Book The Criterion of Scientific Truth

Download or read book The Criterion of Scientific Truth written by George Shann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Criterion of Scientific Truth Section I. deals historically with the criterion of truth formulated, or implicit in various systems of philosophy before the middle of the eighteenth century. Section II. shows from the history of modern science that there is a single definite criterion which has been continuously employed for testing scientific truth. This criterion may be expressed as follows:- When a logical arrangement of a whole class of reminiscences affords a mental picture of relationship among them, clearer, more direct, and better adapted for complete mental comprehension than any arrangement previously suggested, then that arrangement is accepted as a basis of scientific truth, and the relationship involved therein is held to be a true nexus. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Criteria of Diverse Kinds of Truth as Opposed to Agnosticism: Being a Treatise on Applied Logic The work is expository, and, for the reasons ust hinted at, is not controversial. It is meant for those who wish, for their own satisfaction, to know the foundations on which the truth which they are required to believe rests. It is also hoped that, it being a treatise on what Kant calls Ap plied Logic - which may be made quite as useful as Primary or Formal Logic - it may be used as a text-book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth and Error: Or the Science of Intellection I did not venture to correct Chuar's judgment, but simply sought to discover his method of reasoning. As our conversation proceeded he explained to me that the stone could not go far over the canyon, for it was so deep that it would make the stone fall before reaching the Opposite bank; and he explained to me with great care that the hollow or empty space pulled the stone down. He discoursed on this point at length, and illustrated it in many ways: If you stand on the edge of the cliff you are likely to fall; the hollow pulls you down, so that you are compelled to brace yourself against the force and lean back. Any one can make such an experiment and see that the void pulls him down. If you climb a tree the higher you reach the harder the pull; if you are at the very top of a tall pine you must cling with your might lest the void below pull you off.
