Book Crack Propagation in Linear and Nonlinear Visoelastic Material

Download or read book Crack Propagation in Linear and Nonlinear Visoelastic Material written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this project is tile formulation and analysis of canonical boundary value problems modeling dynamic fracture in elastic and viscoelastic material. The selection of specific problems is guided by a number of goals. (1) One goal is to understand and model a number of surprising experimentally observed features of dynamic crack propagation in brittle polymers that are not predicted by classical linear elastic fracture mechanics. (2) Another goal is to solve dynamic fracture boundary value problems incorporating a crack tip cohesive zone whose constitutive law is derived from micromechanical models of the physical processes occurring at the tip of a growing crack in a brittle polymer. (3) A third goal is to develop combined analytical and numerical solution schemes for the above canonical dynamic fracture boundary value problems which can be used to benchmark and test direct numerical methods for solving such problems.

Book Dynamic Steady State Crack Propagation in Linear Isotropic Viscoelastic Material

Download or read book Dynamic Steady State Crack Propagation in Linear Isotropic Viscoelastic Material written by J. R. Walton and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is a summary of results of some recent analytical studies of dynamic, steady-state crack propagation in linear viscoelastic material. Closed form solutions are presented for the problems of a semi-infinite, anti-plane shear crack propagating with constant speed in an infinite general linear viscoelastic body and in a layer of finite thickness. For both boundary value problems, and for a general class of shear modulus, the solutions obtained exhibit a universal structure that depends in a simple way upon the time dependent shear modulus and crack speed. The forms for the solutions are convenient for the extraction of qualitative and quantitative information about the dependence of the stress field in the body upon the loading, the crack speed and the shear modulus. Book A Theory of Crack Growth in Viscoelastic Media

Download or read book A Theory of Crack Growth in Viscoelastic Media written by R. A. Schapery and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory is developed for predicting the time-dependent size and shpae of cracks in linearly viscoelastic, isotropic media, and its validity is demonstrated by applying the theory to crack growth and failure of unfilled and particulate-filled polymers. Starting with a bounded solution for the stress distribution near a crack tip in an elastic body and the extended correspondence principle for viscoelastic media with moving boundaries, a simple equation is derived for predicting instantaneous crack tip velocity in terms of the opening-mode stress intensity factor; although the undamaged portion of the continuum is assumed linear, no significant restrictions are placed on the nature of the disintegrating material near the crack tip and, therefore, this material may be highly nonlinear, rate- dependent, and even discontinuous. A further analysis is made to predict the time at which a crack starts to grow, and then some explicit solutions are given for this so- called fracture initiation time, the time- dependent crack growth, and the time at which gross failure occurs under time- varying applied forces and environmental parameters. Following a derivation of the linear cumulative damage rule, an examination of its theoretical range of validity, and a discussion of the experimental determination of fracture properties, the theory is applied to monolithic and composite materials under constant and varying loads. Some concluding remarks deal with extensions of the theory to include finite strain effects, crack growth in the two shearing modes and in combined opening and shearing modes, and adhesive fracture. Book Dynamic Fracture and Deformation of Solid Propellant

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture and Deformation of Solid Propellant written by R. A. Schapery and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to two distinct but related topics have been made: (1) high speed crack growth in linear viscoelastic media and (2) nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive equations for particle-filled rubber with microcracks. Both are relevant to the dynamic mechanical response of solid propellant. Work was completed and published 1 on the dynamic steady-state propagation of an antiplane shear crack in a general linear viscoelastic layer. An infinite series representation for the stress intensity factor was derived, each term of which can be calculated recursively in closed-form. A simple, universal dependence upon crack speed and basic material properties was found. These results represnt a significant step in understanding the influence of a physical dimenson (the layer thickness) on dynamic stresses in the neighborhood of crack tips in rate-dependent materials. Another paper is partly a summary of principal results in 1 and 3 and contains new material not published elsewhere. Specifically, the analysis of 3 was extended to derive the full stress field in the body. A much simpler form than was presented in 3 for the entire stress field ahead of and in the plane of the crack was exhibited and the angular dependence of the local stress field at the crack tip was calculated. Keywords: Micromechanics; Particulate Composites; Asymptotic expansion.

Book Computational Methods in Fracture Mechanics

Download or read book Computational Methods in Fracture Mechanics written by Ferri M.H.Aliabadi and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2010-12-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters BCI (WoS). The existence of crack-like flaws cannot be precluded in any engineering structure. At the same time, the increasing demand for energy- and material-conservation dictates that structures be designed with smaller and smaller safety factors. Consequently, accurate quantitative estimates of the flaw-tolerance of structures are of direct concern to the prevention of fracture in load-bearing components of all kinds: ranging from space satellites and aircraft to bone prosthesis and home appliances.
