L’illuminismo, lo stato liberale, la libertà di coscienza, I diritti civili, l’autodeterminazione dell’individuo hanno incontrato nella chiesa un implacabile avversario. Ma se la modernità è l’erede secolarizzato della religione cristiana, come spiegare quel conflitto? In che cosa consiste la sfida reciproca fra modernità e cristianesimo? Ora che l’attuale epoca post-secolare sembra rimettere in discussione il rapido esaurirsi della religione, è necessario ritornare a riflettere sull’irrisolto problema della trascendenza e sulla sua affrettata rimozione.

La prima parte della raccolta esamina il rapporto dell’Io col mondo esterno, alla luce dei sempre più evidenti problemi di spersonalizzazione del soggetto umano ai danni della piena consapevolezza della propria responsabilità esistenziale. Politica, famiglia, morte e sacralità sono i miti sfatati in questa sezione, analizzati e ricomposti alla luce di una generale ricostruzione della storia dell’autoreferenzialità individuale. Non esiste un rapporto standard tra coscienza dell’Uno e corporeità fisica, in quanto il corpo umano è esso stesso mondo esterno; mondo esterno e sconosciuto in gran parte è l’universo sensoriale elaborato dal cervello, e ancora alieno è il significato ultimo del sistema cosmico concepito dal Pensiero. All’uomo non resta che un perenne, precario equilibrio tra esistenza e nulla, che è all’origine anche dell’assurdo a cui sempre più spesso si riduce una vita condotta in totale assenza di certezze e coordinate. La seconda parte del trattato è di matrice più specificatamente religioso/cristiana. Si rielabora la figura del Dio ebraico della Genesi, e si rivisita il processo creativo quale strumento di estrazione del mondo dalle nebbie dell’indistinto. Dio non è un principio ideale di perfezione, bene, infallibile legislazione; esso è il demiurgo appena uscito dal nulla universale, il Pensiero primo e appena corrotto dall’imperfezione dell’increato. Ogni uomo, in quanto creatura finita e impelagata in un sistema di frammentazioni cognitive, è direttamente responsabile della morte del “suo” principio divino, e della sua occasionale, parziale resurrezione. La terza e ultima parte si focalizza sulle prospettive future di un’umanità prevalentemente consacrata al caos e alla flagellazione psichica. Si cercano di individuare le vie d’uscita di un popolo in perenne ricerca di un senso, e si smentisce l’esistenza di un progresso storico e morale che ci avvicina a una perfezione etica soltanto immaginaria. La nascita di una Religione Universale è auspicata come controparte risolutiva dei danni delle religioni storiche; la morte è finalmente vista come “correzione” del danno esistenziale, e l’attuale preponderanza del virtuale nella quotidianità annuncia una sempre minor presa dell’elemento “concreto” nelle categorie fondanti il panorama epistemico delle future generazioni. Si prospetta un Cristianesimo nuovo, svincolato dalle superstizioni che l’hanno finora legato alle esigenze di uno specifico popolo, di una grossolana politica, di un miscuglio di coordinate storiche e culturali già superate nel giro di qualche decennio. La nuova religione è oltre il tempo, oltre la morte, e per questo anche oltre ogni immaginabile attaccamento alla vita psichica.

Its simple goal is to introduce agape into the vocabulary of sociological analysis by demonstrating its potential to demarcate and to interpret social phenomena. Love-agape is presented as a critical concept. On the one hand, love-agape denounces the risks linked to the needs of closed groups, often absolutist and fundamentalist. On the other hand, it represents a concrete reality, lying at the root of a particular type of sociality. A sociality that, rather unconventionally, recognizes differences and distances, but also characterizes their condition of being together, as community founded on the recognition and respect of subjectivity.

Book excerpt: In Socialism of Fools, Michele Battini focuses on the critical moment during the Enlightenment in which anti-Jewish stereotypes morphed into a sophisticated, modern social anti-Semitism. He recovers the potent anti-Jewish, anticapitalist propaganda that cemented the idea of a Jewish conspiracy in the European mind and connects it to the atrocities that characterized the Jewish experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Beginning in the eighteenth century, counter-Enlightenment intellectuals and intransigent Catholic writers singled out Jews for conspiring to exploit self-sustaining markets and the liberal state. These ideas spread among socialist and labor movements in the nineteenth century and intensified during the Long Depression of the 1870s. Anti-Jewish anticapitalism then migrated to the Habsburg Empire with the Christian Social Party; to Germany with the Anti-Semitic Leagues; to France with the nationalist movements; and to Italy, where Revolutionary Syndicalists made anti-Jewish anticapitalism the basis of an alliance with the nationalists. Exemplified best in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the infamous document that "leaked" Jewish plans to conquer the world, the Jewish-conspiracy myth inverts reality and creates a perverse relationship to historical and judicial truth. Isolating the intellectual roots of this phenomenon and its contemporary resonances, Battini shows us why, so many decades after the Holocaust, Jewish people continue to be a powerful political target.
