Book Creep as a Surface Dependent Phenomenon

Download or read book Creep as a Surface Dependent Phenomenon written by Milton R. Pickus and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative creep tests have been described for single crystal and polycrystalline zinc, with and without the presence of a surface layer containing electrodeposited copper. For polycrystalline zinc, neither the creep rate at constant temperature and load, nor the temperature dependence of the creep rate at constant load was affected by the presence of copper in the surface layer. The single crystals, on the other hand, showed a marked increase in the resistance to creep as a result of the electrodeposited copper layer. The copper also caused an increase in the temperature dependence of the creep rate, suggesting that a higher activation energy is required to generate dislocations when copper is present in the surface layer. A study was made of the steady state creep behavior of 'A' nickel in different environments and surface conditions. It was found that resistance to high temperature creep was much greater in air than in either purified hydrogen or nitrogen. The presence of tungsten in the surface layer did not affect the resistance to creep. In regard to the temperature dependence of steady state creep, 'A' nickel was found to be insensitive to conditions at the surface. An important conclusion resulting from this work is the fact that under certain conditions, creep is a surface dependent phenomenon.

Book Fundamental Phenomena in the Materials Sciences

Download or read book Fundamental Phenomena in the Materials Sciences written by L. J. Bonis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores in detail the four interrelated branches of the study of surface phenomena-surface thermodynamics, nucleation, diffusion, and fine-particles technology-providing an unusual and comprehensive body of knowledge that will be of interest and practical value to both materials researchers and practising engineers. The growing awareness-since the advent of the space age-among solid-state physicists, metallurgists, ceramists, chemical engineers, and mechanical engineers of the need for a broad interdisciplinary under standing of the fundamental phenomena common to all matedals has led in recent years to the development of a new field of scientific investigation, Materials Science. To help promote interest in and con tributions to this new technology, annual symposia on "Fundamental Phenomena in the Materials Sciences" have been organized by the Ilikon Corporation. The first symposium, reported in Volume 1 of this series, was held in Boston, Massachusetts, on February 1 and 2, 1963; sintering and plastic deformation were the main topics of discussion. The second meeting, also held in Boston, on January 27 and 28, 1964, was exclusively concerned with the general interdisciplinary problems related to surface phenomena, that is, all of those physical and chemical areas that are pertinent to the surface of a solid, or to the interface between a solid and a gas, a solid and a liquid, or a solid and a solid.
