Book Reusability of Facemasks During an Influenza Pandemic

Download or read book Reusability of Facemasks During an Influenza Pandemic written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-08-24 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any strategy to cope with an influenza pandemic must be based on the knowledge and tools that are available at the time an epidemic may occur. In the near term, when we lack an adequate supply of vaccine and antiviral medication, strategies that rely on social distancing and physical barriers will be relatively more prominent as means to prevent spread of disease. The use of respirators and facemasks is one key part of a larger strategy to establish barriers and increase distance between infected and uninfected individuals. Respirators and facemasks may have a role in both clinical care and community settings. Reusability of Facemasks During an Influenza Pandemic: Facing the Flu answers a specific question about the role of respirators and facemasks to reduce the spread of flu: Can respirators and facemasks that are designed to be disposable be reused safely and effectively? The committee-assisted by outstanding staff-worked intensively to review the pertinent literature; consult with manufacturers, researchers, and medical specialists; and apply their expert judgment. This report offers findings and recommendations based on the evidence, pointing to actions that are appropriate now and to lines of research that can better inform future decisions.

Book Contributing Factors to Personal Protective Equipment Shortages During the COVID 19 Pandemic

Download or read book Contributing Factors to Personal Protective Equipment Shortages During the COVID 19 Pandemic written by Jennifer Cohen and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the forces that contributed to severe shortages in personal protective equipment in the US during the COVID-19 crisis. Problems from a dysfunctional costing model in hospital operating systems were magnified by a very large demand shock triggered by acute need in healthcare and panicked marketplace behavior that depleted domestic PPE inventories. The lack of appropriate action on the part of the federal government to maintain and distribute domestic inventories, as well as severe disruptions to the PPE global supply chain, amplified the problem. Analysis of trade data shows that the US is the world's largest importer of face masks, eye protection, and medical gloves, making it highly vulnerable to disruptions in exports of medical supplies. We conclude that market prices are not appropriate mechanisms for rationing inputs to health because health is a public good. Removing the profit motive for purchasing PPE in hospital costing models and pursuing strategic industrial policy to reduce the US dependence on imported PPE will both help to better protect healthcare workers with adequate supplies of PPE.

Book Reusable Health Care Textiles for Use in Personal Protective Equipment

Download or read book Reusable Health Care Textiles for Use in Personal Protective Equipment written by Health and Medicine Division and published by . This book was released on 2025-03-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal protective equipment (PPE) is a critical part of infection prevention and health care worker (HCW) protection. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed gaps in the ability of health care systems to ensure HCWs have adequate access to PPE during times of surge in demand, placing both HCWs and patients at risk. In March 2024, the National Academies convened a public workshop to identify opportunities to increase the use of reusable health care textiles (HCTs) used for PPE in health care settings. Speakers emphasized reusable textiles' potential to protect health care staff and their patients, reduce waste and environmental effects from disposable HCTs, prepare for future pandemics, and provide cost savings.

Book 3D Printing in Medicine and Its Role in the COVID 19 Pandemic

Download or read book 3D Printing in Medicine and Its Role in the COVID 19 Pandemic written by Frank J. Rybicki and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how “makers” with no medical experience became and remain clinically important because they utilized 3D printing to produce supplies for healthcare, including medical and non-medical devices, and to improve the quality of life for patients with COVID-19 and those who care for them. It shows how 3D printing became vital during the pandemic due to its broad availability and the inherently digital nature of the work that enables thriving digital exchanges and work in isolation. Subsequent chapters highlight some of the “maker” communities' efforts that made a difference in their part of North America. Each contribution describes the unique experiences, challenges, and successes. While this book is written and edited mostly from a medical perspective, additional input from medical engineers, administrators, attorneys, and public safety officials enables a broad perspective to highlight some of the ingenuity from the North American 3D printing community who responded to the initial case volumes of COVID-19.

Book The Case for Masks

Download or read book The Case for Masks written by Dean Hashimoto and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science behind wearing a mask to stop the spread of Coronavirus, from a top expert in the field. In America, the debate over whether or not masks should be worn to prevent the spread of COVID-19 has become enmeshed with political affiliation, views on religious and personal freedoms, and conflicting media reports on the benefits and dangers of facial coverings. But now, several months into this pandemic, what does science say? What have we learned from international case studies? Dr. Hashimoto, the chief medical officer who oversees the Workplace Health and Wellness division at Mass General Brigham, a Harvard Medical School affiliated healthcare system, presents the current research, making the case that wearing masks in public is a key part of saving lives and bringing this pandemic to a halt. Citing specific examples of situations where infected individuals wore masks versus ones who didn't and how that changed the outcome, as well as population-based studies in individual states and by country, and the undeniable effect that universal masking had on Mass Brigham Hospital's staff of 75,000, Dr. Hashimoto offers a clear and compelling argument for the benefits of masking. In addition, he explains the complementary roles of social distancing, washing hands, coronavirus testing, and face shields, and a thorough exploration of what kinds of masks are most effective at stopping the spread of viruses and how they should be fitted and worn. He addresses safety concerns and medical misconceptions about mask wearing, why the CDC didn't recommend universal mask wearing at the beginning of the pandemic, and how employers can promote mask wearing in their workplaces. Don't wear a mask just because someone told you to. Find out the real reasons for masking and understand the science for yourself.

Book Best Practices for Contingency Planning After COVID 19

Download or read book Best Practices for Contingency Planning After COVID 19 written by Jeffrey Ackerman and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March of 2020, the world was forever changed when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global pandemic due to the emergence of a disease called COVID-19. During a time of global pandemic, society attempted to slow the spread of disease before vaccinations were developed through techniques such as social distancing and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). As a result, the demand for PPE surged to historical records, and supply was not able to meet demand. This resulted in worldwide shortages for all different types of PPE, and even healthcare providers struggled to obtain the necessary PPE to protect themselves while treating COVID-19 patients. Therefore, the intent of this research is to provide a list of best practices and recommendations for contingency planning after COVID-19, specifically for the PPE industry. Current literature was reviewed and analyzed, and best practices were garnered from the literature. Three industry executives were also interviewed about their thoughts and experiences with PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their opinions and recommendations were compared and contrasted with the best practices from literature, and ultimately a list of holistic best practices was developed and recommended for contingency planning. Best practices for contingency planning include enhancing the Strategic National Stockpile infrastructure, bringing more PPE manufacturing onshore in the U.S., improving end-to-end PPE inventory monitoring, filtering out misinformation on social media platforms, establishing clear guidelines on the reuse of PPE, and developing innovative ways for consumers to dispose of masks in order to mitigate environmental damage.
