Book excerpt: EveryWoman, a coalition of women’s organizations and formations (currently numbering 11), combined with individual women affiliates and backed up by a FaceBook Page (with more than 100,000 followers), was formally organized in August, 2017, for the purpose of defending democracy and upholding women’s rights and dignity at a time when these are under severe attack not only in the Philippines but globally. We had come together, cutting across diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, professional, ideological, and generational backgrounds, to propel organized pushback against the further erosion of civic (also civil) space and of the status and rights that Filipino women have fought hard to attain and have won over the years. As such, our actions in the past years have tended towards the loud and dramatic – in the streets, in public fora, in stinging public statements, often joining our voice with those of our allied Hubs in Tindig Pilipinas. A book had no space in our crowded blueprint for 2020. But then the COVID-19 pandemic happened. As with everyone else, EveryWoman’s world was turned upside down. Needing to get back our bearings – personally, organizationally, politically – we started discussions to try to understand the situation better, including the nature of this global health crisis, how it was affecting different aspects of our national life, how it was especially reshaping women’s lives on the ground, how government was responding (or not), the role of the private sector and other institutions, the plight of ordinary citizens. We probed our own areas of work and engagement. We invited friends and colleagues where we needed help. We saw it to be our responsibility to continue to surface and strengthen women’s perspectives and agency in these difficult and extraordinary times. And, thus, this book was born, emerging from every woman talking to each other and claiming our space to speak up and be heard, intent to make a difference – especially since we saw no women at the frontlines of the national task force set up by the President to respond to the crisis.

Using an intersectional gender lens, this qualitative research paper explores seven key areas in which women have been adversely affected in comparison to men, namely: the shouldering of unpaid care responsibilities, overrepresentation in frontline responses, weakening of economic security, increased gender-based violence (GBV), diminished sexual and reproductive health, financial devastation of the women's sector and a growing digital divide. Due to pre-existing structural inequalities prior to the COVID-19 crisis, individuals who are racialized, immigrant, migrant or undocumented, disabled, low-income, or a part of the LGBTQ+ community have felt these burdens the most. By examining our current political economy, decisions made in past crises, and the economic benefits of gender equality, this paper discusses the unique window of opportunity the pandemic presents to correct past mistakes and commit to transformative social change. The paper argues that Canada's COVID-19 recovery plan must be thoughtful and inclusive, prioritizing gender justice and economic and social rights for everyone. The paper concludes by providing various short-term policy solutions to aid in the mitigation of the pandemic's gendered effects, as well as an initial framework of seven potential policy areas in which to focus and allocate resources in the long term.

In the case of Covid-19, women are more affected across every domain, from social protection to health, simply because if their gender. This research explores the impact of Covid-19 on women, both economically and socially, with the focus on the case of Egypt. It explores the systematic gender inequalities in the economic, social, and health spheres using cases from previous crises, and how this gender inequality and vulnerability has resulted in much worse consequences of Covid-19 than that of men. The primary research focuses on women in upper/middle classes, and aimed to answer, as we emerge from this pandemic, how can we prevent it from excavating the existing gender inequalities? The primary research displayed that the pandemic's impact was felt deeply and added a strain women, however it is also important to point out that it also portrayed some positive changes especially in household dynamics. Concluding that the imbedded gender stereotypes that add pressures on women are not related to social or economic class, they are deep rooted in society and will only change, if the younger generation change those ideals and recognize the role of women as an active agent in the development process of the society. The research also examined the Egyptian Covid-19 response plan in comparison to other countries and overall, the Egyptian response plan reflected a new gender-sensitive strategy that is very apparent in almost all the policies. Egypt addressed issues like unpaid care work, and increasing in cash benefits to female-headed households, and micro financing to women entrepreneurs, which was not the case for many countries

While these initial efforts had been only partially successful by the 1960s, they laid the foundation for the radical change in Canadian human rights achieved by Pierre Elliott Trudeau in the 1980s. In Toward the Charter Christopher MacLennan explores the origins of this dramatic revolution in Canadian human rights, from its beginnings in the Great Depression to the critical developments of the 1960s. Drawing heavily on the experiences of a diverse range of human rights advocates, the author provides a detailed account of the various efforts to resist the abuse of civil liberties at the hands of the federal government and provincial legislatures and the resulting campaign for a national bill of rights. The important roles played by parliamentarians such as John Diefenbaker and academics such as F.R.
