Book excerpt: The comparative analysis of socialist and capitalist economic systems has given rise to a voluminous literature in the history of economic thought, yet detailed analysis of the 'market socialism' model, which seeks to imitate the functional efficiency of capitalism by simulating a competitive economy, has been relatively neglected. In this work, Mateusz Machaj seeks to redress this imbalance by providing an in-depth examination of one of the defining issues that separates capitalism from socialism - the system of ownership, or property rights - which, when explored, highlight fundamental problems in the market socialism model.

Book Equal Shares

Download or read book Equal Shares written by John E. Roemer and published by Verso. This book was released on 1996 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Nice idea, but it doesn’t work in practice.” How often have socialists had this claim thrown back at them? And now, after the events of 1989, many of the Left are openly wondering what a defensible idea of socialism would be. This work addresses this question, taking as its point of departure John Roemer’s model of “coupon socialism”. Roemer’s model aims to combine the market with a commitment to equality through a simple, yet starkly radical, proposal: all citizens would receive an equal number of coupons with which to buy ownership rights (voting, dividends) in companies. These coupons would constitute a second, separate form of currency, but could not be exchanged for ordinary money, nor transferred to other people. Not all the contributors to this collection endorse Roemer’s working model of market socialism, but they are all stimulated by his foray into a “real utopia”.

Book Understanding Marxism

Download or read book Understanding Marxism written by Richard D. Wolff and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should we pay attention to the great social critics like Marx? Americans, especially now, confront serious questions and evidences that our capitalist system is in trouble. It clearly serves the 1% far, far better than what it is doing to the vast mass of the people. Marx was a social critic for whom capitalism was not the end of human history. It was just the latest phase and badly needed the transition to something better. We offer this essay now because of the power and usefulness today of Marx's criticism of the capitalist economic system. eBook: https: //bit.ly/2K6iI8

Book Law and Policy for China s Market Socialism

Download or read book Law and Policy for China s Market Socialism written by John Garrick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume presents fresh empirical research on the emerging outcomes of China’s law reforms. The chapters examine China’s ‘going out’ policy by addressing the ways in which the underpinning legal reforms enable China to pursue its core interests and broad international responsibilities as a rising power. The contributors consider China’s civil and commercial law reforms against the economic backdrop of an outflow of Chinese capital into strategic assets outside her own borders. This movement of capital has become an intriguing phenomenon for both ongoing economic reform and its largely unheralded underpinning law reforms. The contributors ask probing questions about doing business with China and highlight the astonishing escalation of China’s outbound foreign direct investment (OFDI). Law and Policy for China's Market Socialism includes contributions from leading China-law scholars and specialist practitioners from the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries who all extend the examination of powerful influences on China’s law reforms into new areas. Given the forecast for the growth of China’s domestic market, those wishing to gain a better understanding and seeking success in the world's most dynamic marketplace will benefit greatly from reading this book. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Chinese economics and business, Chinese Law, Chinese politics and commercial law.

Book The Philosophy and Economics of Market Socialism

Download or read book The Philosophy and Economics of Market Socialism written by N. Scott Arnold and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-08-18 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N. Scott Arnold argues that the most defensible version of a market socialist economic system would be unable to realize widely held socialist ideals and values. In particular, it would be responsible for widespread and systematic exploitation. The charge of exploitation, which is really a charge of injustice, has typically been made against capitalist systems by socialists. This book argues that it is market socialism--the only remaining viable form of socialism--that is systematically exploitative.

Book Market Socialism Or the Restoration of Capitalism

Download or read book Market Socialism Or the Restoration of Capitalism written by Anders Aslund and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When East European communism collapsed in the revolutions of 1989, the newly liberated countries discarded socialism altogether. For the first time, most of Eastern Europe experienced free elections and a multitude of parties, mostly with liberal, conservative or nationalist connotations, made their entry into political life. A bewildered world is now trying to imagine the future course of events. Has capitalism won or is something different emerging? Has market socialism vanished for good? How can the transitionary period be managed and what effect will it have on the standard of living in Eastern Europe? In this book, ten distinguished experts explore this transition to a market economy in Eastern Europe. In part I the authors consider what remains of market socialism. Wlodzimierz Brus discusses the future roles of both planning and the market, Mario Nuti argues that market socialism never existed, whilst Gerhard Fink outlines how a normal market economy can be established.

Book Emerging Business Ventures under Market Socialism

Download or read book Emerging Business Ventures under Market Socialism written by Ping Zheng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidly changing market environment in China requires more research to understand fully the empirical processes of management practice and the business landscape in which they operate. Based on longitudinal case study research between 2005 and 2010, this book explores the distinctive characteristics of emerging forms of economic enterprise under market socialism in China. Adopting a holistic view, it explores how rapid environmental and institutional changes in economic reforms are impacting upon their practice, and assesses the role of government policy in shaping their ownership and management processes. Through the changing patterns in the development of business ventures, it outlines the dynamics of industrial and organizational change under the transitional phases of a market socialist economy, and explores the tensions which emerge. This comparative perspective will be of interest to academics, researchers and advanced students of business growth and enterprise management, particularly those wishing to explore China, Chinese business and emerging economies.

Book Explorations and Proposals toward Market Socialism and World Government

Download or read book Explorations and Proposals toward Market Socialism and World Government written by James A. Yunker and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book blends real-world history, intellectual history, and personal history into a compelling case for a new way of thinking about such highly controversial—and highly misunderstood—concepts as market socialism, a Global Marshall Plan, and world government. It argues that, if properly designed according to clear and specific blueprints, all three of these possibilities would indeed greatly benefit humanity if they were fully implemented. The book puts a human face on these proposals by documenting their origin and development through a detailed account of the author’s professional efforts over a long and productive academic career. This story of steadfast determination in the face of steep odds will resonate deeply with every person who has nourished a vision that is commonly dismissed as excessively idealistic and unrealistic.
