Book The Bobcat of North America

Download or read book The Bobcat of North America written by Stanley P. Young and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Stanley P. Young completes his series of monographs on the major predatory mammals of North America. As in his earlier works, The Wolves of North America; The Puma, Mysterious American Cat; and The Clever Coyote, Mr. Young writes with the authority of a field biologist who has studied his subjects for more than a quarter of a century in the intimacy of their own habitat, from coast to coast and from the northern limits of their range in Alaska and Canada to the deserts of Mexico. Mr. Young, now Director of Bird and Mammal Laboratories in the Branch of Wildlife Research of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, began his career as a biologist in the old Bureau of Biological Survey When much of the Activity of that agency hinged around the control of predatory animals. In this and in later capacities he has probably handled, weighed, measured, and studied more specimens, alive and dead, of the bobcat in its many races than any other scientist. In addition to his own wide experiences he has drawn upon the wealth of records and field observations of farmers, stockmen, trappers, predator hunters, state and federal biologists, and wildlife technicians in the files of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The book is a complete scientific study of the subject from every angle, interestingly spiced with anecdotes from the author’s own rich personal experience. How big is a “big” bobcat? How serious is bobcat predation on game animals? How can a small bobcat pull down and kill a deer five times its own weight? What are the habits and habitat of the bobcat? What are the ranges of its various scientifically recognized races? All of these questions and many more are answered in the pages of this generously illustrated book.

Download or read book Bobcat written by Kevin Hansen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bobcat: Master of Survival tells the story of the most adaptable and resilient wild feline in the world. While half the wild cat species worldwide are in danger, the bobcat is thriving, even expanding its range in North America. Why are bobcats flourishing when so many other wild felines are advancing towards extinction? The book explains how scientists apply the latest in wildlife research technology to probe this diminutive predator's habits and behavior. The reader is invited inside the bobcat's world to see how they hunt, kill prey, raise their young, coexist with humans, and deftly navigate the endless obstacles to survival. The bobcat is both the most studied and the most exploited wild feline in the world. Millions have been killed for the fur trade. They were the focus of major controversy in the 1970s that transformed international conservation of wild felines. The book discusses how economics and politics play a far greater role in bobcat management and conservation than does science. Bobcat is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book on the natural history and management of bobcats to appear in 40 years.

Book Bobcat and Coyote Management Scenarios

Download or read book Bobcat and Coyote Management Scenarios written by Melissa Eileen Stanger and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coyotes (Canis latrans) are now commonplace in cities across the United States, and bobcats (Lynx rufus) are growing in numbers within city limits as years pass. These generalist mesocarnivores have adapted their behaviors to thrive in an anthropogenic environment. This phenomenon is largely unnoticed by much of the public. However, humans have struggled to adapt their behaviors in response to the increased presence of mesocarnivores in cities. The urban public in the United States is generally uncertain how to foster a healthy relationship with wildlife in urban areas. Management agencies tend to be more reactive rather than proactive in dealing with carnivores, but proactive management may be necessary to foster human-carnivore co-existence in urban areas. We sought to better understand residents’ judgements of appropriate responses to interactions with coyotes and bobcats in scenarios not involving a threat to human safety. To do this we conducted cross-sectional surveys of adult residents of the United States and the state of Ohio and embedded randomly assigned carnivore interaction scenarios in which respondents were asked to choose the most appropriate method of predator control in response to each scenario. In our first study (chapter 2) we determined the likelihood that an individual would switch their preferred method of predator control between two human-mesocarnivore scenarios. We found that switching was predicted best by the location in which the scenarios occurred (i.e., residential or agricultural area) and second by an increase in severity between the two scenarios’ context. Interestingly, a variety of cognitive (e.g., wildlife value orientations, affect towards the species of carnivore) and demographic (e.g., gender, level of urbanization in respondent residency) factors identified in prior studies is impacting judgments about the acceptability of various types of control had no impact on the odds of a respondent preferring the same form of predator control in response to different scenarios. In our second study (chapter 3) we found that an individual’s predator control preferences in scenarios with no direct threat to human safety were moderately associated with the respondent’s residential experience (i.e., the extent to which their current and childhood residences were located in more rural vs. urban locations). Additionally, wildlife value orientations were not as predictive as the urbanization level in respondent residency when predicting an individual’s predator control preferences across multiple scenarios. Collectively, these results demonstrate (1) the importance of context (i.e., location and severity of conflict incidents) and (2) residential experience in explaining judgments concerning appropriate means of controlling predators.

Book excerpt: Whenever middle-aged desert tour guide Forrest Bryant Johnson went out on his daily walks into the Mojave, all was usually peaceful and serene. But one beautiful summer day in 1987, Forrest heard a cry of distress. Following the cries, he came upon a small bobcat kitten, injured, orphaned, and desperately in need of help. So Forrest took his new feline friend home for a night. But when the little “trooper” clearly needed some more time to recoup, that night turned into two nights, a week, and eventually nineteen years. And so Trooper became a part of the Johnson family. And in those nineteen years, Trooper lived his nine lives to the fullest. He explored desert flora and fauna around him, befriending kit foxes, jackrabbits, desert tortoises, and other creatures and getting into mischief along the way. Trooper became a “big brother” to stray tabby Little Brother, teaching, guiding, and protecting Brother on the pair’s adventures and misadventures. He became a beloved patient at his local vet, and cherished housemate of Forrest’s wife, Chi. And Trooper even managed to melt the icy heart of a tough guy neighbor. But most of all, throughout his nineteen years, Trooper became Forrest’s best friend, as the two shared each other’s worries and frustrations, musings and rants, joys and laughter. Harrowing and heartfelt, Trooper: The Bobcat Who Came in from the Wild is for any reader who ever had their heart stolen by their pet.

Book Predator Hunting

Download or read book Predator Hunting written by Bill Bynum and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the effects of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the European Union (EU) on the national foreign policies of Ireland and Austria. Small and neutral EU member states provide a fascinating case-study as the CFSP entails a dilemma. Their size may create assumptions that they are more likely to adopt EU policy, yet the traditional position of neutrality acts contrary to Europeanization. By concentrating on the reciprocal relationship between EU and national foreign policy, the book takes a new and innovative approach to investigate prospects for a common European foreign policy, and goes beyond an examination of changes in the national foreign policies of Ireland and Austria to provide an engaging explanation and understanding of Europeanization. Based on a comprehensive conceptual framework, this text investigates three dimensions of national foreign policy; the Europeanization of foreign policy-making, the Europeanization of foreign policy substance and effects on neutrality, to create an accessible and informed insight into the evolution of European cooperation and foreign policy, and the impact on national identity. EU Foreign Policy and the Europeanization of Neutral Stateswill be of interest to students and scholars of European Studies, International relations and Foreign Policy.
