Book excerpt: One of Australia's best loved writers, William McInnes makes us laugh, cry and grab life with both hands. Chris Andersen loves cricket. He may not be a legend like Bradman or Boonie, but in the Yarraville West Fourths, Chris Andersen is king. He is the captain, the coach, the manager and, thankfully, a player. They are getting hard to find, players. Every Saturday in summer Chris ropes together a motley team of men and a couple of boys to turn up in their cricket whites to try and win a game. Everyone has a different reason for being there: to hear the music from a nearby house, a block out the memories of another place, to be entertained, to please their dad, or just to have a go. And everyone has a story to tell. 'Marvellous reading' - Woman's Day 'Entertaining' - West Australian 'A book about a lot more than cricket... And even though you laugh out loud, you recognise something real' - The Age 'Big-hearted novel with character, leaving the reader with the urge to stand up and cheer' - Sunday Telegraph 'An affectionate, gentle and touching tribute to cricket and blokes who play it for love, not money' - Adelaide Advertiser

Book Cricketing Lives

Download or read book Cricketing Lives written by Richard H. Thomas and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As famous for its complicated rules as it is for its contentious (and lengthy) matches, cricket is the quintessentially English sport. Or is it? From cricket in literature to sticky wickets, Cricketing Lives is a paean to the quirky characters and global phenomenon that are cricket. Cricket is defined by the characters who have played it, watched it, reported it, ruled upon it, ruined it, and rejoiced in it. Humorous and deeply affectionate, Cricketing Lives tells the story of the world’s greatest and most incomprehensible game through those who have shaped it, from the rustic contests of eighteenth-century England to the spectacle of the Indian Premier League. It’s about W. G. Grace and his eye to his wallet; the invincible Viv Richards; and Sarah Taylor, “the best wicketkeeper in the world.” Richard H. Thomas steers a course through the despair of war, tactical controversies, and internecine politics, to reveal how cricket has always warmed our hearts as nothing else can.

Book excerpt: Chronicling the Indian Premier League (IPL), India’s first sports league and the most controversial ever, this book explores the intricacies of the business and the acceptability of the IPL to take a closer look at the various scams that have plagued it. It is a blow-by-blow description of the highs, lows, and future of the IPL that has, possibly, redefined the way the rest of the world perceives India. It analyses what the league got right and what it has got wrong and why. And, what the IPL and its owner/promoter—the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)—could have done to sell the sport and build on the popularity of cricket in India, but didn’t. Analysing the spot-fixing scandal, the conflict of interest controversy, the specific issues concerning the teams, the complicated interplay between the BCCI and the IPL, this thought-provoking work brings to light many untold stories of cricket in India.

Book The Black White Story

Download or read book The Black White Story written by Wim Van der Berg and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defining moment in the history of Natal and Sharks rugby was in 1990 when they won the Currie Cup for the first time, fittingly in the centenary year of the Natal Rugby Union. That was when they really came of age and became a confident outfit, setting the tone for the future. And in the last 25 years the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union, as it is now known, has indeed gone from strength to strength. Wim van der Berg's history of the Union takes us back to its modest beginnings in 1890 and traces the story of its provincial and international ventures, bringing us right up to 2014 - which was a year of mixed fortunes for the Sharks rugby side. He chronicles the ups and downs of a developing union, its clubs and schools sides and, more recently, its development programmes. Rich in anecdotes about the many colourful characters who made the history, and continue to do so today, this book, The Black & White Story, captures the undying spirit and passion of all who were, and are today, involved in the Union's many and varied activities. For the history of the KZNRU is indeed about its people - players, coaches, administrators and supporters - whose commitment to the Union has made it what it is today: one of the most successful and illustrious brands in international sport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pakistan Super League (PSL) is a franchise-based professional Twenty20 cricket league started by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in February 2016. As the name suggests, the tournament is played in Pakistan with franchise teams representing different cities. Initially, there were five franchises, Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi, and Quetta Gladiators, but in 2018, a sixth team, Multan Sultans, was added. Each team is allowed to have a maximum of 21 players, which includes a combination of local and foreign players. The tournament has rapidly gained popularity and has attracted many high-profile international players such as Chris Gayle, Shane Watson, Kevin Pietersen, and Darren Sammy. The league takes place annually, usually in February and March, and comprises of a double round-robin format, in which each team plays against each other twice before four teams advance to the playoffs. The playoffs consist of two semi-finals before the final, which takes place at the National Stadium in Karachi. The PSL has been beneficial for the development of cricket in Pakistan and has significantly boosted the country's image on the international cricketing stage.
