Book excerpt: The role of computer modeling has grown recently to integrate itself as an inseparable tool to experimental studies for the optimization of automotive engines and the development of future fuels. Traditionally, computer models rely on simplified global reaction steps to simulate the combustion and pollutant formation inside the internal combustion engine. With the current interest in advanced combustion modes and injection strategies, this approach depends on arbitrary adjustment of model parameters that could reduce credibility of the predictions. The purpose of this study is to enhance the combustion model of KIVA, a computational fluid dynamics code, by coupling its fluid mechanics solution with detailed kinetic reactions solved by the chemistry solver, CHEMKIN. As a result, an engine-friendly reaction mechanism for n-heptane was selected to simulate diesel oxidation. Each cell in the computational domain is considered as a perfectly-stirred reactor which undergoes adiabatic constant- volume combustion. The model was applied to an ideally-prepared homogeneous- charge compression-ignition combustion (HCCI) and direct injection (DI) diesel combustion. Ignition and combustion results show that the code successfully simulates the premixed HCCI scenario when compared to traditional combustion models. Direct injection cases, on the other hand, do not offer a reliable prediction mainly due to the lack of turbulent-mixing model, inherent in the perfectly-stirred reactor formulation. In addition, the model is sensitive to intake conditions and experimental uncertainties which require implementation of enhanced predictive tools. It is recommended that future improvements consider turbulent-mixing effects as well as optimization techniques to accurately simulate actual in-cylinder process with reduced computational cost. Furthermore, the model requires the extension of existing fuel oxidation mechanisms to include pollutant formation kinetics for emission control studies.

Book excerpt: Use of detailed chemistry augments the combustion model of a three-dimensional unsteady compressible turbulent Navier,ÄìStokes solver with liquid spray injection when coupled with fluid mechanics solution with detailed kinetic reactions. Reduced chemical reaction mechanisms help in the reducing the simulations time to study of the engine performance parameters, such as, in-cylinder pressure in spark ignition engines. Sensitivity analysis must be performed to reduce the reaction mechanism for the compression and power strokes utilizing computational singular perturbation (CSP) method. To study a suitable well-established surrogate fuel, an interface between fluid dynamics and chemical kinetics codes must be used. A mesh independent study must be followed to validate results obtained from numerical simulations against the experimental data. To obtain comprehensive results, a detailed study should be performed for all ranges of equivalence ratios as well as stoichiometric condition. This gives rise to the development of a reduced mechanism that has the capability to validate engine performance parameters from stoichiometric to rich mixtures in a spark ignition engine. The above-mentioned detailed methodology was developed and implemented in the present study for premixed and direct injection spark ignition engines which resulted in a single reduced reaction mechanism that validated the engine performance parameters for both engine configurations.

Fundamentally, however, there are only molecules and particles for any material that interact on the microscopic and macroscopic scales. Therefore, to unify the analysis of physical systems and to reach a deeper understanding of the behavior of nature in scientific investigations, and of the behavior of designs in engineering endeavors, a new level of analysis is necessary. This new level of mathematical modeling and numerical solution does not merely involve the analysis of a single medium but must encompass the solution of multi-physics problems involving fluids, solids, and their interactions, involving multi-scale phenomena from the molecular to the macroscopic scales, and must include uncertainties in the given data and the solution results. Nature does not distinguish between fluids and solids and does not ever repeat itself exactly.This new level of analysis must also include, in engineering, the effective optimization of systems, and the modeling and analysis of complete life spans of engineering products, from design to fabrication, to possibly multiple repairs, to end of service.

Book excerpt: Phenomenology of Diesel Combustion and Modeling Diesel is the most efficient combustion engine today and it plays an important role in transport of goods and passengers on land and on high seas. The emissions must be controlled as stipulated by the society without sacrificing the legendary fuel economy of the diesel engines. These important drivers caused innovations in diesel engineering like re-entrant combustion chambers in the piston, lower swirl support and high pressure injection, in turn reducing the ignition delay and hence the nitric oxides. The limits on emissions are being continually reduced. The- fore, the required accuracy of the models to predict the emissions and efficiency of the engines is high. The phenomenological combustion models based on physical and chemical description of the processes in the engine are practical to describe diesel engine combustion and to carry out parametric studies. This is because the injection process, which can be relatively well predicted, has the dominant effect on mixture formation and subsequent course of combustion. The need for improving these models by incorporating new developments in engine designs is explained in Chapter 2. With “model based control programs” used in the Electronic Control Units of the engines, phenomenological models are assuming more importance now because the detailed CFD based models are too slow to be handled by the Electronic Control Units. Experimental work is necessary to develop the basic understanding of the pr- esses.

Book excerpt: The virtual development of future Spark Ignition (SI) engine combustion processes in three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (3D-CFD) demands for the integration of detailed chemistry, enabling - additionally to the 3D-CFD modelling of flow and mixture formation - the prediction of fuel-dependent SI engine combustion in all of its complexity. This work presents an approach, which constitutes a coupled solution for flame propagation, auto-ignition, and emission formation modelling incorporating detailed chemistry, while exhibiting low computational costs. For modelling the regular flame propagation, a laminar flamelet approach, the G-equation is used. Auto-ignition phenomena are addressed using an integrated flamelet approach, which bases on the tabulation of fuel-dependent reaction kinetics. By introducing a progress variable for the auto-ignition - the Ignition Progress Variable (IPV) - detailed chemistry is integrated in 3D-CFD. The modelling of emission formation bases on an interactively coupled flamelet approach, the Transient Interactive Flamelet (TIF) model. The functionality of the combined approach to model the variety of SI engine combustion phenomena is proved first in terms of fundamentals and standalone sub-model functionality studies by introducing a simplified test case, which represents an adiabatic pressure vessel without moving meshes. Following the basic functionality studies, the sub-model functionalities are investigated and validated in adequate engine test cases. It is shown, that the approach allows to detect locally occurring auto-ignition phenomena in the combustion chamber, and to model their interaction with regular flame propagation. Moreover, the approach enables the prediction of emission formation on cell level.
