Book excerpt: This publication is concerned with the industrial defense of facilities within the communications industry, particularly those which are vital to industrial mobilization. It supersedes the material contained in 'Standards for Plant Protection, ' Department of Defense, 1 June 1952, insofar as the communications industry is concerned. These Criteria have been developed jointly by representatives of the Department of Defense and representatives of the communications industry and are specially tailored to be used for that portion of the communications industry which comes under the provisions of the Armed Forces Industrial Defense Regulation, dated September 1960, or revisions thereof. The application of these Criteria by industry is desirable. These Criteria are intended as material for the guidance of both government representatives and company management in appraising the status of security of key communications facilities.

Book excerpt: The area of social media use is relatively new, and its use within the Defense Industrial Base is still in its infancy. While federal standards and initiatives are forcing the defense sector to use social media, the defense sector has been slow to adapt. Outdated legislation coupled with the government's inability to respond to rapid technological change enhances the attack landscape. Attackers are quick to respond, creating more sophisticated methods to assault the sector by using tactics such as social engineering, phishing, malware, and advanced persistent threats. Social media is changing the method in which information is conveyed, disseminated, and understood. The ability to use social media is a "deal-breaker" of sorts; employees want the ability to log on, review, and respond to social media sites and posts. The defense employee is no different, yet this presents an almost counter-intuitive response from the department. If information is improperly shared or mishandled from a defense standpoint, not only is the monetary cost high, but the security of a nation could be at risk. This paper reviews several global security breaches caused by the use of social media. Education and training on the use of social media as well as acceptable use policies are recommended. It was determined that further research should be conducted to determine what steps should be taken in providing information in public forums.
