The mind of Wilson is a remarkable blending of the kindly and the bitterz - his praise is always full and hearty; his censure almost unendura ble: he appears to have no control over his likings or dislikings - at times, pursues with almost superhuman wrath, and then, again, becomes so generous and eloquent, that he absolutely makes an author's character, and establishes his position by a few sentences of approval. From all his criticisms there may be gathered some evidence of a sound heart; of a nature like the Highland breezes - keen, but healthy; often most invigo rating when most severe - but which may be safely encountered only by those whose stamina is unquestionable. The personal appearance of Professor Wilson is very remarkable: his frame is, like his mind, powerful and robust. His completion is florid, and his features are finely marked; the mouth is ex qu1sitely chiselled, the expression of his countenance is gentle to a degree; but there is a lurking dgvil in his keen gray eye, that gives a very intelligible hint to the observer. His forehead is broad and high. To us, among all the great men we have ever beheld - and they have not been few - there is not one who so thoroughly extorts a mingled sensation of love and fear. Here, as in other provinces, it is not knowledge, but a little knowl edge, that puffeth up, and for wonder at the thing known sub stitutes mere wonder at the knower thereof to a sciolist the starry heavens revolving in dead mechanism may be less than a Jacob's vision; but to the Newton they are more; for the same God still dwells enthroned there, and holy Influences, like Angels, still ascend and descend; and this clearer vision of a little but renders the remaining mystery the deeper and more divine. SO likewise is it with true Spiritual greatness. On the whole, that theory of no man being a hero to his valet, carries us but a little way into the real nature of the case. With a superficial meaning which is plain enough, it essentially holds good only of such heroes as are false, or else of such valets as are too genuine, as are Shoulder-knotted and brass-lacquered in soul as well as in body: of other sorts it does not hold. Milton was still a hero to the good Elwood. But we dwell not on that mean doctrine, which, true or false. I will endeavour to begin at the beginning, and not to end till I have got to some conclusion. As many readers are probably in the dark, and young persons may not have so much as heard of the Vengeur, we had perhaps better take-up the matter ab ovo, and study to carry uninstructed mankind comfortably along with us ad mala. I find, therefore, worthy Yorke, in searching through old files of newspapers, and other musty articles, as I have been obliged to do, that on the evening of the 10th of June 1794, a brilliant audience was, as often happens, assembled at the Opera House here in London.
