This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Book Observation of CP Violation in B DK Decays

Download or read book Observation of CP Violation in B DK Decays written by Paolo Gandini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CP violation is a well-established phenomenon in particle physics, but until 2001 it was only observed in kaons. In the last decade, several matter-antimatter asymmetries have been observed in neutral B mesons in line with the expectations of the Standard Model of the weak interaction. Direct CP violation is also expected in the decay rates of charged B+ mesons versus that of B- mesons, though the greatest effects are present in a decay that occurs just twice in 10 million decays. Such rarity requires huge samples to study and this is exactly what the LHC, and its dedicated B-physics experiment LHCb provide. This thesis presents an analysis of the first two years of LHCb data. The author describes the first observation of the rare decay, B- → DK-, D → π-K+ and the first observation of direct CP violation in this B decay. The work constitutes essential information on the experiment’s measurement of a fundamental parameter of the theory and stands as a benchmark against which subsequent analyses of this type will be compared.

Book CP Violation in the Hadronic Ks Meson Decays

Download or read book CP Violation in the Hadronic Ks Meson Decays written by Michał Silarski and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete symmetries as parity P, charge conjugation C and time reversal T, as well as their combinations such as CP and CPT play a fundamental role in particle physics. The CP symmetry violation was discovered unexpectedly in 1964 during the regeneration studies of the neutral K mesons, and result in a far-reaching consequences. In the framework of the Standard Model it implies the existence of the third generation of quarks. Moreover, it is a very important mechanism which could have an essential contribution to the asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the Universe. Parameters describing CP violation in neutral kaon decays were measured with a good precision and at present the main experimental effort is focused on studies of the neutral B and D meson systems. However, there are still several interesting open issues in the kaon physics, like rare Ks meson decays. This work is focused on the measurement of the rare CP violating Ks 3 0 decay branching ratio based on the data sample gathered with the KLOE detector operating at the -factory DA NE in the Italian National Center for Nuclear Physics in Frascati.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present results on time-dependent CP asymmetries in neutral B decays. The measurements use a data sample of about 88 million?(4S) → B{bar B} decays collected between 1999 and 2002 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We study events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state and the other B meson is determined to be either a B° or {bar B}° from its decay products. Final states considered include B° → J/?K{sub S}°, B° → J/?K{sub L}°, B° → J/??°, B° → D* D*−, B° →?K{sub S}°, B° →?+?−, and B° →?{sup {+-}}?{sup {-+}}.

Book B Physics And Cp Violation Proceedings Of The 2nd International Conference

Download or read book B Physics And Cp Violation Proceedings Of The 2nd International Conference written by Thomas E Browder and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-04-04 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CP violation is one of the most subtle effects in the Standard Model of particle physics and may be the first clue to the physics that lies beyond. Charge conjugation, C, and parity, P, are symmetries of particle interactions. C corresponds to the operation of replacing a particle by its antiparticle, while P is the operation of mirror reflection. Before 1956, it was believed that these were also symmetries of the interactions of elementary particles. In 1956, C S Wu found evidence for P violation in the weak interaction. Theorists proposed that the combination of CP would be a symmetry of the weak interaction. In 1964, Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay found the first evidence for the violation of CP symmetry in the decays of kaons.Although Kobayashi and Maskawa then showed how the Standard Model can accommodate the observed CP violation, Wolfenstein pointed out that it is also possible that there is a new interaction in addition to the usual four, called the superweak interaction, which is responsible for the asymmetry. To test this idea, the observation of a different type of asymmetry, called direct CP violation, is required; in the kaon sector, very precise measurements of the ratio of kaon decay rates are necessary. In B decay modes where a second order weak process whimisically named “penguin” interferes with another suppressed, first order “tree” amplitude, it may also be possible to observe these direct CP-violating effects.B physics and CP violation is now one of the major growth areas in high energy physics. Nearly every major high energy physics laboratory now has a project underway to observe the large CP asymmetries expected in the B sector and to test the consistency of the Standard Model. The unitarity of the Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix in the Standard Model implies the existence of three phases, called alpha, beta and gamma, which can be determined by the measurements of CP asymmetries in B decays. About 200 participants gathered in Hawaii in March 1997 to discuss the progress in the field, and this important book constitutes the proceedings of that conference.

Book excerpt: This 2nd edition is an extensive update of "B Decays?. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future. The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders. The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of ?Penguin? mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the ?Standard Model? and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.

Book A Study of Time Dependent CP Violating Asymmetries and Flavor Oscillations in Neutral B Decays at the Upsilon 4S

This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample consists of 29.7 fb−1 recorded at the?(4S) resonance and 3.9 fb−1 off-resonance. One of the neutral B mesons, which are produced in pairs at the?(4S), is fully reconstructed in the CP decay modes J/? K{sub S}°,?(2S) K{sub S}°,?{sub c1} K{sub S}°, J/? K*° (K*° → K{sub S}°?°) and J/? K{sub L}°, or in flavor-eigenstate modes involving D(*)?/?/1 and J/? K*° (K*° → K?−). The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of its decay, mainly with the charge of identified leptons and kaons. A neural network tagging algorithm is used to recover events without a clear lepton or kaon tag. The proper time elapsed between the decays is determined by measuring the distance between the decay vertices. Wrong-tag probabilities, the time-difference resolution function, and the B°-{bar B}° oscillation frequency?m{sub d}are measured with a sample of about 6350 fully-reconstructed B° decays in hadronic flavor-eigenstate modes. A maximum-likelihood fit to this flavor eigenstate sample finds?m{sub d} = 0.516 ± 0.016 (stat) ± 0.010 (syst) ps−1. The value of the asymmetry amplitude sin2? is determined from a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of the flavor-eigenstate sample and about 642 tagged B° decays in the CP-eigenstate modes. We find sin2? = 0.59 ± 0.14 (stat) ± 0.05 (syst), demonstrating that CP violation exists in the neutral B meson system. We also determine the value of the CP violation parameter.

Book A Study of Factorization and a Measurement of CP Violation

Download or read book A Study of Factorization and a Measurement of CP Violation written by Bryan Dahmes and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Furthermore, we present the results on the time-dependent CP asymmetry in neutral B meson decays to the CP eigenstate J/psiKL. The measurements use a data sample of about 88 million Upsilon(4S) & rarr; BB & d1; decays collected between 1999 and 2002 with the BABAR detector. We study events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in the J/psiKL final state and the other B meson is determined to be either a B0 or a B & d1;0 from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin 2beta, is derived from the decay-time distributions in such events. We measure sin 2beta = 0.723 +/- 0.158(stat.)+/-0.086(syst.), which is consistent with Standard Model expectations.
