Book Murder in Amish Ohio A The Martyrdom of Paul Coblentz

Download or read book Murder in Amish Ohio A The Martyrdom of Paul Coblentz written by David Meyers and Elise Meyers Walker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1957, a young Holmes County farmer was gunned down in cold blood. There was little to distinguish this slaying from hundreds of others throughout the United States that year except for one detail: Paul Coblentz was Amish. A committed pacifist, Coblentz would not raise a hand against his killers. As sensational crimes often do, the "Amish murder" opened a window into the private lives of the young man, his family and his community--a community that in some respects remains as enigmatic today as it was more than half a century ago. Authors of Wicked Columbus, Ohio's Black Hand Syndicate and others, David Meyers and Elise Meyers Walker unravel the intricacies surrounding one of Ohio's most intriguing murder cases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Review: "Eber combines a sensitive, reflexive style of writing, to create a powerful and insightful account of the changing uses of alcohol among Mayan women. The result is a text that is ethnographically rich and theoretically challenging. Alcoholism is much more than a substance abuse issue, it is embedded in social, gender, and ethnic relations"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57. http://www.loc.gov/hlas/

Book Supplement to the Handbook of Middle American Indians Volume 3

Download or read book Supplement to the Handbook of Middle American Indians Volume 3 written by Victoria Reifler Bricker and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteen-volume Handbook of Middle American Indians, completed in 1976, has been acclaimed the world over as the single most valuable resource ever produced for those involved in the study of Mesoamerica. When it was determined in 1978 that the Handbook should be updated periodically, Victoria Reifler Bricker, well-known cultural anthropologist, was elected to be general editor. This third volume of the Supplement is devoted to the aboriginal literatures of Mesoamerica, a topic receiving little attention in the original Handbook. According to the general editor, "This volume does more than supplement and update the coverage of Middle American Indian literatures in the Handbook. It breaks new ground by defining the parameters of a new interdisciplinary field in Middle American Indian studies." The aim of the present volume is to consider literature from five Middle American Indian languages: Nahuatl, Yucatecan Maya, Quiche, Tzotzil, and Chorti. The first three literatures are well documented for both the Classical and Modern variants of their languages and are obvious candidates for inclusion in this volume. The literatures of Tzotzil and Chorti, on the other hand, are oral, and heretofore little has been written of their genres and styles. Taken together, these essays represent a substantial contribution to the Handbook series, with the volume editor's introduction placing in geographic perspective the five literatures chosen as representative of the Middle American literary tradition.

Book That s a Crazy One

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mel Stones
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2017-05-21
  • ISBN : 9780692775639
  • Pages : 170 pages

Download or read book That s a Crazy One written by Mel Stones and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That's A Crazy One is an inside look at the youth culture that dominated downtown NYC in the early 1990's. That same culture that helped spark the multi-million dollar industries of skateboarding and streetwear that exist now. The subjects were the inspiration for Larry Clark's cult classic film KIDS. In stark contrast to the storyline told in the film,it is the true capture of what life was like for the cast of KIDS prior to the film being made and released. Photographed by Mel Stones & High throughout 1991-1995, the two teenage girls used NYC public school darkrooms to develop and print these images. Shot by insiders, That's A Crazy One is a rare archival portrait of early NYC street skating and the intimate relationships that existed between this crew of kids. Shot in low light on 35mm film pushed to the max, the images are grainy and gritty and bring you back to Pre-Giuliani New York rawness. That's a Crazy One features images that run a wide gamut, from kids sleeping on the train, skateboarding through the streets, smoking weed and drinking 40's, to the abandoned buildings and roof that were their playgrounds. However it is the dedication of the book that sets the tone for the images that follow. Once read, you realize that many of the kids on these pages are no longer among the living. Often mistaken as a documentary film, KIDS left an aftershock amongst this group of teenagers long after the limelight faded, with no solid foundation many met tragic ends. These lives so superficially portrayed on screen were genuinely struggling and that struggle materialized in the deaths of many of them. The images evoke the painful truth of how one can feel alone and together at the same time.Too painful to face their losses, these images have remained archived for over 20 years. That's A Crazy One takes you through their cathartic journey. All profits from book sales will be donated to NYC Public Schools Photography Program in memorial to their departed.

Book From Hitler to Jim Crow to Obama

Download or read book From Hitler to Jim Crow to Obama written by ChitlinKraut and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-11-20 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julian, online, I took note of an alarming number of thisisbyus writers posting horrendous and racist comments about a young Senator from Illinois, actively campaigning for President of the United States. Posting under the moniker “Gabby on the Gulf Coast” I promoted From Hitler to Jim Crow, a story about the displaced in Pensacola, my goal: write for the world and move forward the first-hand accounts about their struggles. I so wanted the world to care about the continued and unrelenting day-to-day plight of human beings who lost everything due to a hurricane. While some thisisbyus writers posted words revealing genuine concern and some provided positive feedback regarding the prose I chose there were countless others who took issue with the title, From Hitler to Jim Crow. Up to this point I never realized how many writers peddled their influence via virtual words attempting to set their plans of distraction in place against Senator Obama. Embracing a laissez-faire attitude has never been my style and I understood the price for the poor, the displaced, was too high for me to remain silent where these savvy writers were concerned. As these writers began using Hitler and his ideology in their comparisons to Senator Obama I found myself becoming increasingly insulted. Julian, I am proud to be an American, though naturalized, and using any analogy to Hitler enabled me to confront their criminal words as it became clear Senator Obama had a real shot at the White House. Conversely, Senator Hillary Clinton’s supporters became to a greater extent venomous with what I perceived to be their race-based objections used as diversions when they saw the handwriting on the wall Senator Obama was becoming the frontrunner in the race to the White House. As I held tight to my dream and goal to show the plight of the displaced in Pensacola I found myself washed into a political hurricane once other writers became more and more aware of the strength of my conviction that Senator Obama was the only logical choice for President of the United States of America.
