Book Cows Ain t Hard

Download or read book Cows Ain t Hard written by William J. Wright and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All farmers want to be doctors, and all doctors want to be farmers. Bill Wright got caught up in the back half of that statement after buying the pasture next door to prevent someone from converting it into a pig farm or salvage yard. He had several friends who ran cows who offered advice, but mainly he was making it up as he went along. What happened next is how campfire stories come about. Wright’s grandchildren have heard the stories so many times that they now tell them themselves. He is still the county standard by which all cow operations are compared, as in, “This is what he did, so don’t do that.” Come through that hole in the fence and join the journey of going from the owner of an empty field to a cattle baron by not paying attention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poor Scottish immigrant finds work and Shakespearean drama on a ranch in the backcountry of colonial South Carolina in this novel. Vividly set in the rich pluralistic culture and primeval landscape of colonial South Carolina, this historical novel brings to life, and back into our memory, the birth of free-range cattle herding that would later come to be associated exclusively with the American West. Drawing on his accomplished career as a leading scholar of the anthropology and history of the early South, Charles Hudson weaves a compelling tale of adventure and love in the colorful tapestry of Charles Town taverns, backcountry trails, pinewoods cattle ranges, hidden villages of remnant native peoples, river highways, rice plantations, and more. Hudson’s narrative revolves around William MacGregor, a young Scottish immigrant trying to establish himself in the New World. A lover of philosophy and Shakespeare, William is penniless, which leads him to take work as a cow-hunter (colonial cowboy) for a pinder (colonial rancher) of a cowpen (colonial ranch) in the Carolina backcountry. The pinder, an older man with three daughters, sees his world unraveling as he ages. The parallel to King Lear does not escape William, who gets caught up in the family drama as he falls in love with the pinder’s youngest daughter. Except for the boss of his crew, who is the pinder’s son-in-law, William’s fellow cow-hunters are slaves: an old Indian captured in Spanish Florida, a Fulani captured in Africa, and two brothers, half-Indian and half-African, who were born into slavery in the New World. A rogue bull adds a chilling element of danger, and the romance is complicated by a rivalry with a wealthy rice planter’s son. William struggles to salvage something from the increasingly disastrous situation, and the King Lear-like dissolution of the cowpen proceeds apace as the story heads toward its conclusion. “With an ethnohistorian’s attention to context and detail, Charles Hudson has written a compelling novel about the eighteenth-century Carolina backcountry and its memorable characters, the likes of whom the documentary record rarely reveals.” —Theda Perdue, professor emerita of history, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill “Whether trudging through the dismal swamps, riding through the solitary longleaf forest, or just hanging out at the cowpen, Hudson renders the life of an eighteenth-century Southern cow hunter’s life palatable and real. With a true sense of place and time, Hudson brings the little-known colonial South Carolina backcountry to spectacular life.” —Robbie Ethridge, professor of anthropology, The University of Mississippi

Book Recollections and Experiences of a Horse Cattle and Farm Machinery Dealer Auctioneer Car Salesman and Farmer

Download or read book Recollections and Experiences of a Horse Cattle and Farm Machinery Dealer Auctioneer Car Salesman and Farmer written by W.A. IRWIN and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I'm writing about memories and experiences in my life from back in the 40's to present day. It has been a great time to be alive and we had great places to live. We farmed and ran our auction business in Bruce County, Ontario for a few years after college but the lure of lower priced land enticed us to move to Prince Edward Island where we lived for 25 years. In later years we found that the markets for livestock seemed to be drying up on the Island as the potato industry grew. We decided to move back to Bruce County so it was coming home for us. We bought a farm between Port Elgin and Southampton and have been here 18 years now. This book is a collection of short stories to do with our lives in these areas as well as our travels in the United States. Like it mentions on the cover these stories have to do with my experiences as a horse, cattle and farm machinery dealer, as an auctioneer, car salesman, farmer, as well as quite a few other random stories.

Book Pay Attention to the Thin Cow

Download or read book Pay Attention to the Thin Cow written by Gene A. Hoots and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1979 when Tom Quinn and Gene Hoots began investing together, there have been a major bull market, a gigantic bubble, two major bear markets, and heart-stopping stock market plunges. Through all of this, their firm has adhered to its investment philosophy. Pay Attention to the Thin Cow is a collection of CornerCap's writings through 2005. Running the $4 billion benefit funds of R. J. Reynolds worldwide gave the CornerCap founders an opportunity to study the investment industry "close up and personal." The experience became an investment laboratory where they were exposed to the best of the players in the institutional investment world - the consultants, the banks, and the mutual fund giants, the private advisory firms both in the US and abroad. After a decade of observing what worked and what didn't, they set up CornerCap, a firm that was based on the best practices of the investors they studied. These CornerCap commentaries consistently describe and reinforce those practices to the reader. They explain, in simple understandable terms, straightforward advice - advice that they always point out is "easy to understand, but very hard to do." While it is a collaborative effort, much of the book reflects the personal experiences of Gene Hoots. He has had the unique opportunity to work in the corporate world as a major customer of investment services for twenty plus years and then help create a small, entrepreneurial firm that is a supplier of those same services. He notes that size really doesn't alter the rules; the same investing principles apply to everyone. Along the way, he also offers opinions on the major issues he believes we are facing in America today, and an occasional view of corporate life from the inside. This book will not give the reader tips on becoming an overnight millionaire, or on day trading as a path to fame and fortune, or even how to spot a "hot" stock. Rather, it is a collection of essays from CornerCap's first fifteen years that the CornerCap people hope will make the readers a bit more informed about their own investments, and less vulnerable to all of the missteps that can steadily erode their efforts to accumulate wealth - consistent mistakes that can add up to huge losses over a lifetime. Avoiding these common investing mistakes can greatly increase the prospect of meeting long term financial goals, no matter whether you are saving for a secure retirement or your grandchildren's education. In Pay Attention to the Thin Cow, Gene Hoots shares his experiences from five decades in the corporate and investment worlds, from both the large and small viewpoint, sometimes as a participant and sometimes as an observant bystander.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From October 1959 until the mid-1970s, Paul Oliver and Mack McCormick collaborated on what they hoped to be a definitive history and analysis of the blues in Texas. Both were prominent scholars and researchers—Oliver had already established an impressive record of publications, and McCormick was building a sprawling collection of primary materials that included field recordings and interviews with blues musicians from all over Texas and the greater South. Despite being eagerly awaited by blues fans, folklorists, historians, and ethnomusicologists who knew about the Oliver-McCormick collaboration, the intended manuscript was never completed. In 1996, Alan Govenar, a respected writer, folklorist, photographer, and filmmaker, began a conversation with Oliver about the unfinished book on Texas blues. Subsequently, Oliver invited Govenar to assist him, and when Oliver became ill, Govenar enlisted folklorist and ethnomusicologist Kip Lornell to help him contextualize and document the existing manuscript for publication. The Blues Come to Texas: Paul Oliver and Mack McCormick’s Unfinished Book presents an unparalleled view into the minds and methods of two pioneering blues scholars.

Download or read book Crazy Were We In The Head written by Paul Enns Wiebe and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in a Mennonite family in Inverness, Idaho back in the forties and fifties, John Reisender is perplexed. Why had Great-grandma been married in a Muslim mosque way hell and gone out in the wilds of Central Asia? On the road to solving this puzzle, he finds himself excommunicated, temporarily, from the family religion. He discovers that his maternal grandfather had escaped Czarist Russia, acts as an undertaker for a cat’s funeral, takes a crash course in Nietzsche from the keeper of the city dump, escapes drowning, becomes an unsung, accidental semi-hero in a high school football game, cheats death on a spelunking expedition, and falls in lust with a pious girl who sports a derriere that reminds him of the WWII pinup girl, Betty Grable. With a Dickensian cast of characters brimming with eccentrics, Crazy Were We in the Head hilariously and often movingly chronicles a singular American boyhood. And if I laugh at any mortal thing, ’Tis that I may not weep. —Lord Byron
