Book Critical Elements of a Successful Succession Planning Strategy in Non profit Organizations

Download or read book Critical Elements of a Successful Succession Planning Strategy in Non profit Organizations written by Mark Ernest Tilbury and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literature review examines 27 articles, spanning two decades, that offer both general and specific recommendations on the critical elements of a successful succession planning process. Although the precise definition of succession planning varies, most articles agree that, simply put, succession planning is "doing all you can to ensure you have the right people in the right jobs at the right time" (Hills, 2009). Regarding the necessity for a succession planning strategy in either the for-profit or non-profit sectors, several articles identify the aging baby boomer generation and their looming mass exodus from the labor market (Barnett & Davis, 2008). The articles encompass research into the practices of succession planning, with several offering suggestions for implementation of for-profit models in the non-profit sector. This paper examines the common elements of a successful succession planning process as well as the specific adaptation of succession planning to the non-profit sector. It concludes with recommendations for further research on the subject and suggestions for alternative ways of viewing succession planning in small and medium sized non-profit organizations.

Book Succession Planning in Nonprofit Organizations and Transitioning Millennials Entering Into Leadership Positions

Download or read book Succession Planning in Nonprofit Organizations and Transitioning Millennials Entering Into Leadership Positions written by Kanesha Wingo and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the past decade, leadership has changed. The faces of leadership are changing into a new group of leaders with different strategies for leadership. Millennials have entered the workforce and are aged to enter into leadership positions. Millennial leadership will change the culture and operation of the workforce because of the unique way they prefer to operate as employees. Research has found that most millennials are entering the workforce while baby boomers are leaving the workforce and opening leadership and executive positions (Doyle, 2014). It also finds that millennials are the most difficult group of employees to recruit and retain. This can become a challenge when looking for employees to fill executive roles or implement them into succession plans. The need for leadership positions to be filled by competent and qualified employees are essential for all organizations. This need is fulfilled by succession planning. Succession planning is a plan that places a qualified incumbent into a leadership role in the event of succession. The plan would include an analysis based on the needs, goals, and strategies of the organization (HR Planning: Succession planning, 2015). In non-profit organizations the need for succession planning is very important. In small nonprofits with less than 50 employees it is recommended to find talent from within the organization. This allows new leadership to become installed with the same goals and a clear understanding of the mission and vision. An analysis of existing research and of my own qualitative research finds that most nonprofit organizations do not have an effective succession plan in place. It also finds that nonprofits are not prepared for millennial leaders. A face to face interview with a leader at XYZ Corporation finds that there is a method in place in the event of succession. They also mention that there is not a model or policy in place to allow continuity. A survey monkey survey distributed to nonprofit employees finds that many are not aware of what succession planning is or have not heard about it within their organization.

Book Succession Planning and Management

Download or read book Succession Planning and Management written by David Berke and published by Center for Creative Leadership. This book was released on 2005 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of succession-related practices is to ensure that there are ready replacements for key positions in an organization so that turnover will not negatively affect the organization's performance. CCL first published an annotated bibliography on succession planning in 1995. That bibliography focused primarily on the link between succession and management development. This bibliography has a broader scope; it is an update and expansion, commensurate with the maturation of this area of practice. In addition to linkages between succession and development, we also consider representative literature on CEO succession, high potentials, and succession systems and architecture. It is hoped that those who use this bibliography will find resources that help them in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing effective succession systems in their organizations.

Book excerpt: Executive director (ED) succession planning and the ED search process are two of the most important responsibilities of a nonprofit board of directors. But few know how to go about developing policies and procedures for these issues. This guide will provide you with step-by-step strategies, adaptable to any nonprofit. Developing an ED succession plan is strategy #9 in Toolkit #2, "The Top Twenty Nonprofit Sustainability Strategies. Any succession plan just also be complemented by a companion ED search process. Too often ED search committees scramble to hunt for the next ED with little thought to the profound impact their efforts will have on the future of their nonprofit. In their rush to fill the position, they fail to consider what type of ED they need, based on what phase of organizational development their nonprofit is in, and what leadership they need for long-term sustainability. Or, because they do not understand the duties of the ED, the committee will focus on hiring someone whose work experience and skills fit with the mission of the nonprofit, rather than on the critical core management competencies they need. Well written ED succession plans will ensure the long-term sustainability of the vision and mission of your nonprofit, helping you avoid the pitfalls of not planning for the day your ED will leave. And, a written search plan will help your nonprofit select the right ED to fit your needs. This toolkit will help you do both, providing in depth and practical looks at every aspect of these two critical board responsibilities.
