Book Bertrand Russell s Dialogue with His Contemporaries Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Bertrand Russell s Dialogue with His Contemporaries Routledge Revivals written by Elizabeth Ramsden Eames and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, this book considers Bertrand Russell’s philosophy through his correspondence with others. Indeed, his exchanges with his elders in philosophy, with his contemporaries, and with one of his most outstanding pupils are brought to life in this judicious exposition: meticulously documented before being judged with insight and sympathy, as well as impartiality. Elizabeth Ramsden Eames here explores the issues that emerged from Russell’s exchanges with certain other philosophers, and interprets the resulting reciprocal influences and reactions. The conversations presented cover subjects such as: the nature of relations; pluralism versus monism; the relation of the subject and object in knowledge; the analysis of experience; the definition of truth; the analysis of belief; and the theory of meaning. These have been in the forefront of philosophical discussion in our time, and Russell’s dialogue with his contemporaries promises to illumine them.

Book The Nature of Truth second edition

Download or read book The Nature of Truth second edition written by Michael P. Lynch and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive and essential collection of classic and new essays on analytic theories of truth, revised and updated, with seventeen new chapters. The question "What is truth?" is so philosophical that it can seem rhetorical. Yet truth matters, especially in a "post-truth" society in which lies are tolerated and facts are ignored. If we want to understand why truth matters, we first need to understand what it is. The Nature of Truth offers the definitive collection of classic and contemporary essays on analytic theories of truth. This second edition has been extensively revised and updated, incorporating both historically central readings on truth's nature as well as up-to-the-moment contemporary essays. Seventeen new chapters reflect the current trajectory of research on truth.

Book Scenarios and Indicators for Sustainable Development Towards A Critical Assessment of Achievements and Challenges

Download or read book Scenarios and Indicators for Sustainable Development Towards A Critical Assessment of Achievements and Challenges written by Joachim H. Spangenberg and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-03-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and telecoupling are enhancing the complexity of the coupled socio-ecological system constituted by the interaction between the global ecosphere and the anthroposphere. As a result, the demand for tools to identify transformative innovations, assess future risks, and support precautionary decisions for sustainability is growing by the day in business and politics. Scenarios are a means of simplification, reducing the real-world complexity to a limited number of essential factors to analyze their interactions and support policy formulation, with indicators as communication and monitoring tools. In particular, in a time of “fake news” and “alternative truths” a critical reflection amongst producers and users of scenarios and indicators is overdue—the capability for critical self-reflection is what distinguishes science from pseudo-science, and is a condition of trust. The authors of this book test established measurement and modeling approaches against new challenges, assess the weaknesses of prevailing innovation theories and the political-ideological embedment of archetypical scenarios, highlight deficits in taking the physical basics into account, and the need to understand global interaction and the stepwise process of energy transitions, point out technical as well as conceptual weaknesses in data collection, harmonization and indicator generation, always with a view to solving problems.

Book The Space that Separates A Realist Theory of Art

Download or read book The Space that Separates A Realist Theory of Art written by Nick Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Space that Separates: A Realist Theory of Art radically challenges our assumptions about what art is, what art does, who is doing it, and why it matters. Rejecting the modernist and market-driven misconception that art is only what artists do, Wilson instead presents a realist case for living artfully. Art is defined as the skilled practice of giving shareable form to our experiences of being-in-relation with the real; that is to say, the causally generative domain of the world that extends beyond our direct observation, comprising relations, structures, mechanisms, possibilities, powers, processes, systems, forces, values, ways of being. In communicating such aesthetic experience we behold life’s betweenness – "the space that separates", so coming to know ourselves as connected. Providing the first dedicated and comprehensive account of art and aesthetics from a critical realist perspective – Aesthetic Critical Realism (ACR), Wilson argues for a profound paradigm shift in how we understand and care for culture in terms of our system(s) of value recognition. Fortunately, we have just the right tool to help us achieve this transformation – and it’s called art. Offering novel explanatory accounts of art, aesthetic experience, value, play, culture, creativity, artistic truth and beauty, this book will appeal to a wide audience of students and scholars of art, aesthetics, human development, philosophy and critical realism, as well as cultural practitioners and policy-makers.

Book Truth Its Nature Criteria and Conditions

Download or read book Truth Its Nature Criteria and Conditions written by Haig Khatchadourian and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truth: Its criteria and conditions is an in-depth critical-and-constructive inquiry in almost equal measure. The theories of the nature of empirical truth critically considered include two forms of the traditional correspondence theory; truth as appraisal; truth as identity of proposition and truth; en emotive theory of truth; P.F. Strawson’s performative theory, and N. Rescher’s novel theory of a coherentist criterion of truth. The constructive parts include an analysis of the concept of “a fact,” the meaning and uses of ‘true’ and ‘false’ in empirical statements, together with the various sorts of conditions for their correct application; the appraisive/evaluative uses of true and false statements; and the performative-cum-cognitive uses of ‘true’ empirical statements; and the conditions of the performative uses of ‘true.’ A significant claim about the concept of truth is its indefinablity; albeit for quite different reasons from Gottlob Frege’s reason based on his argument against the correspondence theory of truth.

Book The Six Ways of Knowing

Download or read book The Six Ways of Knowing written by D. M. Datta and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the Vedanta standpoint, according to which there are six sources of knowledge. The conceptions of these different kinds of knowledge, with all the arguments given by the Vedantins to prove their independence and ultimacy, are critically discussed here in the light of modern Western concepts, and the attempt has been made to present the conclusions to students of Western Philosophy in a clear and lucid form. As the purpose of this work is to bring the problems, concepts and theories of the Vedantins within the focus of modern Western thought, the method adopted is one of critical analysis, comparison issues from extraneous aspects with which they are often associated.

Download or read book Semantics and Truth written by Jan Woleński and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a historical (with an outline of the history of the concept of truth from antiquity to our time) and systematic exposition of the semantic theory of truth formulated by Alfred Tarski in the 1930s. This theory became famous very soon and inspired logicians and philosophers. It has two different, but interconnected aspects: formal-logical and philosophical. The book deals with both, but it is intended mostly as a philosophical monograph. It explains Tarski’s motivation and presents discussions about his ideas (pro and contra) as well as points out various applications of the semantic theory of truth to philosophical problems (truth-criteria, realism and anti-realism, future contingents or the concept of correspondence between language and reality).
