Book Early English Composers and the Credo

Download or read book Early English Composers and the Credo written by Wendy J Porter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-23 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops an innovative approach for understanding the relationship between music and words in the works of five major composers of the English Renaissance: John Taverner, Christopher Tye, John Sheppard, Thomas Tallis, and William Byrd. Focusing on these composers’ settings of the Latin Credo, the author shows how musical and linguistic emphasis can be used to understand the composers’ theological interpretations of the text. By combining markedness theory with style analysis, this study demonstrates that the composers used their musical skills to not only create beautiful music but also raise certain elements of the text to the foreground of perception and relegate others to supporting roles, inviting listeners to experience the familiar words of the liturgy in unique ways. Providing new insights into the changing musical and religious world of the sixteenth century, this book is relevant to anyone researching music or religion in early modern England, while offering a flexible and widely adaptable tool for the analysis of musical-textual relationships.

Book Papal Music and Musicians in Late Medieval and Renaissance Rome

Download or read book Papal Music and Musicians in Late Medieval and Renaissance Rome written by Richard Sherr and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1998-05-21 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects twelve of the papers given at a conference held at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C., on 1-3 April 1993, in conjunction with the exhibition `Rome Reborn: The Vatican Library and Renaissance Culture'. A group of distinguished scholars considered music in medieval and Renaissance Rome. The volume presents a series of wide-ranging and original treatments of music written for and performed in the papal court from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. New discoveries are offered which force a radical reevaluation of the Italian papal court as a musical centre during the Great Schism. A series of motets for various popes are subject to close analysis. New interpretations and information are offered concerning the repertory of the papal chapel in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the institutional life of the papal singers, and the individual biographies of singers and composers. Thought-provoking, even controversial, evaluations of the music of composers connected with, or thought to be connected with, Rome and the papal court, such as Ninot le Petit, Josquin, and Palestrina round out the volume.

Book excerpt: In the twelve months before his sudden death, Hans Urs von Balthasar had been writing a series of reflections on the twelve articles of the Apostles' Creed. These texts, which are undoubtedly among the last things he wrote, take on the character of a legacy, a spiritual testament. For they amount in their extraordinary compactness and depth to a little "summa" of his theology. What he had set out in detail in numerous books over five decades, he summarizes here in contemplative plainness and simplicity. All the characteristics that make von Balthasar's work so distinctive and valuable are to be found here: breadth of vision, loveliness of style, and an intuitive-contemporary passion that allows him to "pray intellectually and think 'cordially'." In his warm and extensive introduction to the book, Medard Kehl speaks of von Balthasar's "unclouded, almost childlike joy in the richness and beauty of the Mystery" of the threefold God, which "is evidenced in his interpretation of the creed."

Book Analyzing the Music of Living Composers and Others

Download or read book Analyzing the Music of Living Composers and Others written by Jack Boss and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the Music of Living Composers (and Others) is a collection of essays that grew out of the 2010 annual meeting of the West Coast Conference of Music Theory and Analysis. The stated purpose was to apply traditional music-analytic techniques, as well as new, innovative techniques, to describing the music of composers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The goal was to take steps toward making the music of our time a bit less impenetrable for our colleagues, students and other listeners by showing how it follows, varies, and sometimes controverts the organizational schemes of older music. This collection includes chapters analyzing music of older eras as well, including a number that throw light on the analysis of recent music in unexpected ways, and there are also several chapters that propose innovative analytic approaches to recent popular music and jazz.

Download or read book PALESTRINA FOR ALL written by Jonathan Boswell and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book explores the music of the great composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594), its surrounding history and still unfolding potential. It follows the music from love poetry, through changing events in the Church Year, to the composer's record-breaking 104 Mass settings, uncovering many neglected treasures on the way. Its approach is accessible and largely non-technical. There is a focus on relationships with text, belief and ceremony, the individual melodic lines, and the richly interweaving voice parts (cantus, alto, tenor, bass). Not least, the author explores diverse ways - emotional, devotional, imaginative - of enjoying and responding to the music. Here is music which excels in differentiation, equality, consonance and cordiality between the voice parts. Much of it can be interpreted as symbolising ideal community and core beliefs about the eternal God There is a striking avoidance of tight metricality, mighty forces, tumult or disjunction. The music's leading values are those of clarity, balance, affectionate concord and graceful flowingness.{WHAT SOME LEADING PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE BOOK}'Historian Jonathan Boswell has brought a lifetime's fascination with the life and music of Palestrina to bear in a new book, the first accessible general guide in English to appear for several decades' (Early Music Today, news, June 2019).'Worthy of its title ... well-chosen examples ... in every way a suitable introduction for music lovers of all descriptions' (Tamesis).'Anyone interested in exploring Palestrina should start with this account ... I very much applaud the author' (Peter Phillips, The Tallis Scholars).'So refreshing, so personal, so illuminating ... Book Twentieth Century Organ Music

Download or read book Twentieth Century Organ Music written by Christopher S. Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores twentieth-century organ music through in-depth studies of the principal centers of composition, the most significant composers and their works, and the evolving role of the instrument and its music. The twentieth-century was a time of unprecedented change for organ music, not only in its composition and performance but also in the standards of instrument design and building. Organ music was anything but immune to the complex musical, intellectual, and socio-political climate of the time. Twentieth-Century Organ Music examines the organ's repertory from the entire period, contextualizing it against the background of important social and cultural trends. In a collection of twelve essays, experienced scholars survey the dominant geographic centers of organ music (France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, the United States, and German-speaking countries) and investigate the composers who made important contributions to the repertory (Reger in Germany, Messiaen in France, Ligeti in Eastern and Central Europe, Howells in Great Britain). Twentieth-Century Organ Music provides a fresh vantage point from which to view one of the twentieth century's most diverse and engaging musical spheres.
