Book Craniofacial Neuralgia

Download or read book Craniofacial Neuralgia written by Dr. Pratik C. Parkarwar and published by CONSCIENCE WORKS PUBLICATION. This book was released on 2022-03-02 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dentistry has enjoyed a remarkable period of technological and scientific growth over the past several decades. With the increase in life expectancy, the number of individuals seeking dental care also has escalated. One of the most common reasons for seeking care is because of pain and/or dysfunction, usually involving the teeth or periodontal tissues. However, musculoskeletal, vascular, and neuropathic causes of orofacial pain occur frequently. The need to understand pain and all of its ramifications is of utmost importance in diagnosis and case-specific, evidence-based management of conditions afflicting the masticatory system. The most recent definition of pain, produced by the task force on taxonomy of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) is “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage” . Orofacial pain encompasses a myriad of signs and symptoms within and outside the oral cavity. To establish a differential diagnosis for orofacial pain we must first consider the history, examination and relevant investigations. Although both may co-exist, the more rare non-dental pain must be distinguished from dental pain to avoid unnecessary dental treatment and to organize appropriate referral for the patient. Principles Of Pain Diagnosis The examination and assessment of patients with chronic orofacial pain is challenging for all clinicians. In most disorders, no specific biologic marker validated diagnostic criteria or gold standard exists. A systematic approach for collecting diagnostic information is needed to minimize the risk of missing critical information. Identifying the true source of pain History, physical examination, and behavioral assessment usually serve as the basis for diagnosis. Frequent re evaluation including assessment of the effects of treatment is an important part of this Differentiating the many causes of facial pain can be difficult for busy practitioners, but a logical approach to history taking is important and will aid more rapid diagnoses with effective management. Although primary care clinicians are not be expected to diagnose rare pain conditions, they should be able to assess the presenting pain complaint and refer to the appropriate center. It is important that primary care practitioners provide sufficient detailed information of history, examination and investigation findings in their referral letters to ensure appropriate direction of the referral within the secondary/tertiary care institution. Underlying causes of orofacial pain are wide ranging and complex, but a greater understanding of a patient’s facial pain symptoms, towards establishing a diagnosis or differential diagnosis, can be achieved by obtaining a good pain history and carrying out a good clinical examination.

Book Trigeminal Neuralgia and Other Cranial Neuralgias

Download or read book Trigeminal Neuralgia and Other Cranial Neuralgias written by Joanna M. Zakrzewska and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trigeminal neuralgia and other cranial neuralgias comprise a group of facial pain conditions, characterised by disabling pain attacks that selectively respond to specific treatments. Although not as common migraine, they affect over 1% of the population and must be recognised and adequately treated in clinical practice. The spectrum of cranial neuralgias is wide and as a consequence the conditions are managed by a range of different specialists. Studies show that delayed diagnoses and mismanagement are common and can lead to depression and suicide. 36 recognised experts from nine countries have contributed to OPML Trigeminal Neuralgia and Other Cranial Neuralgias to guide you through the maze of pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis-making, and condition-specific treatments. The approach is practical and evidence-based and ready for real-world applications. The value of phenotyping, targeted investigations, and treatment algorithms is emphasised. The editors and contributors subscribe to the view that there needs to be a holistic approach with multidisciplinary teams working together and with patients being at the centre of this process. Psychologists and patent support groups can help to ensure that patients are managed holistically and share the decision-making process. Their involvement in the handbook has helped to emphasis this. There remain considerable challenges, but the field is rapidly evolving and there are increasing number of opportunities opening up to improve our understanding of these conditions and hence their management. The editors and contributors have included case scenarios, algorithms, self-administered tools for training in diagnosis and management, clinical tips and carefully chosen references. Each chapter includes a lay summary and key points and can be read as a stand-alone unit.

Download or read book Trigeminal Neuralgia written by Peter J. Jannetta and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-18 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter J. Jannetta, the neurosurgeon/neuroscientist who has contributed so much to the evaluation and treatment of trigeminal neuralgia and other cranial nerve disorders brings together the most distinguished contributors in Trigeminal Neuralgia. This seminal work collates and categorizes in one succinct volume what we understand about the various forms of face pain syndromes. By providing information on former beliefs, as well as current understanding, this book provides multiple options regarding diagnosis, medical treatment and operative intervention which will help decision making, develop knowledge and improve care of patients. Irigeminal Neuralgia begins with an Introduction explaining where we were and what role those ideas have played in current thinking, all with the goal of giving the reader a basis for future thought. With each subsequent chapter - written by basic scientists and astute clinicians working in the area of facial pain - enigmas are clarified, solutions of apparently untreatable problems are presented, and a better understanding of how diagnoses and pathophysiology are evolving are presented. This is a must read for all who would learn about neurogenic facial pain.

Book Neuromodulation for Facial Pain

Download or read book Neuromodulation for Facial Pain written by K.V. Slavin and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuropathic pain involving the face can be very severe and disabling; often, it is hard to control with conventional means and requires use of unconventional interventions on various parts of the trigeminal nociceptive pathways. For the last 60 years, neuromodulation has been used specifically for the treatment of intractable pain in different parts of the human body, including the face and head region. Despite such a long history and existence of many neuromodulation targets, there has not been a dedicated book that would summarize the entire spectrum of neuromodulation approaches that have been – and still are – used for treatment of facial pain. This book begins with dedicated chapters on classification of facial pain and anatomy of facial pain pathways and then dives into specific applications of neuromodulation starting from the periphery all the way to cerebral centers of pain processing, covering both invasive and non-invasive approaches. Written by experts from all over the word, the book offers an up-to-date comprehensive summary of neuromodulation techniques and modalities, providing the readers with a practical guide on clinical details of patient selection, modulation parameters, procedural details, and expected outcomes that may be used in daily clinical practice dealing with most difficult facial pain conditions.

Book The Surgical Treatment of Facial Neuralgia

Download or read book The Surgical Treatment of Facial Neuralgia written by J. Hutchinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgical Treatment of Facial Neuralgia Reference to the list of published writings on the subject which is given at the end of this work will prove how numerous, yet how widely scattered they are. Professor Krause's valuable monograph, published in 1896, is, however, the only one which gives at all a complete review, and it is largely occupied with questions relating to the physiology of the fifth nerve. I have only briefly discussed these points, with the view of confining the present account to practical details. Considerable difference of opinion still exists as to the best forms of operation for facial neuralgia. The hope of providing a clear account of a complex and difficult subject, and of making it more simple is the chief reason for this work.
