Book excerpt: HISTORIC WASHINGTON COUNTY: A Photographic Portrait explores the storied past of Washington County through photographs of what life was like from the 1840s until the early 1950s. Although early settlers migrated to the north country before the Revolutionary War, farming and industry did not thrive until the early 1800s, as rivers like the Batten Kill and Mettawee powered the mills and the Champlain canal carried the products of the county's agriculture and industry. The people who came to Washington County were diverse in numerous ways: lifestyles, ethnicity, religion and skills. Men often worked in the fields planting crops in the spring and harvesting their bounty in the fall. Women worked in the factories all year round; they were seamstresses making shirts, garments and gloves. Most who lived in the small communities which grew up along the waterways were either dairy, sheep, or potato farmers. Others worked in mills producing paper, lumber, tools and equipment. In the early 1800s, Washington County boasted a population of over 45,000, the third largest in New York State at that time. In 1861, when young men were conscripted into the Union army, the county was one of the most prosperous in the entire country. The decades following the Civil War and through much of the 20th century were a time of invention, achievement and prosperity for many, when people were able to create a better way of life for themselves and their children. This book depicts how our ancestors dressed, what they did, and how they lived. It is a tale of the people and by the people, told through photos from private collections and archives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portrait and Biographical Album of Washington County, Iowa: Containing Full Page Portraits and Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens of the County, Together With Portraits and Biographies of All the Governors of Iowa, and of the Presidents of the United States As one of the most interesting features of this work, we present the portraits. Of numerous represent ative citizens. It has been our aim to have the prominent men of to-day, as well as the pioneers, represented in this department; and we congratulate ourselves on the uniformly high character of the gentlemen whose portraits we present. They are in the strictest sense representative men, and are selected from all the call iiigs and professions worthy to be given.' There are others, it is true, who claim equal prominence with those given; but of course it was impossible for us to give portraits of all the leading men and pioneers of the county. We are under great obligation to many of the noble and generous people of this county for kindly and material assistance in the preparation of this album. Book Historic Photos of Washington State

Download or read book Historic Photos of Washington State written by Dale Edward Soden and published by Turner. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington State has a rich history. Known for its stunning natural beauty and diversity, Washington was populated for centuries by a large number of Native American tribes. Explored by British sea captains in the late eighteenth century, the region was opened in the early nineteenth century with the aid of explorers Lewis and Clark. With the coming of the railroads, cities such as Seattle, Tacoma, and Spokane grew rapidly, while other communities sprouted up around the state. From coal mining in King County and logging in the deep forests, to farming in the Palouse and fishing on the Columbia, everyday men and women attempted to carve a living. Historic Photos of Washington State provides a compelling visual record of this past. Selected from several archival collections, these photographs include a number of images from two of Washington's best-known photographers, brothers Edward and Asahel Curtis. Published in striking black-and-white, these images reveal the history of what has become one of the most intriguing states in the nation.
