Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In eight chapters, David Harned explores the theology of the Apostles’ Creed, taking the position that the creed, in fact, provides us with a master image for self-understanding, and that controlling image is “child of God.” The creed is seen as being important for personality formation and the development of “character,” rather than as either a statement of beliefs or a loyalty oath. Harned’s ninth and final chapter is intended for those who wish to pursue further the question of master imagery for the formation of a Christian Sense of Identity.

Book Known by God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian S. Rosner
  • Publisher : Zondervan Academic
  • Release : 2017-09-12
  • ISBN : 0310499836
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Known by God written by Brian S. Rosner and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are you? What defines you? What makes you, you? In the past an individual's identity was more predictable than it is today. Life's big questions were basically settled before you were born: where you'd live, what you'd do, the type of person you'd marry, your basic beliefs, and so on. Today personal identity is a do-it-yourself project. Constructing a stable and satisfying sense of self is hard amidst relationship breakdowns, the pace of modern life, the rise of social media, multiple careers, social mobility, and so on. Ours is a day of identity angst. Known by God is built on the observation that humans are inherently social beings; we know who we are in relation to others and by being known by them. If one of the universal desires of the self is to be known by others, being known by God as his children meets our deepest and lifelong need for recognition and gives us a secure identity. Rosner argues that rather than knowing ourselves, being known by God is the key to personal identity. He explores three biblical angles on the question of personal identity: being made in the image of God, being known by God and being in Christ. The notion of sonship is at the center - God gives us our identity as a parent who knows his child. Being known by him as his child gives our fleeting lives significance, provokes in us needed humility, supplies cheering comfort when things go wrong, and offers clear moral direction for living.

Book The Social Significance of Reconciliation in Paul s Theology

Download or read book The Social Significance of Reconciliation in Paul s Theology written by Corneliu Constantineanu and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-04-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an assessment of the social dimension to reconciliation as displayed in Paul's Letter to the Romans. Traditional exegetical scholarship has treated Paul's presentation of reconciliation as referring to reconciliation between people and God, and has primarily focused use of the word katallage - traditionally translated as 'atonement'. Constantineanu challenges this view and argues that Paul's understanding of the concept is more complex, employing rich symbolism to describe reconciliation with God and between human beings forming together an inseparable reality. The discussion is placed within Paul's overall religious, social and political contexts, showing that an analysis of the social dimension of reconciliation in his thought is both plausible and necessary. Constantineanu offers an analysis of two major sections of Romans, chapters 5-8 and 12-15. Special emphasis is placed on Paul's use of the story of Jesus for community formation, for the shaping of identity, values and community practices. It is thus demonstrated that for Paul God's reconciling initiative, shown in the crucifixion, is not only the pronouncement of God's reconciling the world, but also the ground and model for reconciliation among human beings. It was formerly the Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement , a book series that explores the many aspects of New Testament study including historical perspectives, social-scientific and literary theory, and theological, cultural and contextual approaches.

Book Christian Doctrine Christian Identity

Download or read book Christian Doctrine Christian Identity written by Christopher J. Thompson and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Doctrine, Christian Identity is an elegant study of Augustine's Confessions, a classic narrative of Christian experience written 1600 years ago. With insights concerning character, the development of integrity and the organic nature of moral experience, Confessions provides an excellent example for those wishing to promote a narrative approach to Christian theology. In this book, Christopher Thompson investigates the impact of Augustine's work on leading figures in narrative ethics, including MacIntyre, Hauerwas, Stroup, and Crites. He then considers Confessions on the subject of Creation and discusses the influence of this important theological theme on the nature of Christian identity. By considering contemporary narrative ethics in light of Augustine's reflections, Thompson eloquently reveals that a doctrine of creation is essential for truly understanding the meaning of life. Theologians and other religious scholars will find much to their liking in this thought-provoking study.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Organizational Identity

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Organizational Identity written by Michael G. Pratt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of organizational identity has been fast growing in management and organization studies in the last 20 years. Identity studies focus on how organizations define themselves and what they stand for in relation to both internal and external stakeholders. Organizational identity (OI) scholars study both how such self-definitions emerge and develop, as well as their implications for OI, leadership and change, among others. We believe there are at least four inter-related reasons for the growing importance of OI. OI addresses essential questions of social existence by asking: Who are we and who are we becoming as a collective? It is a relational construct connecting concepts and ideas that are often viewed as oppositional, such as "us" and "them" or "similar" and "differen." OI is also nexus concept serving to gather multiple central constructs, also represented in this Handbook. Finally, OI is inherently useful, as knowing who you are is the foundation for being able to state what you stand for and what you are promising to others, no matter their relation with the organization. The Handbook provides a road-map to the OI field organized in over 25 chapters across seven sections. Each chapter not only offers a broad overview of its particular topic, each also advances new knowledge and discusses the future of research in its area of focus.

Book The Apostles Creed In Light of Today s Questions

Download or read book The Apostles Creed In Light of Today s Questions written by Wolfhart Pannenberg and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2000-06-19 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is not enough to recite the Apostles' Creed; one must enter into its statements enquiringly, reflectively, critically." Today's Christian may repeat the Apostles' Creed Sunday after Sunday; but couched as it s in archaic language, its meaning is often lost to him. "In spite of that," says Dr. Pennenberg, "we can still repeat the creed in church without doing violence to our personal sincerity as long as we are able to adhere to the intention behind its statements." Book The Personal Creed Project and a New Vision of Learning

Download or read book The Personal Creed Project and a New Vision of Learning written by John Creger and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Personal Creed Project is a classroom-based rite of passage that English teacher John Creger has developed over the past ten years with his sophomore classes. Recognized by NCTE as an invaluable resource for teachers of the English language arts and now being adapted in elementary, middle, and high schools as well as universities around the country, the Creed Project invites students to interrelate the facts, meanings, and values that inform their personal lives with their academic learning, making possible a quality of engagement rarely seen in traditional learning. Indeed, Creger advocates creating a parallel personal leg of curriculum that challenges educators to devote as much care and expertise to promoting students' personal learning as they do to developing their academic skills. In this book, Creger describes exactly how the Creed Project fits into his English course, and how it can fit into and benefit yours. Along the way, as his students do with theirs, he takes on his own "Big Questions," inquiring into the central aim of learning and what it is about the Creed Project that makes teachers and students so excited. His book provides: a provocative and refreshing exploration into the nature of learning a careful unfolding of the theory, grounded in the later thinking of James Moffett, upon which his practice is built new perspectives and terms to empower the classroom a "Two-Legged Learning" design approach, interweaving the academic and personal easy-to-understand graphic representations of ideas and strategies step-by-step instructions to bring the Creed Project to life in your classroom a flexible organization to allow for differing reading or study approaches a consideration of how students of color, African-American students in particular, might benefit from adaptations of the Creed Project a rich cross-section of student voices-from the most disengaged to the most brilliantly high-achieving-eagerly endorsing this personal design for learning a related website, www.universeWired.com, with downloadable support materials for the Personal Creed Project and Two-Legged Learning, along with student writings and related items of interest. With this guidebook in hand, you can put the Personal Creed Project into practice in your classroom-and, even better, in your students' lives long after.
