This accessibly written introduction examines over two dozen such crises and how the biblical text addresses, reflects, and embodies them. From the ministry of Jesus, to the rise and propagation of the Christian movement, to the epistles of Paul and other leaders, to a vision of God's final cosmic victory, the New Testament books are succinctly introduced in literary, historical, and theological perspective. Designed for optimal classroom use, each chapter offers four primary features: (a) definition and exploration of relevant contextual crises; (b) connections with the biblical writings; (c) primary features of the biblical narrative; and (d) an application section that engages the student directly and invites thoughtful response.

The message is that of victory of Christ and his saintsover the forces of Satan. Christ will be victorious (1:18; 6:2; 11:15; 14:1; 19:16). The saintswill overcome. They will endure (13:10; 14:12), have their robes washed (7:14; 22:14 ASV),have victory over the beast (15:2), and come out of the tribulation (7:14)."The book is designed to encourage Christians to be faithful in the face of all oppositionand persecution, regardless of how terrible the onslaught might be."A summary verse for the book might be Revelation 17:14, "These will make war with theLamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; andthose who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful."

Book excerpt: Chapter 13 of the book of Revelation reveals a world unity unlike any other, a world where peace, security and prosperity are the order of the day. In our times, the news media bombards us with reports of controversy and chaos, terrorism and piracy on the global scale, yet chapter 13 heralds, And all the world wondered after the beast...and they worshiped the beast...and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations...and all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him...and deceiveth them that dwell on the earth. Finally, it seems the world has a leadership they can trust, admire, even worship. How Satan and his cohorts accomplish this feat of deception, and how far his preparations have progressed is the theme of this book, Revelation 13: Satan's Last Victory.

Book The Sibylline Oracles

    Book Details:
  • Author : Milton S. Terry
  • Publisher : Jazzybee Verlag
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 3849621782
  • Pages : 389 pages

Download or read book The Sibylline Oracles written by Milton S. Terry and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive annotation of almost 10.000 words about the oracles in religion * an interactive table-of-contents * perfect formatting for electronic reading devices THE Sibyls occupy a conspicuous place in the traditions and history of ancient Greece and Rome. Their fame was spread abroad long before the beginning of the Christian era. Heraclitus of Ephesus, five centuries before Christ, compared himself to the Sibyl "who, speaking with inspired mouth, without a smile, without ornament, and without perfume, penetrates through centuries by the power of the gods." The ancient traditions vary in reporting the number and the names of these weird prophetesses, and much of what has been handed down to us is legendary. But whatever opinion one may hold respecting the various legends, there can be little doubt that a collection of Sibylline Oracles was at one time preserved at Rome. There are, moreover, various oracles, purporting to have been written by ancient Sibyls, found in the writings of Pausanias, Plutarch, Livy, and in other Greek and Latin authors. Whether any of these citations formed a portion of the Sibylline books once kept in Rome we cannot now determine; but the Roman capitol was destroyed by fire in the time of Sulla (B. C. 84), and again in the time of Vespasian (A. D. 69), and whatever books were at those dates kept therein doubtless perished in the flames. It is said by some of the ancients that a subsequent collection of oracles was made, but, if so, there is now no certainty that any fragments of them remain.

Book A Commentary on the Revelation of John

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New in the Eerdmans Classic Biblical Commentaries collection In this now-classic exposition of Revelation, first published in 1972, George Eldon Ladd offers a clear, engaging, and insightful reading of the Apocalypse that is ideal for the pulpit, classroom, or personal study. In a brief introduction Ladd discusses the subject of authorship, the date and historical setting of Revelation, and the various methods of interpretation (preterist, historical, idealist, and futurist) that have been applied to the book throughout history. He then offers an analytical outline of Revelation’s structure and his verse-by-verse commentary, which reflects a historic premillennial perspective. The entire work is marked by Ladd’s sensitivity to the needs of both scholars and general readers and by his concern for proclaiming the message of Revelation for our time.
