provide direction to future research and provide examples and knowledge for researchers and students.

Book A Field Guide to Weeds in Australia

Download or read book A Field Guide to Weeds in Australia written by Charles Lamp and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This field guide begins with some simple explanations of the botanical terms inescapable in describing plants. Its organization does not follow the formal layout of the definitive Floras of the region. Plants are not arranged in their families but are listed in alphabetical order of scientific name. It is to this extent self-indexing. However, an index of common plant names is included so that those who only know a plant by one of these names, can locate it and confirm its description."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Crop Weeds

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Laurence Wilding
  • Publisher : ISBS
  • Release : 1986
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Crop Weeds written by James Laurence Wilding and published by ISBS. This book was released on 1986 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a straightforward guide to the identification of the main weeds, particularly in their seedling stage, in temperate crops (wheat, oats, barley, triticale, lupins, fields peas, chickpeas, safflower, sunflower, linseed and rapeseed) throughout Australia. It is critical to identify weeds at the earliest possible stage so that they can be controlled before seriously reducing crop yields. This practical publication enables farmers and others to identify all the important weed seedlings as well as the mature plants. The text is brief and recognition of the species relies mainly on drawings and photographs of weeds and their seeds.

Book Biology and Management of Problematic Crop Weed Species

Download or read book Biology and Management of Problematic Crop Weed Species written by Bhagirath Chauhan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-09-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weeds are the main biological constraint to crop production throughout the year. Uncontrolled weeds could cause 100% yield loss. In Australia, the overall cost of weeds to Australian grain growers was estimated at AU$ 3.3 billion annually. In terms of yield losses, weeds amounted to 2.7 million tonnes of grains at a national level. In the USA, weeds cost US$ 33 billion in lost crop production annually. In India, these costs were estimated to be much higher (US$ 11 billion). These studies from different economies suggest that weeds cause substantial yield and economic loss. Biology and Management of Problematic Weed Species details the biology of key weed species, providing vital information on seed germination and production, as well as factors affecting weed growth. These species include Chenopodium album, Chloris truncata and C. virgate, Conyza bonariensis and C. canadensis, Cyperus rotundus, and many more. This information is crucial for researchers and growers to develop integrated weed management (IWM) strategies. Written by leading experts across the globe, this book is an essential read to plant biologists and ecologists, crop scientists, and students and researchers interested in weed science. Provides detailed information on the biology of different key weed species Covers weed seed germination and emergence Presents the factors affecting weed growth and seed production

Book The Economic Impact of Weeds in Australia

Download or read book The Economic Impact of Weeds in Australia written by J. A. Sinden and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New economic research undertaken by the Weeds CRC through the University of New England has established that the annual cost of weeds to Australian agriculture exceeds $3.5 billion, and may be as high as $4.5 billion per year. The figure varies because of seasonal conditions, commodity prices and weed infestations, but on average the estimate is an annual net loss of $4 billion. This updates the estimate of $2 billion per year for 1981-82 by Combellack, and compares with estimates for salinity of an annual net loss of $200 million.

Book Weed Biology and Management

    Book Details:
  • Author : Inderjit
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 9401705526
  • Pages : 550 pages

Download or read book Weed Biology and Management written by Inderjit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weeds hold an enigmatic and sometimes-controversial place in agriculture, where they are generally reviled, grudgingly tolerated, and occasionally admired. In most cases, growers make considerable effort to reduce the negative economic impact of weeds because they compete with crops for resources and hinder field operations, thereby affecting crop productivity and quality, and ultimately the sustainability of agriculture. Weed control in production agriculture is commonly achieved through the integration of chemical, biological, and mechanical management methods. Chemicals (herbicides) usually inhibit the growth and establishment of weed plants by interfering with various physiological and biochemical pathways. Biological methods include crop competition, smother crops, rotation crops, and allelopathy, as well as specific insect predators and plant pathogens. Mechanical methods encompass an array of tools from short handled hoes to sophisticated video-guided robotic machines. Integrating these technologies, in order to relieve the negative impacts of weeds on crop production in a way that allows growers to optimize profits and preserve human health and the environment, is the science of weed management.
