Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As his beloved affair with the game of basketball, ingrained in him as a young boy growing up in the gritty Brownsville section of Brooklyn, grew into a life-long journey around the world, Herb Turetzky suddenly found himself returning to his roots, at the newly-opened Barclays Center, just ten subway stops on the IRT New Lots line from his boyhood home. With the Brooklyn Nets' new home in his home borough, a short five-minute walk from his alma mater, Long Island University, and a thirty minute drive from his Bayside, Queens home, his almost fifty year Nets' career was rejuvenated, enabling Herb to envision continuing his amazing career while, at the same time, finding his memory of so many greats of the game rekindled. This lifetime fascination, coupled with his long-standing relationships with close boyhood friends and even closer family members, including the recent birth of his first grandchild, have enabled Herb to put together this autobiographical collection of original poetry, a strongly suggested read for followers of basketball, Brooklyn, the historic Brownsville and those with a hearty admiration of family ties.

Book excerpt: “Wickedly funny and heartstoppingly vulnerable…every page twinkles with brilliance.” —Refinery29 Perfect for fans of Samantha Irby and Trick Mirror, a hilarious, whip-smart collection of personal essays exploring the intersection of queerness, pop culture, the internet, and identity, introducing one of the most undeniably original new voices today. Jill Gutowitz’s life—for better and worse—has always been on a collision course with pop culture. There’s the time the FBI showed up at her door because of something she tweeted about Game of Thrones. The pop songs that have been the soundtrack to the worst moments of her life. And of course, the pivotal day when Orange Is the New Black hit the airwaves and broke down the door to Jill’s own sexuality. In these honest examinations of identity, desire, and self-worth, Jill explores perhaps the most monumental cultural shift of our lifetimes: the mainstreaming of lesbian culture. Dusting off her own personal traumas and artifacts of her not-so-distant youth she examines how pop culture acts as a fun house mirror reflecting and refracting our values—always teaching, distracting, disappointing, and revealing us. Girls Can Kiss Now is a fresh and intoxicating blend of personal stories, sharp observations, and laugh-out-loud humor. This timely collection of essays helps us make sense of our collective pop-culture past even as it points the way toward a joyous, uproarious, near—and very queer—future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unvarnished look at the economic and political choices that reshaped contemporary Chicago—arguably for the worse. The 1990s were a glorious time for the Chicago Bulls, an age of historic championships and all-time basketball greats like Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan. It seemed only fitting that city, county, and state officials would assist the team owners in constructing a sparkling new venue to house this incredible team that was identified worldwide with Chicago. That arena, the United Center, is the focus of Bulls Markets, an unvarnished look at the economic and political choices that forever reshaped one of America’s largest cities—arguably for the worse. Sean Dinces shows how the construction of the United Center reveals the fundamental problems with neoliberal urban development. The pitch for building the arena was fueled by promises of private funding and equitable revitalization in a long-blighted neighborhood. However, the effort was funded in large part by municipal tax breaks that few ordinary Chicagoans knew about, and that wound up exacerbating the rising problems of gentrification and wealth stratification. In this portrait of the construction of the United Center and the urban life that developed around it, Dinces starkly depicts a pattern of inequity that has become emblematic of contemporary American cities: governments and sports franchises collude to provide amenities for the wealthy at the expense of poorer citizens, diminishing their experiences as fans and—far worse—creating an urban environment that is regulated and surveilled for the comfort and protection of that same moneyed elite.
