Book Jamaican Creole Proverbs

Download or read book Jamaican Creole Proverbs written by Aleksandra R. Knapik and published by Æ Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamaican Creole, like many other contact languages, has taken its ultimate shape through the course of multi-lingual and multi-cultural influences. From the perspective of contact linguistics , this meticulous study examines Jamaican Creole proverbs in a corpus of over 1090 recorded sayings; it presents a framework of cultural changes in Jamaica accompanied by corresponding linguistic changes in its creole. The analysis clearly demonstrates that despite three centuries of extreme dominance by the British empire, Jamaicans successfully preserved the traditions of their own ancestors. Not only that. The poly-layered stimulus of various factors: geographic, cultural and, most prominently, linguistic, helped create a unique phenomenon – Jamaican creole culture. The vibrant life of the Jamaican people and their African background is best encapsulated in their proverbs, proverbs which constitute generations of wisdom passed from the 16th century and on. John R. Rickford, J.E. Wallace Sterling Professor of Linguistics and the Humanities, Stanford University The research theme of the very publication entitled Jamaican Proverbs fromthe Perspective of Contact Linguistics is a successful analysis of both linguistic and cultural contacts between English and African cultures that have been shaping the vernacular language of Jamaica. The study material consists of 1092 proverbs, all of which can be regarded as a first-hand record of sociolinguistic events that have had important influence upon the formation of the Jamaican creole language and its registers. Dr. Knapik proves beyond any reasonable doubt that the Jamaican linguistic and cultural world is a great example of a thriving microcosm which continues to incorporate various elements and can also very well serve as the basis for future research on patterns of language and culture development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Following the Red Bird, Kate Rademacher describes how she came to embrace a relationship with God after maintaining a pick-and-choose approach to spirituality for many years. Raised in a staunchly secular, liberal community, Christianity was never a path she had seriously considered. Married to a devout Buddhist, Rademacher was sitting on a cushion at her husband's meditation center one day when Jesus appeared unexpectedly in her consciousness and called her to follow him. She was baptized a year later to the day. Part memoir and part meditation on Christian teachings, Following the Red Bird: First Steps into a Life of Faith explores not only the why of Christianity, but also the how. How do we learn to listen for God's voice? How do we apply Christian teachings to everyday life? How do we develop and sustain a relationship with Jesus? The image from the title becomes a metaphor for the ways Rademacher slowly discovers answers to these questions as she stumbles into a new life in the church. Both the searcher and the long-time believer will benefit from her experience and insight.

Book Creoles of Sierra Leone Proverbs Parables Wise Sayings

Download or read book Creoles of Sierra Leone Proverbs Parables Wise Sayings written by Eyamidé E. Lewis-Coker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proverbs, parables, and wise sayings are meaningful short sayings or vehicles through which morals are transmitted to adults, youths, and children. They are life experiences that Africans utilized to understand their past and present lives. These means of expressions are vital to the African culture as they transmit wisdom, truth, morals, and lessons that convey traditional views passed down from generation to generation. Africans and mostly older Africans communicate to adults, adolescences, and children by means of proverbs, parables, and wise sayingstransmitting messages, imparting warnings, solving problems, influencing behaviors, helping to avoid unwanted outcomes, and shaping or molding, especially the children as they journey through life. Proverbs, parables, and wise sayings are the instinctive or spontaneous methods of learning anytime and anywhere through conversations in an African community. As the conversations linger, they are revitalized by these short sayings. These modes keep the African children active and interested in the world around them, as well as their own development. These short sayings, in simple terms, are the daughters of daily-life experiences. They are not explained after they have been expressed; instead, adults, youths, and children used them to improve their communication and listening skills, develop creative imaginative and thinking skills, understand the meaning of life, and be familiar with the element of each proverb that was transmitted. Proverbs, parables, and wise sayings are the oral literature of the Creoles or Krios of Sierra Leone. Each proverb is understood when expressed in ordinary conversation. The role and importance of proverbs, parables, and wise sayings in conversations of each ethnic group of Sierra Leone provide a colorful, vibrant, and poetic picture of the African culture and its characteristics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gombo Zhebes: Little Dictionary of Creole Proverbs, Selected From Six Creole DialectsNevertheless all which I have utilized exhibit the peculiarities of the vernacular sufficiently to justify their presence. While some of these proverbs are witty enough to call a smile to the most serious lips, many others must, no doubt, seem vapid. Enigmatic, or even meaningless. But a large majority of negro sayings depend altogether upon application for their color or their effectiveness; they possess a chameleon power of changing hue according to the manner in which they are placed. (see for examples: Prov. 161, 251, or Every saying of this kind is susceptible of numerous applications; and the art of applying one proverb to many different situations is one in which the negro has no rival - not even among the Arabs them selves, whose use of such folklore has been so admirably illustrated by Carlo Landberg.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
