Book Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials 2

Download or read book Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials 2 written by A.C.F. Cocks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials-l was published in 1989 as the proceedings of a Colloquium held in Leicester in the summer of 1988. The Colloquium examined the creep response of a wide range of materials, including metals, engineering ceramics and ice, with the aim of determining similarities in the response of these materials and the way in which their behaviour is modelled. The proceedings were structured so as nature of the Colloquium, with papers to reflect the interdisciplinary grouped together largely on the basis of the phenomena being examined, rather than by class of material. Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials-2 was held in Leicester in Septem ber 1991 to discuss advances made in our understanding of the response of creep brittle materials since the first Colloquium. The scope of the Colloquium was extended to include mineral salts, concrete and com posite systems. These proceedings are once more structured so that the reader can readily compare the response of different material systems and evaluate the suitability of the range of models presented to the materials he is interested in. In fact a number of papers directly compare the of a range of different materials with the aim of identifying behaviour general strategies for the testing and modelling of creeping materials.

Book High Temperature Monotonic and Cyclic Deformation in a Directionally Solidified Nickel Base Superalloy

Download or read book High Temperature Monotonic and Cyclic Deformation in a Directionally Solidified Nickel Base Superalloy written by Eric S. Huron and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directionally solidified (Ds) MAR-M246+Hf was tested in tension and fatigue, at temperatures from 20 C - 1093 C. Tests were performed on (001) oriented specimens at strain rates of 50 % and 0.5 % per minutes. In tension, the yield strength was constant up to 704 C, above which the strength dropped off rapidly. A strong dependence of strength on strain rate was seen at the higher temperatures. The deformation mode was observed to change from heterogeneous to homogeneous with increasing temperature. Low Cycle Fatigue tests were done using a fully reversed waveform and total strain control. for a given plastic strain range, lives increased with increasing temperature. For a given temperature strain rate had a strong effect on life. At 704 C, decreasing strain rates decreased life, while at the higher temperatures, decreasing strain rates increased life, for a given plastic strain range. These results could be explained through considerations of the deformation modes and stress levels. At the higher temperatures, marked coarsening caused beneficial stress reductions, but oxidation limited the life. The longitudinal grain boundaries were found to influence slip behavior. The degree of secondary slip adjacent to the boundaries was found to be related to the degree of misorientation between the grains.

Book Tertiary Creep Damage Modeling of a Transversely Isotropic Ni based Superalloy

Download or read book Tertiary Creep Damage Modeling of a Transversely Isotropic Ni based Superalloy written by Calvin M. Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anisotropic tertiary creep damage formulations have become an increasingly important prediction technique for high temperature components due to drives in the gas turbine industry for increased combustion chamber exit pressures, temperature, and the use of anisotropic materials such as metal matrix composites and directionally-solidified (DS) Ni-base superalloys. Typically, isotropic creep damage formulations are implemented for simple cases involving a uniaxial state of stress; however, these formulations can be further developed for multiaxial states of stress where materials are found to exhibit induced anisotropy. In addition, anisotropic materials necessitate a fully-developed creep strain tensor. This thesis describes the development of a new anisotropic tertiary creep damage formulation implemented in a general-purpose finite element analysis (FEA) software. Creep deformation and rupture tests are conducted on L, T, and 45°-oriented specimen of subject alloy DS GTD-111. Using the Kachanov-Rabotnov isotropic creep damage formulation and the optimization software uSHARP, the damage constants associated with the creep tests are determined. The damage constants, secondary creep, and derived Hill Constants are applied directly into the improved formulation. Comparison between the isotropic and improved anisotropic creep damage formulations demonstrates modeling accuracy. An examination of the off-axis creep strain terms using the improved formulation is conducted. Integration of the isotropic creep damage formulation provides time to failure predictions which are compared with rupture tests. Integration of the improved anisotropic creep damage produces time to failure predictions at intermediate orientations and any state of stress. A parametric study examining various states of stress, and materials orientations is performed to verify the flexibility of the improved formulation. A parametric exercise of the time to failure predictions for various levels of uniaxial stress is conducted.

Book Generic Behavior Framework of SX and DS Nickel base Superalloys with Applications to Constitutive and Life Prediction Modeling

Download or read book Generic Behavior Framework of SX and DS Nickel base Superalloys with Applications to Constitutive and Life Prediction Modeling written by Firat Irmak and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selection of materials to be used for components experiencing extreme conditions is a critical process in the design phase. Nickel-base superalloys have been frequently used for hot gas path components in the turbomachinery industry. These components are required to withstand both fatigue and creep at extreme temperatures during their service time. In general, the extreme temperature materials mostly embody polycrystalline, directionally solidified, and single crystal superalloys. It is essential for design engineers to predict accurate damage behavior and lifespan for these components to prevent catastrophic failures. This dissertation presents a new framework to represent mechanical behavior of Nickel-base superalloys under variety of loading conditions. A set of constitutive and lifing models that can be applied broadly are developed based on observed trends. Despite the development of over 30 variations of single crystal and directionally solidified Nickel-base superalloys, the behavior of these alloys nominally follows similar trends with respect to temperature and orientation. Temperature-, rate-, and orientation- dependence of these materials are studied. The goal is to eliminate extensive time and cost of experiments by creating parameters to be used in strength and life calculations for generic single crystal and directionally solidified Nickel-base alloys. In order to apply generic constants to deformation modeling, a crystal-plasticity model is modified to create stress-strain hysteresis loops. Strain, stress and multi-axial life models are developed to represent the lifing behavior of the candidate alloys under uniaxial and multiaxial environments. Tensile and low-cycle fatigue experiments are conducted to measure the accuracy of these models. Parameters for the models are built on regression fits in comparison with a comprehensive material database. This database includes elastic, plastic, creep, and fatigue properties.

Download or read book Failure by Creep Cracking and Creep Fatigue Interaction in Nickel Base Superalloys written by R. Raj and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this investigation was to study the mechanisms of failure under conditions of creep-fatigue interaction, and creep-crack-growth. The approach was to identify the mechanisms and then develop models for describing failure in terms of the loading variables and the microstructure. In the following sections, the results from each topic are summarized. Further details of the work are available in publications. (Author).
