Book The Magic of Surrender

Download or read book The Magic of Surrender written by Kute Blackson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the boldest voices in the world of personal growth and motivation, a guide to moving past inner struggle to discover the power of relinquishing control. Too often we limit our lives by putting conditions on them. We think things should go a certain way, and when they don't, we hold on to what isn't working, reinforcing what is causing us pain and affirming our lack of trust in the universe. There is another way: We can harness the power of relinquishing control and discover more purpose and meaning in our lives. After the passing of Kute Blackson's mother in 2017, he discovered that the powerful lesson his mother had been modeling her whole life had always been at the heart of his own teachings--he just hadn't realized it. What was that keen insight? Surrender isn't passive. It isn't giving up. It's strong and courageous. It's about tapping in. In this inspiring book, Blackson traces how surrender was a key factor in the lives of so many great people throughout history, and shows readers how they can move past self-imposed barriers in their lives to discover the freedom and possibility on the other side of surrender.

Book excerpt: As a free-spirited, independent woman, Bronnie Ware was used to donning a variety of hats: singer, songwriter, author, speaker, traveler, and adventurer. And as her soul would have it in her mid-forties, she felt the urge to add one more, mother. Ware, author of The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, had learned many lessons as a palliative-care giver, and she began to absorb even more from the opposite end of the spectrum as a giver of life. Only a few moments into motherhood, however, Ware’s body had a different idea, when chronic crippling pain from an auto-immune disease took hold. In this inspiring memoir, Ware reminds us that whether life’s lessons arrive through illness, trauma, or any other unexpected upheaval, life really does love us. By finding the courage to confront her upper limits, surrender to life’s blessings, and have gratitude every step of the way, Ware discovered how to bloom in a field of formidable challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Courage to Surrender is an engaging story of hope that will captivate anyone interested in finding a compassionate community of Jesuss disciples. It is a story of how nine American teenagers from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, came to discover how to be the church; not the church of twentieth century in America, but a hopeful future-resurrected church for the twenty-first century. It is a church fellowship where people love one another with the extravagant love and grace of God, one in which a love for those in need flows out of their relationships with one another. It is a story of transformation, not only of individuals, but of a diverse fellowship of believers. In it you will find pain and healing, questions and answers, struggles, masks removed, radically change lives, some humor, and a lot of hope. It is written for young adults seeking meaning and purpose in life and for mature Christians frustrated with the fragmentation of the church and its preoccupation with rules, programs, buildings, and control. Nearly every chapter has its surprises. On first reading, it is simply a fascinating tale but on another level, it addresses the disparities in the world and the search for significance within us all. Readers will be encouraged and challenged.

Book The Courage to Surrender

Book excerpt: My college sweetheart was five months pregnant when we got married at a formal wedding her family planned for us. Times were crazy as I'd graduated from college two weeks earlier and was getting ready to move to a strange city to begin a career. My concerns were where would we live; could I do the job I never tried, and would my salary be enough to pay the bills; give my new wife and I a life, and most of all provide the required baby things. I excelled at my career, but money was tight, so we read and fed the ducks in a quiet lifestyle with our "love child." Our only exception that summer of 1969 was the infamous Woodstock Music and Art Festival. I was concerned my best friend's wife was pregnant, but we picked them up in New York State as we passed through from our new apartment in Connecticut. Within four years my wife was pregnant again, and my job was boring, so I got a new job about four hours to the west. It was a living accommodations upgrade; the job was challenging, and we met a nice couple with two kids the ages of ours. Over then few years we socialized and played sports with them. We became tight with them until the next better job came along. We moved six hours farther west. And that was our lifestyle for the next 7 or 8 years until we could afford a house, but the change was negligible. The only significance aside from yard work was I met a couple of high-powered addicts with high-level jobs. With their assistance, I added speed to my habits. Fortunately, my LSD experiment was not impressive. As my addiction to my increased use, my wife joined us to a lesser degree. Less than a year in our house, I was transferred to headquarters with recommendations. I was placed on the "high potential" list indicating the sky was the limit if I worked hard and stayed out of trouble. Those two requirements proved too much for my lifestyle. This was a Fortune 5 company so it surprised me as the year before the move I was asked to join an elite group headed to upper management, but it was all accounting, which wasn't on my career path, so I quite early on. The day I handed in my book my boss went ballistic screaming - no one quits - it took me a lot to get you in. After breaking down walls of digital ignorance the company gave me a management award, which I suggested we split with one of my direct reports. She was deserving, but once again that's not done. After that embarrassment, I was told in private if projects are a success it's because the project manager made it happen. For failed projects, it's always the people actually doing the work who screwed it up. At the corporate office, I fell in with a couple of partiers who brought me down to their lifestyle. I was not feeling good about myself - I was at the bottom of my life and with every opportunity to excel I failed. In 1982, I was given a project that included a communications link to Singapore. I visited there for a five-week stay and loved the challenge of the work. Upon my return, there was a domestic situation that started at the airport. I didn't handle it very well after my 27-hour plane trip. Part of the issues was a transfer to New Hampshire. As everyone expected I was able to straighten out my life in the quiet environment of New Hampshire. - no drugs, reduced drinking.

Download or read book The Courage to Be written by Paul Tillich and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-26 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Courage to Be introduced issues of theology and culture to a general readership. The book examines ontic, moral, and spiritual anxieties across history and in modernity. The author defines courage as the self-affirmation of one's being in spite of a threat of nonbeing. He relates courage to anxiety, anxiety being the threat of non-being and the courage to be what we use to combat that threat. Tillich outlines three types of anxiety and thus three ways to display the courage to be. Tillich writes that the ultimate source of the courage to be is the "God above God," which transcends the theistic idea of God and is the content of absolute faith (defined as "the accepting of the acceptance without somebody or something that accepts").

Book The Courage to Surrender

Download or read book The Courage to Surrender written by John W. and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike the memoir of a famous person, my story lives with the millions of baby boomers who passed me a joint and a beer in college and again at the corporate picnic. Before the Woodstock weekend in 1969, I graduated from college and married the mother of our love child, began training for a computer programming career, and a few months later got a high number in the draft lottery. My use of recreational drugs escalated from fun getting high to a craving that trumped my love for drinking beer. I secured a project manager job at the corporate offices of a world-wide company which is where I entered a fast lane that became a free fall to the bottom of my life. My days began by smoking dope to medicate my alcohol ravaged insides, so I could tolerate the gridlock of morning rush hour traffic. Business days included getting high at noon while on the way to seedy strip joints for a lunch of drinking. The true measure of my self-destruction lay hidden on the dark side of my life where substances and out of control people influenced me into doing things I knew were wrong. On Dec 17, 2001 my doctor showed me the results of my physical to explain that if I continued to drink I would die sooner rather than later. His prognosis scared me, so I poured out my alcohol and used an old AA schedule to attend the first of some 1800 meetings. My story is full of experiences from my days at the bottom of life, through the first years in recovery, to a day in sobriety. My book combines short stories of life with vivid descriptions of actual situations that allow the reader to see this life-threatening disease from all angles. There are messages for the friends and family of an addict, so they can see that secrecy and enabling are part of the madness. When you have finished my memoir some of the mystery that surrounds alcoholism and drug addiction will be answered: why people hit deep bottoms, fear based decisions, motive driven behavior, and how the disease twists the mind of the alcoholic / drug addict. Although my past is a mixture of shame and guilt, I'll tell you who I was, what I did, and the lessons I had to learn more than once. Since Dec. 17, 2001 I have not found a problem or instance that I thought drinking and using would improve. I do not preach the virtues of sobriety I merely open my story for the reader to take what they need.

Book Seduction Surrender and Transformation

Download or read book Seduction Surrender and Transformation written by Karen J. Maroda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seduction, Surrender, and Transformation demonstrates how interpersonal psychoanalysis obliges analysts to engage their patients with genuine emotional responsiveness, so that not only the patient but the analyst too is open to ongoing transformation through the analytic experience. In so doing, the analyst moves from the position of an "interpreting observer" to that of an "active participant and facilitator" whose affective communications enable the patient to acquire basic self-trust along with self-knowledge. Drawing on the current literature on affect, Maroda argues that psychological change occurs through affect-laden interpersonal processes. Given that most patients in psychotherapy have problems with affect management, the completing of cycles of affective communication between therapist and patient becomes a vitally important aspect of the therapeutic enterprise. Through emotionally open responses to their patients and careful use of patient-prompted self-disclosures, analysts can facilitate affect regulation responsibly and constructively, with the emphasis always remaining on the patients' experience. Moments of mutual surrender - the honest emotional giving over of patient to analyst and analyst to patient - epitomize the emotionally intense interpersonal experiences that lead to enduring intrapsychic change. Maroda's work is profoundly personal. She does not hesitate to share with the reader how her own personality affects her thinking and her work. Indeed, she believes her theoretical and clinical preferences are emblematic of the way in which the analyst's subjectivity necessarily shapes theory choice and practice preferences in general. Seduction, Surrender, and Transfomation is not only a powerful brief for emotional honesty in the analytic relationship but also a model of the personal openness that, according to Maroda, psychoanalysis demands of all its practitioners.

Book No Surrender

Download or read book No Surrender written by Christopher Edmonds and published by HarperOne. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of #1 New York Times bestsellers like Unbroken, Boys on the Boat, and Band of Brothers, No Surrender is an unforgettable story of a father's extraordinary acts of valor in World War II and a son's thrilling journey to discover them?an epic narrative of bravery, compassion, and faith. Like most members of the Greatest Generation, Roddie Edmonds, a humble American soldier from East Tennessee, rarely spoke about his experiences during World War II. Not even his son Chris knew the full details of Roddie's capture at the Battle of the Bulge or his captivity at Stalag IXA, a Nazi POW camp. But when Chris's daughter was assigned a family history project, Chris reread Roddie's wartime diaries, which set in motion a series of life-changing events. Called to learn his father's story with a renewed sense of passion and purpose, Chris embarked on a years-long journey, interviewing surviving POWs under Roddie's command, and retracing his father's footsteps, from Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where a boyish Roddie transformed into a seasoned leader of men, to the patch of grass near Ziegenhain, Germany, where he stared evil in the eye and dared a Nazi to shoot. Along with New York Times bestselling author Douglas Century, Chris Edmonds takes us to the front lines of this inspiring multigenerational story, revealing in gripping, novelistic detail Roddie's previously untold heroism--and the lasting effects his bravery had on the lives of thousands, then and now. "What's most remarkable about my journey to discover what my father did in the Second World War," Chris writes, was "the realization that any one of us has the untapped potential to do something incredibly courageous. . . . We all have the potential to change the world simply by standing up for what's right." A shining example of the transformative and redemptive power of moral courage, No Surrender is a celebration of faith, family, and service--the very characteristics that define us today. --James Bradley, New York Times bestselling author of Flags of Our Fathers
