Download or read book The Acad mie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture written by Christian Michel and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture (French Academy of Painting and Sculpture)—perhaps the single most influential art institution in history—governed the arts in France for more than 150 years, from its founding in 1648 until its abolition in 1793. Christian Michel's sweeping study presents an authoritative, in-depth analysis of the Académie’s history and legacy. The Académie Royale assembled nearly all of the important French artists working at the time, maintained a virtual monopoly on teaching and exhibitions, enjoyed a priority in obtaining royal commissions, and deeply influenced the artistic landscape in France. Yet the institution remains little understood today: all commentary on it, during its existence and since its abolition, is based on prejudices, both favorable and critical, that have shaped the way the institution has been appraised. This book takes a different approach. Rather than judging the Académie Royale, Michel unravels existing critical discourse to consider the nuances and complexities of the academy’s history, reexamining its goals, the shifting power dynamics both within the institution and in the larger political landscape, and its relationship with other French academies and guilds.
Download or read book Fantasmic Objects written by Kirsten L. Scheid and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Lebanon, the study of modern art—rather than power or hierarchy—has compelled citizens to confront how they define themselves as a postcolonial nation. In Fantasmic Objects, Kirsten L. Scheid offers a striking study of both modern art in Lebanon and modern Lebanon through art. By focusing on the careers of Moustapha Farrouk and Omar Onsi, forefathers of an iconic national repertoire, and their rebellious student Saloua Raouda Choucair, founder of an antirepresentational, participatory art, Scheid traces an emerging sense of what it means to be Lebanese through the evolution of new exhibition, pedagogical, and art-writing practices. She reveals that art and artists helped found the nation during French occupation, as the formal qualities and international exhibitions of nudes and landscapes in the 1930s crystallized notions of modern masculinity, patriotic femininity, non-sectarian religiosity, and citizenship. Examining the efforts of painters, sculptors, and activists in Lebanon who fiercely upheld aesthetic development and battled for new forms of political being, Fantasmic Objects offers an insightful approach to the history and formation of modern Lebanon.

Book excerpt: ART & CREAKY BONES by Sheila Reid, with a French translation by Anne Marchou 4 Awards -- Winner & Finalist, International Book Awards 2020 (American Book Fest) Finalist, National Indie Excellence Awards & Finalist, Next Generation Indie Book Awards 2020 Why are some people vibrant and active as they age, while others become tired and depressed? The author whose own bones are a little creaky these days, came across a story about a 102 year old artist in the glory of her first success at the Whitney Museum in New York. This set Reid off reading neuroscience reports about how creativity helps people live longer and stay in better health. The author, who has spent her whole life making art twelve hours a day and exhibiting in museums around the world, was overjoyed to learn how and why her favorite activity is such a super remedy for aging well. She found that anything creative, dancing or singing, drawing or even beginning a new language, will keep you healthier and lengthen your life. You will probably also make new friends. After 50 is maybe the best time of your life for creating something new, because the wisdom and experience you've gained over the years make you much more innovative. As you age you're freer and you have only your own pleasure to think of. The brain changes with time and you tend to be braver too, and more likely to produce something that is completely unexpected. One reason is that you worry less about what the world thinks. You gain a certain peacefulness. This creates fertile ground for your imagination to flourish as you get older. The increase of self-esteem these activities bring is nourishing to the soul and to the body. Isn't it wonderful to find some good news in the world today.? The people who awarded it 4 Book Awards, think you'll love Art & Creaky Bones.
