This book was released on 2020 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The study of the reciprocal relationship between the Bible and popular culture has blossomed in the past few decades, and the time seems ripe for a broadly-conceived work that assesses the current state of the field, offers examples of work in that field, and suggests directions for further study. This Handbook includes a wide range of topics organized under several broad themes, including biblical characters and themes in popular culture; the Bible in popular cultural genres; "lived" examples; and a concluding section in which we take stock of methodologies like Reception History and the impact of the field on teaching and publishing. These topics are all addressed by focusing on specific examples from film, television, comics, music, literature, video games, science fiction, material culture, museums, and theme parks, to name a few. This book represents a major contribution to the field by some of its leading practitioners, and will be a key resource for the future development of the study of Bible and American popular culture"--

Book The Meaning and Interpretation of Desire in the Bible

Download or read book The Meaning and Interpretation of Desire in the Bible written by Samo Skralovnik and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term desire in the Hebrew Bible covers a wide range of human longings, emotions, and cravings. The direct and explicit term of desire is nevertheless limited to only two roots found in the Decalogue—the verb forms of the lexical roots חמד and אוה, which reflect not only the dynamics of desire occurring in human beings, but also in God. With an comprehensive semantic analysis and an overview of the synonyms and antonyms, the author shows that the verb form of the lexical root אוה denotes a variety of needs related to human existence including aspiration for God while the verb form of the lexical root חמד denotes the desire to acquire material wealth and possessions beyond basic needs. All the findings are compared on two levels—in relation to human beings (objects and people) and in relation to God—and ultimately serve for the interpretation of the roots in both versions of the Decalogue (Exod 20:17 and Deut 5:21) to resolve questions concerning the meaning of the desire in Tenth Commandment and substantiate whether the answers to life’s questions provided by the Bible correspond to modern society.

Book The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes

Download or read book The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes written by Yiu Sing Lúcás Chan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes are often considered significant texts for the Christian moral life. However, most interpretations of these passages either focus on the original meaning of the text or how the texts should impact ordinary living today. In The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes Yiu Sing L c s Chan brings together biblical studies and Christian ethics to look at these foundational texts in a new way. For each passage Chan asks both what the texts meant and what they mean today. He helps readers to carefully study the text's original meaning, then interpret the text within a sound ethical framework. The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes is an excellent introduction to key concepts in biblical studies and Christian ethics that combines sound study with warmth and wisdom.
