Download or read book Cpl Cox written by Eric J. Cox and published by The Charlotte Press. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran CPL COX is not a hero. He?s an average American who joined the military during peacetime with the dream of honor and willingness to sacrifice in the service of his country. On February 7, 2003, he left loved ones behind, stepped into the darkness of the unknown and found himself in the midst of Operation Iraqi Freedom.#13; #13; This memoir, rewritten from the pages of his journal, delivers an informative, personal, thought-provoking and sometimes poignant look into his wartime experience. But even more remarkable is the insight it provides regarding the inner struggles CPL COX had to face as a member of the United States military -- the physical, emotional and psychological challenges faced similarly, yet in their own individual ways by American service men and women all over the world.#13; #13; WAR CHANGES LIVES? ?What was it like?? Eric J Cox does an excellent job of answering this question although what you may find most astonishing is that combat was only a prelude to the psychological battles he would face. With the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime, his unit?s wartime role was basically over, yet their hardest days were yet to come?#13;

Book The World War One Diary and Art of Doughboy Cpl Harold W Pierce

Download or read book The World War One Diary and Art of Doughboy Cpl Harold W Pierce written by William J Welch and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2024-06-30 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the vivid diary entries and artwork of Harold W. Pierce, this book offers a gripping firsthand account of a young soldier's journey through World War I. April 1917. Eighteen-year-old Harold W. Pierce leaves school to join the U.S. Army, specifically the National Guard infantry company from heavily forested Warren County in northwestern Pennsylvania. He’s big for his age and he’s determined to serve his country. Thirteen months later, having trained at the steaming hot tent city of Camp Hancock in Georgia, Pierce and the rest of the 28th Division’s 112th Infantry Regiment is on its way to England and then to France. He’s one of the First Battalion’s scouts so he’ll see the war from a different perspective than the rest of the infantrymen, which includes his older brother Hugh. What Pierce sees, hears and feels will fill the small diary he keeps in his pocket. His descriptions become a diary of 79,000 words. His descriptions, his insights, his fears and his hopes bring the war to life as a young man experiences it. This young man, though, has a keen ability to express and describe that goes beyond his years: The abject terror of being in the middle of a sustained artillery barrage, his fear as he desperately tries to dig in as machine gun bullets fly inches over his head, and the relief he feels when an artillery round splits the air where he would have been if he had not – inexplicably – stopped walking. Pierce has moments when he does not want to answer the runner’s call of his name, when all he wants to do is sleep in a safe shelter. But he does answer and he goes on the patrol that all are convinced will be a one-way mission. Pierce survives it all, becoming a state police trooper in Pennsylvania after the war and later the chief law enforcement instructor for that state’s Public Service Institute until his retirement in 1966. In 1979, the diary was printed in serialized form in a small Pennsylvania newspaper. Throughout his life Pierce took to canvas to depict a variety of scenes from the World War. Included in this book are six of those paintings. Pierce died in 1983.

Book Memoirs of Cpl Ira I Boggs 1895 1983

Download or read book Memoirs of Cpl Ira I Boggs 1895 1983 written by Dallas Boggs and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ira I. Boggs (1895-1983), a veteran of World War I, was a West Virginia mountaineer as rugged as the mountains in which he lived most of his life. He survived by practicing his strong Christian faith, toughened by hard work while growing up in a large family sustained only by the fat of the land and the sweat of the brow. His machine gun battalion was alternately labeled Pershing’s Pets and the Sightseeing Battalion because they followed behind the main front and traveled extensively while in ready reserve for their final sacrifice. A less envious title for a machine gun unit was The Suicide Troops. (In battle, they had an average life expectancy of seven minutes.) He was on his way to the active front when the armistice was declared, but he narrowly escaped some enemy bombs when his unit lit up their campfires in a premature anticipation of cease-fire. His extensive travels gave him a special appreciation for the natural beauty of his home state, and he had a rare talent for describing it.

Book My Brother s Keeper Poems of the Vietnam war by Marine Cpl Rod Padilla

Download or read book My Brother s Keeper Poems of the Vietnam war by Marine Cpl Rod Padilla written by Rodwick Padilla and published by America Star Books. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All war is horrific and life-altering. Most of those who do the fighting are unable to speak about it openly. But the act of sharing their experience with others can be life-affirming. These are the raw war poems of Vietnam veteran Marine Cpl. Rod Padilla. They are a spontaneous outpouring of his battlefield experience years after the event. The voice is authentic. The poems are unedited. It is hoped that the publication of this book may help alleviate the suffering of others. A sense of the emotional depth and immediacy of the poems is best illustrated by this wall rubbing of the name of Rod Padilla’s fallen brother from the Vietnam veteran’s war memorial. Rod Padilla lives in Montara, California with his wife and family. He recently retired from a long career in youth education, and now spends much of his time in veteran affairs and community service. His hobby is rebuilding vintage muscle cars.
