Book A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett of the State of Tennessee

Download or read book A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett of the State of Tennessee written by Davy Crockett and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even as a pup, Davy Crockett "always delighted to be in the very thickest of danger." In his own inimitable style, he describes his earliest days in Tennessee, his two marriages, his career as an Indian fighter, his bear hunts, and his electioneering. His reputation as a b'ar hunter (he killed 105 in one season) sent him to Congress, and he was voted in and out as the price of cotton (and his relations with the Jacksonians) rose and fell. In 1834, when this autobiography appeared, Davy Crockett was already a folk hero with an eye on the White House. But a year later he would lose his seat in Congress and turn toward Texas and, ultimately, the Alamo.

Book The Wild West Meets the Big Apple

Download or read book The Wild West Meets the Big Apple written by Michael O'Connor and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-27 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do Bat Masterson, Bill Cody, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, David Crockett, William Tecumseh Sherman, Mark Twain, Elizabeth Custer, and the Statue of Liberty all have in common? They all spent time in New York City! Each chapter in this fascinating book provides a short biography of a Western hero or celebrity and tells how they made their mark on the city that many considered the media and cultural capital of the time. By tracing their path across the city—from casual visits, media campaigns, and political tours to family ties, shopping sprees, and steady employment—author Michael P. O'Connor aptly demonstrates how New York City influenced the lives and livelihood of many familiar names in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Locations around the city significant to the Westerners, including the Old Bowery Theatre, the Market Exchange, Battery Park, the St. Nicholas Hotel, and St. Patrick's Cathedral, are illustrated through historic images and modern photos accompanied by brief histories. A timeline from 1812 to 1933 highlights the settling of the West alongside a history of New York City. An appendix provides a listing of Alamo defenders who had ties to the city, and a bibliography provides an extensive list of further reading and reference materials. O'Connor's meticulous research and passion for the subject make this an informative and entertaining blend of New York City history and Western lore perfect for both tourists and historians.

Book Promoting Global Monetary and Financial Stability

Download or read book Promoting Global Monetary and Financial Stability written by Claudio Borio and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the global organisation of central banks, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has played a significant role in the momentous changes the international monetary and financial system has undergone over the past half century. This book offers a key contribution to understanding these changes. It explores the rise of the emerging market economies, the resulting shifts in the governance of the international financial system, and the role of central bank cooperation in this process. In this truly multidisciplinary effort, scholars from the fields of economics, history, political science and law unravel the most poignant episodes that marked this period, including European monetary unification, the paradigm shifts in economic and financial analysis, the origins and influence of macro-financial stability frameworks, the rise of soft law in international financial governance, central bank crisis management in the wake of the Great Financial Crisis, and, finally, the institutional evolution of the BIS itself.

Book Pathways to Urban Sustainability

Download or read book Pathways to Urban Sustainability written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities have experienced an unprecedented rate of growth in the last decade. More than half the world's population lives in urban areas, with the U.S. percentage at 80 percent. Cities have captured more than 80 percent of the globe's economic activity and offered social mobility and economic prosperity to millions by clustering creative, innovative, and educated individuals and organizations. Clustering populations, however, can compound both positive and negative conditions, with many modern urban areas experiencing growing inequality, debility, and environmental degradation. The spread and continued growth of urban areas presents a number of concerns for a sustainable future, particularly if cities cannot adequately address the rise of poverty, hunger, resource consumption, and biodiversity loss in their borders. Intended as a comparative illustration of the types of urban sustainability pathways and subsequent lessons learned existing in urban areas, this study examines specific examples that cut across geographies and scales and that feature a range of urban sustainability challenges and opportunities for collaborative learning across metropolitan regions. It focuses on nine cities across the United States and Canada (Los Angeles, CA, New York City, NY, Philadelphia, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, Grand Rapids, MI, Flint, MI, Cedar Rapids, IA, Chattanooga, TN, and Vancouver, Canada), chosen to represent a variety of metropolitan regions, with consideration given to city size, proximity to coastal and other waterways, susceptibility to hazards, primary industry, and several other factors.
