Book Beyond Market Value

Download or read book Beyond Market Value written by Annette Campbell-White and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Market Value chronicles Annette Campbell-White’s remarkable life, from a childhood spent in remote mining camps throughout the British Commonwealth, where books created an imaginary home; to her early adulthood in London, where she first discovered a vocation as a book collector; to Silicon Valley, where she built a pioneering career as a formidable venture capitalist. She recalls the impulsive purchase of the first book in her collection, T. S. Eliot’s A Song for Simeon, and her pursuit of rare editions of all one hundred titles listed in Cyril Connolly’s The Modern Movement. Campbell-White’s collecting and career peaked in 2005, when she acquired the last of the Connolly titles and was first named to Forbes’ Midas List, the annual ranking of the most successful dealmakers in venture capital. In 2007, out of concern for their preservation, Campbell-White rashly sold the Connolly titles she had spent more than twenty years assembling, leading to a new appreciation of what remained of her collection and, going forward, a broader focus on collecting modernist letters, manuscripts, and ephemera. Beyond Market Value is both a loving tribute to literary collecting and a telling account of the challenges of being a woman in the male-dominated world of finance.

Book Merleau Ponty s Existential Phenomenology and the Realization of Philosophy

Download or read book Merleau Ponty s Existential Phenomenology and the Realization of Philosophy written by Bryan A. Smyth and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing to light the essential philosophical role of Marxism within Merleau-Ponty's reinterpretation of transcendental phenomenology, this book shows that the realization of this project hinges methodologically upon a renewed conception of the proletariat qua universal class-specifically, that it rests upon a humanist myth of incarnation which, substantiated by Merleau-Ponty's notion of 'heroism', locates an objective historical purposiveness in the habituated organism of the modern subject. Foregrounding the phenomenological priority of history over corporeality in this way, Smyth's analysis recovers the 'militant' character of Merleau-Ponty's existential phenomenology. It thus sheds critical new light on his early thought, and challenges some of the main parameters of existing scholarship by disclosing the intrinsic normativity of his basic methodological commitments.

Book From Juby to Arras

Download or read book From Juby to Arras written by Barnett DeRamus and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the concept of engagement (commitment) in the life and works of the French author/pilot Antoine de Saint-ExupÈry. This is a literary study concentrating on four major works: Courrier Sud, Vol de nuit, Terre des hommes, and Pilote de guerre. The study opens with a discussion of the influence of World War I on post-war literature, defines engagement, and compares concepts among Saint-ExupÈry, Sartre, Camus, Malraux, and Hemingway. Following is an examination of the role of the airplane and flight in the literature of the 1920s and 1930s and an analysis of Saint-ExupÈry's personal experiences as reflected in Courrier Sud and in Vol de nuit. There is a further examination of how the author's life is mirrored in Terre des hommes and Pilote de guerre. There is a final investigation of certain challenges and inspirations that demonstrate Saint-ExupÈry's view of engagement in relation to the four major topics of his works: nature, the desert, flight, and the enemy.

Book Years of Plenty Years of Want

    Book Details:
  • Author : Benjamin Franklin Martin
  • Publisher : Northern Illinois University Press
  • Release : 2013-03-15

Download or read book Years of Plenty Years of Want written by Benjamin Franklin Martin and published by Northern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great War that engulfed Europe between 1914 and 1918 was a catastrophe for France. French soil was the site of most of the fighting on the Western Front. French dead were more than 1.3 million, the permanently disabled another 1.1 million, overwhelmingly men in their twenties and thirties. The decade and a half before the war had been years of plenty, a time of increasing prosperity and confidence remembered as the Belle Epoque or the good old days. The two decades that followed its end were years of want, loss, misery, and fear. In 1914, France went to war convinced of victory. In 1939, France went to war dreading defeat. To explain the burden of winning the Great War and embracing the collapse that followed, Benjamin Martin examines the national mood and daily life of France in July 1914 and August 1939, the months that preceded the two world wars. He presents two titans: Georges Clemenceau, defiant and steadfast, who rallied a dejected nation in 1918, and Edouard Daladier, hesitant and irresolute, who espoused appeasement in 1938 though comprehending its implications. He explores novels by a constellation of celebrated French writers who treated the Great War and its social impact, from Colette to Irène Némirovsky, from François Mauriac to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. And he devotes special attention to Roger Martin du Gard, the1937 Nobel Laureate, whose roman-fleuve The Thibaults is an unrivaled depiction of social unraveling and disillusionment. For many in France, the legacy of the Great War was the vow to avoid any future war no matter what the cost. They cowered behind the Maginot Line, the fortifications along the eastern border designed to halt any future German invasion. Others knew that cost would be too great and defended the "Descartes Line": liberty and truth, the declared values of French civilization. In his distinctive and vividly compelling prose, Martin recounts this struggle for the soul of France.

Book Writing the Heavenly Frontier

Download or read book Writing the Heavenly Frontier written by Denice Turner and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing the Heavenly Frontier celebrates the early voices of the air as it examines the sky as a metaphorical and political landscape. While flight histories usually focus on the physical dangers of early aviation, this book introduces the figurative liabilities of ascension. Early pilot-writers not only grappled with an unwieldy machine; they also grappled with poetics that were extremely selective. Tropes that cast Charles Lindbergh as the transcendent hero of the new millennium were the same ones that kept women, black Americans, and indigenous peoples imaginatively tethered to the ground. The most popular flight autobiographies in the United States posited a hero who rose from the mundane to the miraculous; and yet the most startling autobiographies point out the social factors that limited or forbade vertical movement—both literally and figuratively. A survey of pilot writing, the book will appeal to flight enthusiasts and people interested in American autobiography and culture. But it will also appeal strongly to readers interested in the poetics and politics of place.

Book Locating the Transatlantic in Twentieth century Politics Diplomacy and Culture

Download or read book Locating the Transatlantic in Twentieth century Politics Diplomacy and Culture written by Gaynor Johnson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in tribute to the work of Professor Alan Dobson, this collection of essays brings diplomacy and the Anglo-American relationship together, considering politics and foreign policy in tandem with cultural interactions. Uniquely placed to define exactly what transatlanticism is, and to explore the ways in which this idea has evolved in the last 150 years, this book asks to what extent can it be argued that there was a transatlantic world, how can it be defined and what was unique about it? With contributions from leading scholars it offers an overview of the field as well as a comparative exploration of Anglo-American relations. From emotion in foreign policy decision making, to the RAF in the Vietnam War, as well as leader personalities and transatlantic reactions to women's rights in China, Transatlanticism and Transnationalism since the First World War explores this 'special relationship' at many levels and from many angles. It further asks how this relationship has evolved over the years, and considers how it might survive in a globalized, post-industrial world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beginning with a single entry for the year 1889, when he was twenty, and continuing intermittently but indefatigably through his life, theJournals of Andr Gideconstitute an enlightening, moving, and endlessly fascinating chronicle of creative energy and conviction. Astutely and thoroughly annotated by Justin O'Brien in consultation with Gide himself, this translation is the definitive edition of Gide's complete journals. The complete journals, representing sixty years of a varied life, testify to a disciplined intelligence in a constantly maturing thought. These pages contain aesthetic appreciations, philosophic reflections, sustained literary criticism, notes for the composition of his works, details of his personal life and spiritual conflicts, accounts of his extensive travels, and comments on the political and social events of the day, from the Dreyfus case to the German occupation. Gide records his progress as a writer and a reader as well as his contacts and conversations with the bright lights of contemporary Europe, from Paul Valry, Paul Claudel, Lon Blum, and Auguste Rodin to Marcel Proust, Stephen Mallarm, Oscar Wilde, and Nadia Boulanger. Devoid of affectation, alternately overtaken by depression and animated by a sense of urgency and hunger for literature and beauty, Gide read voraciously, corresponded voluminously, and thought profoundly, always questioning and doubting in search of the unadulterated truth. ""The only drama that really interests me and that I should always be willing to depict anew,"" he wrote, ""is the debate of the individual with whatever keeps him from being authentic, with whatever is opposed to his integrity, to his integration. Most often the obstacle is within him. And all the rest is merely accidental."""

Book The Proof By Nine

Download or read book The Proof By Nine written by Denise Bonhomme and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-05-04 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have read and loved The Little Prince and if you like riddles, this book will probably interest you. What is the meaning of the “magnificent image” at the beginning of the first chapter? Most readers do not find it magnificent at all. Yet, those who know that “the essential is invisible to the eyes” see it as an invitation to think and to learn. The “hat” featured on the same page which actually is something else conveys another hint to look beyond appearance. As you read The Proof by Nine, you will see what is represented by the Virgin Forest mentioned on the first page of The Little Prince. You will grasp the meanings of the pilot, the little prince, the golden muffler of the title character and of the wonderful “fox.” You will see what the “children” really are. The war waged by “sheep” against the “rose” will make profound sense. You will recognize the universal symbols of the tree, the rope, the wheel and the well of science. You will be edified by the experience of the Turkish astronomer. You will observe how all that is relevant to current events and politics for, as stated by the author of The Proof by Nine, “all those things are connected.” You might even ask yourself an exciting question: “Did Saint-Exupéry see the future?” That is why The Little Prince is, in the final words of its author “so very important.”
