Book Evidence Based Crime Prevention

Download or read book Evidence Based Crime Prevention written by David P. Farrington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime prevention policy and practice is, on the whole, far from objective. Instead of being based on scientific evidence, the crime policy agenda is seemingly driven by political ideology, anecdotal evidence and programme trends. Evidence-Based Crime Prevention seeks to change this by comprehensively and rigorously assessing the existing scientific knowledge on the effectiveness of crime prevention programmes internationally. Reviewing more than 600 scientific evaluations of programmes intended to prevent crime in settings such as families, schools, labour markets and communities, this book grades programmes on their scientific validity using the 'scientific methods scale'. This collection, which brings together contributions from leading researchers in the field of crime prevention, will provide policy-makers, researchers and community leaders with an understandable source of information about what works, what does not work and what is promising in preventing crime.

Book Policing Mental Health

Download or read book Policing Mental Health written by Laura Huey and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief addresses the question of the various ways in which mental health-related issues have become police responsibility. It provides a detailed understanding of the myriad of ways in which police are often called upon to be the primary responder to mental health-related issues, well beyond the standard media images of individuals in extreme crisis. Drawing upon the results of two separate ethnographies of police practices in Canada, this volume examines how public policing has become entangled in cases of persons with mental illness (PMI). It examines two aspects of the police role and mandate that brings police officers into contact with individuals dealing with mental health disorders: public safety, and crime prevention and response. It explores police perceptions towards the roles they play in the lives of PMI, and police demands in these types of calls for service that have transformed aspects of public policing. Appropriate for policing researchers, law enforcement and public policymakers, this book presents the argument that tackling this matter requires knowledge of police involvement in situations with PMI, as well as a set of evidence-based policy options that will not generate additional resource or other strains.

Book excerpt: Blueprints for Violence Prevention In 1996, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV), at the University of Colorado, designed and launched a national violence prevention initiative in the United States to identify violence prevention programs that were effective. [...] These include: • Identifying Risk and Protective Factors: Community needs are identified by assessing risk and protective factors to help focus the interventions; • Selecting Program and Intervention that Work: Local practitioners should develop and implement the most appropriate and effective programs and practices that address the identified risk and protective factors using the evidence base av [...] The process evaluation indicated that: • The Project Steering Committee changed its role during the course of the project, moving from initiation and development of the project to monitoring and sustaining the DVTO system; • The SAP program underwent changes in response to new problems and issues that emerged, such as changes to the relapse prevention program, the continued development of a specia [...] The process evaluation showed that: • participation rates decreased towards the end of the project, mostly due to changes in the administration of the project and the role of the advisory group; • project implementation, community support and participant engagement were achieved, despite high rates of staff turnover; • the project's major strength was its emphasis on culture-based crime prevention [...] The 26 program aims to do this by improving the competency of the child, increasing the effectiveness of the parents, enhancing the bonds and positive experiences associated with the school, and improving communication between the school and home.

Book Smarter Crime Control

Download or read book Smarter Crime Control written by Irvin Waller and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. is the world´s biggest jailor and one of the most affluent murderous countries, and yet its citizens pay more taxes to sustain law and order than their European counterparts. Yet, the U.S. has the most data in the world on the use of incarceration and its failure. Its researchers have identified more projects able to prevent violence than the rest of the world put together. Its legislators have access to pioneering data banks on cost effective ways to use taxes to reduce crime. We are left wondering why we cannot implement measures that we know will work, reduce crime, and cost less for law and order. Smarter Crime Control shows how to use recent knowledge and best practices to reduce the extraordinarily high rates of murder, traffic fatalities, drug overdoses, and incarceration, while avoiding the high taxes paid by families for policing and prisons. Providing detailed examples, Irvin Waller offers specific actions our leaders at all levels can take to reduce violence and lower costs to taxpayers. He focuses on how to retool policing and improve corrections to reduce reoffending and crime, while limiting criminal courts. He also shows how programs and investments in various strategies can help those youth on the path to chronic offending avoid the path all together. Waller shows how to get smart on crime to shift the criminal justice paradigm from the failing, outdated, racially biased, and exorbitant complex today to an effective, modern, fair and lean system for safer communities that spares so many victims from the loss and pain of preventable violence. He makes a compelling case for reinvesting what is currently misspent on reacting to crime into smart ways to prevent crime. Ultimately, he demonstrates to readers the importance of reevaluating our current system and putting into place proven strategies for crime and violence prevention that will keep people out of jail and make our streets and communities safer for everyone.
