Book excerpt: The first IUTAM Symposium on Creep in Structures was held in Stanford, Cal. 1960 (Proceedings, ed. N. J. HOFF, Springer-Verlag 1962). That meeting reflected an intense research activity in the field of structural creep, and many important results were pre sented. In spite of this progress design rules for high temperature equipment are still often inadequate. Design against creep deformation and creep rupture is all too often based only oli experience and intuition. With technological processes moving into ever higher temperature regions the effects of creep must be given steadily increasing attention. The IUTAM Bureau in 1967 decided to arrange a Second Symposium on Creep in Structures, to be held in Gothenburg under the chairmanship of F. K. G. ODQVIST. This meeting was to take stock of the progress made in the ten years since the first symposium. Notable advances in the establishment of a sound phenomenological theory, refined experimental techniques and several new methods of structural analysis of shells in the creep range gave impetus to this second symposium. Problems of rupture and stability under complex loads had been studied and many new results in these fields were presented and discussed. Attendance was strictly limited to persons active in the field covered by the symposium. Financial support was generously provided by IUTAM, Chalmers University, the Swedish Board for Technical Develonment and four Swedish industrial companies (ASEA, Sand mens Jernverk, Saab-Scania, Volvo).

Book excerpt: At the suggestion of the USSR National Committee of Theo retical and Applied Mechanios the International Union of Theo retical and Applied Meohanics made a deoision to organize the Second IUTAM Symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition in No vosibirsk. Professor Yanenko was entrusted to be the chairman of the scientific committee. It was proposed that about 100 scientists would participate in the Symposium and that 60 lectures and invited lectures would be delivered; as for the theme of the Symposium, it was devoted to experimental and theoretical stu dies of laminar-turbulent transition in fluids and gases, i.e. the physical problems of transition and mathematical modeling in shear flows. It was planned to lay a special emphasis on fundamental mechanisms of the transition process. The scienti fio committee approved of the scope of the Symposium having considered the changes in the directions of the stUdies which took place since the First Symposium. For example, there was singled out the problem of transformation of external distur bances into eigenoscillations of shear flows, i.e. the recep tivity problem which was only slightly touched upon at the First Symposium. A new section appeared devoted to the inter relation of the flow separation phenomenon and its stability. It was planned to focus the attention on the secondary instability at transition to turbulence at the non-linear stage of the flow breakdown as well as on the loss of stability and the disturbances development in 3-D flows.

Book excerpt: A IUTAM symposium on "Measuring Techniques in Gas-Liquid Two Phase Flows" was held on July 5-8, 1983 in Nancy, France. This topic in cluded instrumentation for steam-water and liquid-vapor flows but strictly excluded measuring techniques for gas or liquid flows with solid particles. The top priority in the paper selection was given to presentations of new methods which had been substantiated by theoretical modeling, calibration tests and comparison tests with other techniques. Examples of experimental resul ts obtained with the proposed instrumentation had to be displayed. However the interpretation of these results in terms of two-phase flow or heat transfer modeling did not fall wi thin the scope of the meeting. Thirty four papers were presented during the Symposium and 79 participants coming from Canada, European countries, Japan and the United States attended the sessions. They represented not only Universities but also state agencies and private companies. After the meeting each paper was peer-reviewed by at least three referees. This is to offer simplified, useful and easily understood methods for dealing with the creep of components operating under conditions met in practice. When the first edition was written, we could not claim that the methods which were introduced were well-tried. They were somewhat conjectural, although firmly based, but not sufficiently well devel oped. Since that time, the Reference Stress Methods (RSM) introduced in the book have received much scrutiny and development. The best recognition we could have of the original methods is the fact that they are now firmly embedded in codes of practice. Hopefully, we have now gone a long way towards achieving our original objectives. There are major additions to this second edition which should help to justify our claims. These include further clarification regarding Reference Stress Methods in Chapter 4. There are also new topics which depend on RSM in varying degrees: • Creep fracture is covered in Chapter 7, where methods for assessing creep crack initiation and crack growth are fully described. This chapter starts with a review of the basic concepts of fracture mechanics and follows with useful, approximate methods, compatible with the needs of design for creep and the availability of standard data. • Creep/fatigue interactions and environmental effects appear in Chapter 8.
