  • Author : Stefan Grossman
  • Publisher : Oak Publications
  • Release : 1972-06-01
  • ISBN : 1783234482

Download or read book The Book Of Guitar Tunings written by Stefan Grossman and published by Oak Publications. This book was released on 1972-06-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunings that differ from the standard EADGBE pattern have along and honorable history. From the pioneer blues-men to Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Bert Jansch, creative guitarists using unconventional tunings have been able to create unusual sounds, difficult or impossible in standard tuning. Until recently it was assumed that standard tuning was best for the beginner. But as Stefan Grossman points out, there are many other tunings which have special advantages: for example, there are open tunings, in which the strings are tuned to produce a complete chord, making the work of the left hand significantly easier. There are many that can immediately help the beginner feel more at home with the instrument. Whether you are an all-thumbs beginner, or an advanced guitarist looking for new scope, in The Book of Tunings Stefan Grossman shows you how to make the guitar’s adaptability work for you. The tunings are presented with right-hand fingerpicking techniques, and the songs are a wide assortment of blues, ballads, bottleneck dance tunes, and medieval instrumentals. The book includes a discography and bibliography, and a special theory section by Larry Sandberg.

Book Open Your Door

Download or read book Open Your Door written by Daniel Rico Vidales and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the blues developed across the Southern United States different regional cultures emerged, connected by a set of musical influences but distinguished by the figures that represented them. The Texas country blues tradition remains one of the oldest and most influential styles within the blues genre. The creative scope and achievements of its notable musicians puts Texas country blues, or folk blue, on par with parallel blues cultures from the Delta mississippi, New Orleans, Chicago, and Piedmont regions. Texascountry blues musicians advanced approaches to songwriting and performance practice that greatly influenced the blues genre. Most of these artists were guitarists and songsters, figures who established and sustained a distinct regional style charecterized by lyricalmastery, charismatic vocal deliveries, and adept guitar playing. However, an often-neglected aspect of this tradition's musical language is the ubiquitous use of alternate guitar tunings, an idiomatic technique rooted in African music and connected to several other traditions of plucked string instruments. Musicians and scholars alike have alluded to the creative potential of alternate tunings, but substantive research on the subject remains absent. This paper will explore the use of alternate tunings in the guitar playing of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie Johnson, and Sam "Lightnin" Hopkins through the use of gestural analysis, informed by narrative interpretations. The goal of this survey, which examines how all three guitarists benefitted creatively from returning their guitars, is to support the idea that alternate tunings in Texas folk blues music served a creative function.
