Book The Confessions of Al Capone

Download or read book The Confessions of Al Capone written by Loren D. Estleman and published by Forge Books. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple award-winner Loren D. Estleman has produced a major biographical novel on the infamous Mobster known as Scarface, rigorously researched and deftly nuanced to offer an intimate portrait of the gangster whose terrible crimes and larger-than-life persona have both fascinated and appalled the world for nearly a century; whose legacy is still widely debated; and whose brutally ambitious career in the Mafia continues to inspire filmmakers and writers to plumb its excesses and its contradictions. In 1944, after Al Capone has been released from prison, J. Edgar Hoover assigns an FBI junior agent to insinuate himself into Capone's life and gain his trust so that Hoover can nail as many of Capone's Mob confederates as possible. Capone, suffering from the neurological effects of syphilis, is alternately lucid, full of the passion and energy that fueled his rise to the pinnacle of American crime...and rambling or ranting, the broken shell of a man released from prison so he could die at home with his family. With the superb narrative gifts honed in dozens of novels, Estleman has captured the essence of this American icon as never before. With subtly nuanced portrayals of those in Capone's circle—his underrated wife Mae Capone, members of the Chicago Outfit including the deadly Frank Nitti—as well as his nemesis, J. Edgar Hoover, Hoover's secretary Helen Gandy and others, The Confessions of Al Capone is a major literary achievement. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book Surviving in Black Skin

Download or read book Surviving in Black Skin written by Webster E. Moore and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surviving in Black Skin By: Webster E. Moore Surviving in Black Skin is about growth, revelations, going into the unknown, becoming more than everything we've ever learned, and simply loving the desire and pleasure of discovery. This book is about Webster E. Moore’s discovery that people in black skins were the first architects, the first astronomers, the first physicians, the first scientists. He then discovered after experiencing the constant negation of any history beyond slavery that the history of people in black skins are the blueprints, the foundation, the mold from which people in white skins built their history. The message here is how there is no end to the racism that Christianity used to support slavery and the lynching of people in black skins. That is relevant to the continued lynching of blacks today by the old slave catchers called police. What we as readers will take away from this book is a better sense of what happened and that we are all equal beings under God. The politics of religions that supported slavery and the practice of racism over the centuries, continuing today with their false teachings about the Jews being enslaved by the Egyptians, and all the falsities related to that narrative, must change. The changes in thinking will free the children of people in black skins as well as other skin colors to know that their people are the ones that fed, clothed, sheltered, and supplied the foundation that built and maintained western civilization.

Book A Thousand Places Left Behind

Download or read book A Thousand Places Left Behind written by Peter K. Lutken Jr. and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born and raised in Mississippi, Peter K. Lutken, Jr. (1920–2014) joined the army in 1941 and was assigned to the Coast Artillery. Originally sent to India to guard airfields, he was reassigned to the British V Force, then the American OSS (Office of Strategic Services and precursor to the CIA) after he volunteered for reconnaissance missions behind Japanese lines. Skills he had learned as a boy in the backwoods and swamps around the Pearl River stood him in good stead, and by the end of the war, he attained the rank of major, commanding an entire battalion of ethnic Kachins and other local people of northern Burma (now called Myanmar). Lutken's stories carry the reader along as he sails on a troop ship to India, then treks into the mountainous jungles of northern Burma to gather intelligence and engage in guerrilla warfare with the Japanese. In his straightforward way, he describes how he learned the language of the Kachins and much about their customs and legends, and how he fought alongside them for the course of the war. Adventures of rafting uncharted rivers, surprise attacks, sabotage, natural hazards and disease, feasts and ceremonies, the plight of refugees, and tragic events of war are all told from the perspective of a young soldier, who finds himself half a world away from home. Based on hundreds of pages of transcripts from tapes recorded late in his life, A Thousand Places Left Behind recounts the untold story not just of one soldier’s experiences, but of the little-known history of American and British forces in Burma during World War II. Supported by original maps based on Lutken’s personal travels as well as photographs from his scrapbook, the book traces Lutken’s journey overseas, his expeditions into the jungle, and his return to Jackson, Mississippi in 1945. Beyond the war, Lutken’s connection with the Kachins culminated in “Project Old Soldier,” a crop exchange program which he and other veterans of OSS Detachment 101 initiated in the 1990s and which lasted until after his death in 2014. The book tells a remarkable story of bravery, friendship, history, and the unbreakable bonds forged in times of war.

Book Hunt for the Last Public Enemy in Northeastern Ohio The Alvin Creepy Karpis and his Road to Alcatraz

Download or read book Hunt for the Last Public Enemy in Northeastern Ohio The Alvin Creepy Karpis and his Road to Alcatraz written by Julie A Thompson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last Public Enemy No. 1 of the Depression era, Alvin "Creepy" Karpis reportedly compiled a record of fifty-four aliases, fifteen bank robberies, fourteen murders, three jailbreaks and two kidnappings. Roaming the country to evade capture (or worse), Karpis regularly hid out in northeastern Ohio, where he and the remnants of the infamous Ma Barker Gang perpetrated the last great American train heist in Garrettsville. His criminal career came to an end when J. Edgar Hoover and his famed G-Men apprehended the man they wanted more than any other in New Orleans. From there, Karpis found himself confined on Alcatraz Island, where he spent nearly twenty-six years--more than any inmate in the prison's history. Historian Julie Thompson tells the true story of Karpis's life and career, a riveting tale taking readers from rural Kansas and Ohio to the bustling streets of the Big Easy and into the bleak innards of "the Rock."
