Bouman, comment. perpet. in Jac. ep., ed. 1863, the exposition of the Epistle by Lange (second edition, 1866) in Lange's Bibelwork, and the third edition of de Wette's exposition edited by Bruckner. Whilst in the rst of these works a deep and thorough examination of the thoughts of the Epistle is awanting, the work of Lange is too defective in exegetieal carefulness, which alone can lead to sure results. In order to comprehend the Epistle historically, Lange proceeds from the most arbitrary hypotheses, which often mislead him into very rash, and sometimes strange explanations. It is to be regretted that, with all his spiritual feeling and acuteness, he has not been able to put a proper bridle upon his imagination. The second edition of de Wette's Handbook, containing the exposition of the Epistles of Peter, Jude, and James, had been previously prepared by Bruckner. When in the preface to the third edition he says that he has subjected this portion of the Handbook to a thorough revision, and, as far as possible, has made the necessary additions and corrections, this assertion is completely justified by the work. Although the remarks of Bruckner are condensed, yet they are highly deserving of attention, being the result of a true exegetical insight. It were to be wished that Bruckner had been less trammelled by "the duty to preserve the work of de Wette as much as possible uncurtailed." Of the recent examinations on the relation of the Pauline View of justi cation to that of James, I will only here mention the familiar dissertation of Hengstenberg: "the Epistle of James," in Nos. 91-94 of the Exangelical Church Magazine, 1866; and the explanation of Jas. ii. Since not only Plato, but Pythagoras, and Zeno likewise, conversed with the J ews, and derived from them many of their notions and expressions; it is not at all won derful that we meet with something about a Oe'ioc Adyoc in their writings; and b so. Reciprocit of communication Philo, who was well versed in t e dogmas o the Heathen philosophers, as na turally imbibed many of their tenets, and mixed them up with the pure and sublime Theology of the Jewish creed. In the same cause most probabl originated the various heresies which sprung u in the church most immediately after our Lord's ascension, which, for the most rt, consisted in a confused jumble of Pla tonic and Christian heology, so unintelligibly united, that it is matter of surprise how they could have spread so rapidly, and col lected so many adherents. Against these heresies, however, which had already ap ared in the time of the Evangelist, and of the in crease of whic he was rhaps divinely forewarned, as well as to rectify the errors of e Jewish converts, who had in general cherished the notions of Philo, St. J ohn's preface seems to have been especially directed. On this subject the student is referred to Horne's Introd. Vol. Iv.p. 317. Sqq. It will be advisable, how ever, to advert to the errors of modern Socinians, and to their futile endeavours to explain away the strong expressions of St. John in regard to the divinity of Christ.
