Book Gender Whiteness and Power in Rodeo

Download or read book Gender Whiteness and Power in Rodeo written by Tracey Owens Patton and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-08-20 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lure of cowgirls and cowboys has hooked the American imagination with the lure of freedom and adventure since the turn of the twentieth century. The cowboy and cowgirl played in the imagination and made rodeo into a symbolic representation of the Western United States. As a sport that is emblematic of all things “Western,” rodeo is a phenomenon that has since transcended into popular culture. Rodeo’s attraction has even spanned oceans and lives in the imaginations of many around the world. From the modest start of this fantastic sport in open fields to celebrate the end of a long cattle drive or to settle a friendly “who’s the best” bet between neighboring ranches, rodeo truly has grown into an edge-of-the-seat, money-drawing, and crowd-cheering favorite pastime. However, rodeo has diverse history that largely remains unaccounted for, unexamined, and silenced. In Gender, Whiteness and Power in Rodeo Tracey Owens Patton and Sally M. Schedlock visually explore how race, gender, and other issues of identity complicate the mythic historical narrative of the West. The authors examine the experiences of ethnic minorities, specifically Latinos, American Indians, and African Americans, and women who have continued to be marginalized in rodeo. Throughout the book, Patton and Schedlock questioned the binary divisions in rodeo that exists between women and men, and between ethnic minorities and Whites—divisions that have become naturalized in rodeo and in the mind of the general public. Using iconic visual images, along with the voices of the marginalized, Patton and Schedlock enter into the sometimes acrimonious debate of cowgirls and ethnic minorities in rodeo.

Book excerpt: Hysteria 6 is the anthology of all 30 winning stories, flash fiction and poetry from the 2017 Hysteria Writing Competition. This is the sixth year of the Hysteria Writing Competition. When we began, it was with a single competition in mind, since then it's grown beyond our original expectations and is now a major part of the Hysterectomy Association year and the writing calendar. Each of these outstanding entries are written by the authors, writers and poets to entertain, stimulate and provoke the reader. We have no set theme beyond the broadest of statement 'what interests women'. Each year, I'm always amazed at the variety of entries that cross our path. They surprise, delight, entrance and inform. The thirty entries in this anthology are the best of the best. This is the fifth anthology from the Hysteria Writing Competition. Hysteria 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 from the 2012 to 2016 competitions are also available to buy. If you've enjoyed this collection then you'll love the others too.

Book Westernwear

  • Author : Sonya Abrego
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2022-11-03
  • ISBN : 1350147680
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book Westernwear written by Sonya Abrego and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the prosperous, forward-thinking era after the Second World War, a growing number of men, women, and children across the United States were wearing fashions that evoked the Old West. Westernwear: Postwar American Fashion and Culture examines why a sartorial style with origins in 19th-century agrarian traditions continued to be worn at a time when American culture sought balance between technocratic confidence in science and technology on one side, and fear and anxiety over global annihilation on the other. By analysing well-known and rarely considered western manufacturers, Westernwear revises the common perception that fashionable innovation came from the East coast and places western youth cultures squarely back in the picture. The book connects the history of American working class dress with broader fashionable trends and discusses how and why Native American designs and representations of Native American people were incorporated broadly and inconsistently into the western visual vocabulary. Setting westernwear firmly in context, Sonya Abrego addresses the incorporation of this iconic style into postwar wardrobes and popular culture, and charts the evolution of westernwear into a modern fashion phenomenon.

Book No Place Like Motorhome

Book excerpt: City girls LOVE country boys, right? When a country-loving bachelor gets a rude introduction to a cultured, sophisticated city-girl, they instantly clash. But as they’re thrown together time and again, they realize, their two worlds might not be as far apart as they initially thought. Meet Darcy... As Darcy Granger finishes her graduate degree and looks for employment, her parents make the inexplicable decision to abandon successful careers, lease their New York City apartment, and purchase a motorhome to become "full-timers." As a young adult she should be eager to start her own life, but her wounded inner child mourns that her safety net has been pulled away and there's no nest for her to fly back to. To make the transition easier, her parents invite her to stay with them while she looks for a job as a research librarian. Born and raised in New York City, Darcy struggles to acclimate to the campy lifestyle her parents have adopted. They drag her out on rural excursions where high-heeled shoes dare not go and forms of outdoorsy torture lurk around every bend in the road. Then there's Marc... Marc Fitzsimmons is a twenty-seven-year-old writer who roams the country, pulling a travel trailer behind his pickup truck and penning articles for magazines. He loves living a casual life on the go, seeing new sights and meeting new people at every stop. The career he's chosen feeds his adventurous soul and fills him with satisfaction, but it's definitely made it difficult to date. He’s almost given up the idea of marrying and having children, knowing the odds of finding a woman who wants to share his lifestyle are slim to none. When these two meet on the campground, sparks fly, but as they get to know one another, those sparks ignite a flame in their hearts that is hard to ignore! A lighthearted clean romance novel.
