Book Career Crisis in the School Superintendency

Download or read book Career Crisis in the School Superintendency written by Bruce S. Cooper and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2000 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, validated survey instrument, SPEAR (Superintendents' Professional Expectations and Advancement Review), asked top executives about their opinions, skills, perceptions on a range of career concerns, and future interests. Of the nation's 13,500 school superintendents, a random sample of 2,979 was selected, segmented by district size. The overall finding is that superintendents are proud and satisfied with their own accomplishments, but greatly concerned about the prospect of finding talented leaders to take their places. Some of the questions explored in the survey include the following: Is there a crisis in attracting educators into the profession? How satisfied are superintendents with their careers? How mobile are superintendents? What are their professional concerns? What personal concerns and motives do they express? and What skills do they bring to the job? The report provides a brief description of its findings and recommendations as well. The appendix contains the SPEAR questionnaire. (Contains 21 references.) (DFR)

Book Exploring the Role of the School Superintendent in Crisis Management

Download or read book Exploring the Role of the School Superintendent in Crisis Management written by Giovanni Virgiglio (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the likelihood and probability of school districts encountering major crises remain unknown, superintendents need to anticipate and prepare for such events that have the potential to threaten their organization. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore the behaviors and actions of New York State public school superintendents before, during, and after varying crises within their school districts. The research will analyze superintendents' behaviors and actions using Pearson and Mitroff's (1993) five-stage theoretical framework for crisis management and how those behaviors and actions promote organizational resilience. One-on-one interviews were conducted with twelve superintendents of school districts throughout New York State. All participants experienced and led their school district through high-profile crises during their tenure. The research sought to determine what behaviors and actions superintendents took when faced with a crisis and which of those behaviors and actions were perceived to be most effective in promoting organizational resilience. Further, data were collected and analyzed to determine if and how superintendents' behaviors and actions varied with internal and external stakeholder groups when managing a crisis. The overall findings indicated that many of the behaviors and actions superintendents had taken to lead their school districts through a crisis were similar, including 1) crisis detection, planning, and preparation; 2) crisis containment and limitation; and 3) crisis recovery and learning. Superintendents identified communication as a central theme when engaging stakeholders inside and outside the organization. Superintendents' engagement with stakeholder groups varied by 1) crisis communication strategies; 2) crisis communication delivery; and 3) school board engagement. Although there was no clear consensus among the participants as to what behaviors and actions were perceived to have promoted organizational resilience, most superintendents discussed post-crisis recovery, including 1) community building; and 2) community healing. Several recommendations came from this research but none more critical than the need to amend the existing New York State Education Law relative to school safety. Such amendments should promote post-crisis reflection and action by expanding the role of the district-wide school safety team and charging safety teams to develop comprehensive crisis plans by conducting tabletop exercises to prepare for unanticipated crises that may impact school districts. Moreover, given the increasing threats crises pose to schools, it is clear school districts require the assistance of professional associations to provide professional development for district leaders on how to assess and strengthen the resiliency of their organization. Recommendations for future research are also offered.

Download or read book The Dark Side of Educational Leadership written by Walter S. Polka and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A valuable resource to institutions of higher education and various state and national superintendent organizations and agencies, The Dark Side of Educational Leadership provides valuable insights into specific resiliency behaviors that contribute to superintendents' abilities to overcome the trauma associated with being a professional victim. Specifically illuminating those issues that contribute most often to the victimization of superintendents, well-researched chapters demonstrate strategies employed by superintendents to prevent similar issues from causing additional pain. Polka and Litchka identify resiliency factors of most significance to superintendents in dealing with the professional victim syndrome, helping superintendents to better prepare for the professional victim syndrome during their professional career.

Book Schools in Crisis

  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book Schools in Crisis written by Carl Sommer and published by Advance Publishing, Incorporated. This book was released on 1984 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The national educational crisis can be solved by practical yet inexpensive methods, according to Carl Sommer. Shortly after becoming a high school teacher, he found serious limitations with the education his students received. He probed into the reasons why some schools were successful, even among traditionally low-achieving children, while so many others failed to provide students with a proper education. He interviewed parents, students, teachers, assistant principals, and principals. For 10 years he researched to find solutions for the problems facing American education. One basic reason for the massive educational decline, Sommer believes, is that many administrators have embraced progressive policies, such as: not encouraging reasonable educational standards for both students and teachers, lack of concern over students' deficiency in the basics, and permitting unqualified children to advance automatically from grade to grade.

Book Leading Schools During Crisis

Download or read book Leading Schools During Crisis written by Matthew J. Pepper and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2010-01-16 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School leadership is synonymous with challenge. However, some school leaders face true crises - situations threatening the continuing existence of their school. Leading Schools During Crisis analyzes leadership and behaviors of principals in these extraordinary circumstances. A simultaneously scholarly and practice-oriented book, Leading Schools During Crisis proposes the first school-specific model of defining and analyzing crises. Through authentic case studies, Leading Schools During Crisis offers a detailed theoretical and practical analysis of each crisis and the lessons from it for all school leaders. Highlights of the twelve case studies include: P.S. 234, Manhattan. At nine a.m. on September 11, 2001, the thirty-seven teachers and 650 elementary students of P.S. 234 were twelve hundred feet from Ground Zero. Principal Anna Switzer states, '[r]ight when the second plane crashed_that's when we knew that it wasn't an accident.' George Washington Carver H.S., New Orleans, Louisiana. Principal Vanessa Eugene believed Katrina would be another chapter in New Orleans' long history of near-miss hurricanes. Carver's campus was soon under ten feet of water. Sobrante Park E.S., Oakland, California. Like many schools, Sobrante Park only slowly realized the paradigm shift associated with the No Child Left Behind Act_until the fifth year of failing to make Adequate Yearly Progress. 'What do you do when all the data is bad?' asked Principal Marco Franco. Platte Canyon H.S, Bailey, Colorado. Principal Brian Krause was approached by a frantic student who reported: ''[T]here's a guy in the English classroom with a gun' . . . . I remember thinking, okay, he said guy. He didn't say student or kid or Johnny.' Other case studies include the challenges inherent in starting charter schools, discovery of systemic and deliberate grade fraud, rezoning of 95 percent of a elementary school's student population, and leading a school populated by changing_and often contentious_refugee groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coping with Educational Crises: Approaches from School Leaders Who Did It provides readers with perspectives and research-based strategies regarding the leadership approaches employed by school district administrators at all levels of organizational responsibility including superintendents of schools; assistant superintendents; program directors and coordinators; principals; assistant principals; and teacher leaders to confront unexpected major crises in school operations such as that created by the COVID-19 global pandemic. This book consists of eight chapters written by practicing administrators, leadership researchers, and experienced educators who present their analyses and insights about managing the people, things, and ideas of educational organizations during crisis situations. Coping with Educational Crises also provides recommendations to current and future school leaders who may face similar crises during their careers. Additionally, the editors and contributing authors offer sage advice to educational policymakers, school administrators, parents, and community leaders to recognize the collateral opportunities associated with any crisis including reforms to the pre-crisis traditional educational system since some of its key foundations, procedures, and expectations may have been significantly changed forever.

Book School Tax Elections

  • Author : Don E. Lifto

Download or read book School Tax Elections written by Don E. Lifto and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether it is requests for bricks and mortar or more operating money, each election type and context is unique with no guarantee that a set of campaign strategies successful in one district will not fail in another community. If successful campaigns were not such a delicate balance of science and art, the key to success would have long since been discovered, resulting in significantly more school districts winning at the ballot box. As members of the baby-boom generation collectively watch their last child receive a diploma from our nation's public schools, passing school tax elections is going to be even more difficult, promising tougher battles with the electorate and tighter margins between success and failure. School Tax Elections represents a marriage of research and successful practice, presenting a comprehensive planning model for school leaders preparing for and conducting school tax elections. Information presented emphasizes systems and strategies rather than specific campaign tactics, allowing school leaders to elevate their thinking to a more comprehensive and long-range vision of election planning. The authors provide school leaders with important resources to guide their planning and execution of school tax elections.

Book Superintendent Crisis Leadership During the Development of the COVID 19 Reopening Plans

Download or read book Superintendent Crisis Leadership During the Development of the COVID 19 Reopening Plans written by David S. Marr and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unanticipated extended school closures in the Spring of 2020 across New York State (NYS) due to the COVID-19 global health crisis will likely have significant impacts on the students who experienced them (Aldeman, 2021; Bernstein et al., 2020). Superintendents and the impact they have on student outcomes is a well-studied topic (Marzano et al., 2005). How those leaders performed the executive tasks of crisis management (Boin et al., 2013) during the development of reopening plans (NYSED, 2020) is demonstrative of their crisis leadership. The exhibition of that leadership also impacts the resilience of the organization (Barasa et al., 2018). The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the crisis leadership of superintendents from the perspective of Hudson Valley and Capital Region Elementary principals who participated in the development of their school's COVID-19 reopening plan development. This study used Boin et al.'s (2013) 10 Executive Tasks of Crisis Management and Barasa et al.'s (2018) Nine Factors that Influence Organizational Resilience to establish three research questions aimed at understanding the experience of elementary school principals who acted as members of their superintendent's crisis leadership team. The findings that resulted from this study indicate that superintendents who effectively performed the executive tasks of crisis management (Boin et al., 2013) also impacted the resilience of their organization (Barasa et al., 2018). Several conclusions and recommendations have resulted from the findings in this study, but possibly the most important is the recommendation that superintendents grow the leadership capacity of actors within their organization, to increase the system's ability to respond to challenge and change.

Book Exploring the Role of Superintendent Leadership in Managing the COVID 19 Crisis

Download or read book Exploring the Role of Superintendent Leadership in Managing the COVID 19 Crisis written by Jennifer L. Steimle and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature over the past several decades offers a plethora of information regarding crisis management in the private sector (Burnett, 1998; Fink, 1986; Coombs, 2007; Pauchant & Mitroff, 1992; Pearson & Clair, 1998; Pearson & Mitroff, 1993). Conversely, there is little research regarding crisis management in a school setting (Gainey, 2009; Smith & Riley, 2012). Leadership in a school setting is often discussed in terms of student achievement (Fullan, 2014; Marzano & DuFour, 2011; Waters & Marzano, 2006; Waters, Marzano & McNulty, 2003) or through change initiatives (Bennis, 2009; Boleman & Deal, 2006). School district leaders need to have a more diverse skill set and management techniques specific to the challenges that a crisis presents. The purpose of this qualitative comparative case study is to explore the crisis leadership actions of Superintendents while managing the COVID-19 pandemic. Four key members of four school districts were interviewed to capture the Superintendent's perceived actions while managing a crisis. The Superintendent, a building principal, the teachers' union president, and the board of education president were interviewed using Fink's (1986) Four-Stage Framework for Crisis Management. Data was collected using an interview process and hand-coded to identify themes. The key findings for this study included actions most valued by school district leaders in relation to how the Superintendent addressed the COVID-19 crisis. The actions identified included a portrayal of consistent decision-making, consistent communications, and the ability to collaborate. Twelve of twelve participants noted the high value of confidence in decision-making and providing consistent communications. All of the districts studied continued to emphasize the importance of collaboration with all stakeholders, including the importance of collaboration with the regional BOCES groups and regular Superintendent meetings. Participants from all four school districts discussed the importance of these actions to effectively and successfully address the challenges of the ongoing pandemic.

Book Issues of Educational Leadership

Download or read book Issues of Educational Leadership written by Fern Aefsky and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational leaders must be prepared to lead during crisis. Leadership has been challenged with multiple crisis in recent years, including issues of school safety, school shootings, medical crises such as SARs, HINI, and the ongoing pandemic. While each of these situations has resulted in multiple plans of actions, none has impacted our society as the current pandemic (COVID19) has, in terms of immediacy of needs and actions. School and district leaders are in charge of managing many stakeholders, circumstances and have the authority and responsibility to lead with ethical behavior (Al Habusi, Ismail & Omar, 2018). Integrity, resilience, fairness help guide the components of ethical leadership that leaders need to model, communicate, and use as a framework for implementing and sustaining change in organizations (Hegarty & Moccia, 2018). This book is targeted for leaders of educational systems, school buildings and those leaders of organizations that are connected in some way to educational systems and schools at all levels. The educational issues raised by the COVID pandemic, began in March 2020. The leadership needs identified throughout this crisis exemplifies many of the issues of crisis management, that is applicable to other issues, such as school violence, school safety, accidents and deaths that occur in every district.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the changing role of the superintendent who now must lead with new skills in a time when the landscape of communities is shifting necessitating the mobilization of people through advocacy and activism alongside new partnerships with businesses, local governmental agencies, and community organizations. To lead districts, superintendents must ask new questions about current school structures while navigating changes in local, state, and federal education policies to ensure practices are aligned to meet the needs of all children. Key questions throughout the book help leaders create coherence in a system of change while leading the learning for members in the district and developing effective governance structures to empower leaders in making strategic decisions. Superintendents must focus efforts on leading systems to think through the world of information and digital access, so students can learn for tomorrow and to leverage social media to brand and support system-wide transformations. The frenetic work, role, and responsibilities of the superintendent requires personal and professional balance to be effective in leading districts and communities.

Book The Normal School Crisis Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Normal School Crisis Classic Reprint written by Orson Leroy Manchester and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Normal School Crisis Four years ago I tried to show this Council that the humiliation of the Illinois Normal School had begun twenty years before. It was no accident that in the eighties and in the nineties the professors in our normal schools were the educational leaders of Illinois. Two thousand dollars was not a high salary but it was more than was paid on the average to superintendents of our 42 largest cities, excepting Chicago, and as much as was paid to heads of departments at the University of Illinois. As one looks back today he wonders whether upon this salary question we normal school people were asleep during the twenty years preceding the outbreak of the European War. Slowly prices rose, until by 1913 they were 60 per cent higher than. In 1896 and 40 per cent higher than the average level of the nineties. With the prices of commodities rose the salaries of public school teachers and of pro fessors at the State University. Between 1897 and 1916 in three classes of our largest cities - excepting Chicago - salary increases averaged, for superintendents 85, 45, and 74 per cent respectively, and for high school principals, 82, 66, and 136 per cent, while at the Uni versity of Illinois for heads of departments they more than doubled. During the-same period for a week of service the money wage of the normal school professor increased 16 per cent. Perhaps nobody in tended this humiliation of the normal teacher. A rise of three per cent a year in prices and in superintendents' salaries may have escaped notice. But while the normal school professor's salary in 1897 had exceeded the high school teacher's salary by 31 per cent and the superintendent's salary by 8 per cent, by 1916 the superintendent's pay was 30 per cent and the high school principal's pay 14 per cent above that of the professor. If the twenty years preceding the outbreak of the War form the first period of normal school degradation in Illinois, the briefer time since the outbreak completes a second period.
