Book excerpt: The past several years have seen the creation and extension of a very conclusive theory of statistics and probability. Many of the research workers who have been concerned with both probability and statistics felt the need for meetings that provide an opportunity for personal con tacts among scholars whose fields of specialization cover broad spectra in both statistics and probability: to discuss major open problems and new solutions, and to provide encouragement for further research through the lectures of carefully selected scholars, moreover to introduce to younger colleagues the latest research techniques and thus to stimulate their interest in research. To meet these goals, the series of Pannonian Symposia on Mathematical Statistics was organized, beginning in the year 1979: the first, second and fourth one in Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Burgenland, Austria, the third and fifth in Visegrad, Hungary. The Sixth Pannonian Symposium was held in Bad Tatzmannsdorf again, in the time between 14 and 20 September 1986, under the auspices of Dr. Heinz FISCHER, Federal Minister of Science and Research, Theodor KERY, President of the State Government of Burgenland, Dr. Franz SAUERZOPF, Vice-President of the State Govern ment of Burgenland and Dr. Josef SCHMIDL, President of the Austrian Sta tistical Central Office. The members of the Honorary Committee were Pal ERDOS, WXadisXaw ORLICZ, Pal REVESz, Leopold SCHMETTERER and Istvan VINCZE; those of the Organizing Committee were Wilfried GROSSMANN (Uni versity of Vienna), Franz KONECNY (University of Agriculture of Vienna) and, as the chairman, Wolfgang WERTZ (Technical University of Vienna).

His research areas include nonparametric statistics, order statistics, limit theory under mixing, time series, splines, tests of normality, generalized inverses of matrices and related topics, stochastic processes, statistics of directional data, random sets, and fuzzy sets and fuzzy measures. His fundamental contributions in developing new rank-based methods and precise evaluation of the standard procedures, asymptotic expansions of distributions of rank statistics, as well as large deviation results concerning them, span such areas as analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, multivariate analysis, and time series, to mention a few. His in-depth analysis has resulted in pioneering research contributions to prominent journals that have substantial impact on current research. This book together with the other two volumes (Volume 1: Nonparametric Methods in Statistics and Related Topics; Volume 3: Time Series, Fuzzy Analysis and Miscellaneous Topics), are a concerted effort to make his research works easily available to the research community. The sheer volume of the research output by him and his collaborators, coupled with the broad spectrum of the subject matters investigated, and the great number of outlets where the papers were published, attach special significance in making these works easily accessible. The papers selected for inclusion in this work have been classified into three volumes each consisting of several parts. All three volumes carry a final part consisting of the contents of the other two, as well as the complete list of Professor Puri'spublications.

The material is selected towards presenting characteristic properties, or characterizations, of the normal distribution. There are many such properties and there are numerous rel evant works in the literature. In this book special attention is given to characterizations generated by the so called Maxwell's Theorem of statistical mechanics, which is stated in the introduction as Theorem 0.0.1. These characterizations are of interest both intrin sically, and as techniques that are worth being aware of. The book may also serve as a good introduction to diverse analytic methods of probability theory. We use characteristic functions, tail estimates, and occasionally dive into complex analysis. In the book we also show how the characteristic properties can be used to prove important results about the Gaussian processes and the abstract Gaussian vectors. For instance, in Section 5.4 we present Fernique's beautiful proofs of the zero-one law and of the integrability of abstract Gaussian vectors. The central limit theorem is obtained via characterizations in Section 7.3.
