Book Calkin Algebras and Algebras of Operators on Banach SPates

Download or read book Calkin Algebras and Algebras of Operators on Banach SPates written by Caradus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the appearance of Banach algebra theory, the interaction between the theories ofBanach algebras with involution and that of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space hasbeen extensively developed. The connections of Banach algebras with the theory ofbounded linear operators on a Hilbert space have also evolved, and Calkin Algebras andAlgebras of Operators on Banach Spaces provides an introduction to this set of ideas. The book begins with a treatment of the classical Riesz-Schauder theory which takesadvantage of the most recent developments-some of this material appears here for the firsttime. Although the reader should be familiar with the basics of functional analysis, anintroductory chapter on Banach algebras has been included. Other topics dealt with includeFredholm operators, semi-Fredholm operators, Riesz operators. and Calkin algebras. This volume will be of direct interest to both graduate students and research mathematicians.

Book excerpt: It's a sad truth that math has the reputation of being "difficult." Part of the problem is that many of us simply don't speak the language. To a mathematician, an equation is a compact, efficient way to put across a relationship that would be far less comprehensible in words. But to many of us, the merest sign of an x, y, or symbol is an impenetrable mess that our eyes bounce off. This book provides an engaging overview of what math is and what it can do, without having to solve simultaneous equations or prove geometric theorems, far more of us might get the point of it. It is divided into four chapters, each covering a major developmental route in the topic, from Arithmetic & Numbers to Geometry and from Algebra & Calculus to Applied Mathematics.

Book Differential Equations on Measures and Functional Spaces

Download or read book Differential Equations on Measures and Functional Spaces written by Vassili Kolokoltsov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-20 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This advanced book focuses on ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in Banach and more general locally convex spaces, most notably the ODEs on measures and various function spaces. It briefly discusses the fundamentals before moving on to the cutting edge research in linear and nonlinear partial and pseudo-differential equations, general kinetic equations and fractional evolutions. The level of generality chosen is suitable for the study of the most important nonlinear equations of mathematical physics, such as Boltzmann, Smoluchovskii, Vlasov, Landau-Fokker-Planck, Cahn-Hilliard, Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman, nonlinear Schroedinger, McKean-Vlasov diffusions and their nonlocal extensions, mass-action-law kinetics from chemistry. It also covers nonlinear evolutions arising in evolutionary biology and mean-field games, optimization theory, epidemics and system biology, in general models of interacting particles or agents describing splitting and merging, collisions and breakage, mutations and the preferential-attachment growth on networks. The book is intended mainly for upper undergraduate and graduate students, but is also of use to researchers in differential equations and their applications. It particularly highlights the interconnections between various topics revealing where and how a particular result is used in other chapters or may be used in other contexts, and also clarifies the links between the languages of pseudo-differential operators, generalized functions, operator theory, abstract linear spaces, fractional calculus and path integrals.

Book C Algebras by Example

  • Author : Kenneth R. Davidson
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Society, Fields Institute
  • Release : 2023-10-04
  • ISBN : 1470475081
  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book C Algebras by Example written by Kenneth R. Davidson and published by American Mathematical Society, Fields Institute. This book was released on 2023-10-04 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of C*-algebras received a dramatic revitalization in the 1970s by the introduction of topological methods through the work of Brown, Douglas, and Fillmore on extensions of C*-algebras and Elliott's use of $K$-theory to provide a useful classification of AF algebras. These results were the beginning of a marvelous new set of tools for analyzing concrete C*-algebras. This book is an introductory graduate level text which presents the basics of the subject through a detailed analysis of several important classes of C*-algebras. The development of operator algebras in the last twenty years has been based on a careful study of these special classes. While there are many books on C*-algebras and operator algebras available, this is the first one to attempt to explain the real examples that researchers use to test their hypotheses. Topics include AF algebras, Bunce–Deddens and Cuntz algebras, the Toeplitz algebra, irrational rotation algebras, group C*-algebras, discrete crossed products, abelian C*-algebras (spectral theory and approximate unitary equivalence) and extensions. It also introduces many modern concepts and results in the subject such as real rank zero algebras, topological stable rank, quasidiagonality, and various new constructions. These notes were compiled during the author's participation in the special year on C*-algebras at The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences during the 1994–1995 academic year. The field of C*-algebras touches upon many other areas of mathematics such as group representations, dynamical systems, physics, $K$-theory, and topology. The variety of examples offered in this text expose the student to many of these connections. Graduate students with a solid course in functional analysis should be able to read this book. This should prepare them to read much of the current literature. This book is reasonably self-contained, and the author has provided results from other areas when necessary.

Book Interpolation Theory

Download or read book Interpolation Theory written by Alessandra Lunardi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third edition of the 1999 lecture notes of the courses on interpolation theory that the author delivered at the Scuola Normale in 1998 and 1999. In the mathematical literature there are many good books on the subject, but none of them is very elementary, and in many cases the basic principles are hidden below great generality. In this book the principles of interpolation theory are illustrated aiming at simplification rather than at generality. The abstract theory is reduced as far as possible, and many examples and applications are given, especially to operator theory and to regularity in partial differential equations. Moreover the treatment is self-contained, the only prerequisite being the knowledge of basic functional analysis.

Book An Introduction to Measure Theory

Download or read book An Introduction to Measure Theory written by Terence Tao and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a graduate text introducing the fundamentals of measure theory and integration theory, which is the foundation of modern real analysis. The text focuses first on the concrete setting of Lebesgue measure and the Lebesgue integral (which in turn is motivated by the more classical concepts of Jordan measure and the Riemann integral), before moving on to abstract measure and integration theory, including the standard convergence theorems, Fubini's theorem, and the Carathéodory extension theorem. Classical differentiation theorems, such as the Lebesgue and Rademacher differentiation theorems, are also covered, as are connections with probability theory. The material is intended to cover a quarter or semester's worth of material for a first graduate course in real analysis. There is an emphasis in the text on tying together the abstract and the concrete sides of the subject, using the latter to illustrate and motivate the former. The central role of key principles (such as Littlewood's three principles) as providing guiding intuition to the subject is also emphasized. There are a large number of exercises throughout that develop key aspects of the theory, and are thus an integral component of the text. As a supplementary section, a discussion of general problem-solving strategies in analysis is also given. The last three sections discuss optional topics related to the main matter of the book.
